I work at the Boys and Girls Club and my group of First - Sixth graders have earned a movie day. My oldest is only 4 and we haven't see many movies at all.
I'd prefer the movie to be as current to DVD as possible and rated G or PG. I'll have to get it at a movie rental store or Redbox and require a parental permission form.
What would you suggest for a group like this? (Mostly 1-4th graders with a couple of 5th and 6th graders).
I love "Up", is colorful enough for the little ones, with some fun moments for the older ones and some reflective romantic moments for grown ups.

Most kids love The Sandlot. It's not really current, but it is on DVD and is easy to find. I teach high school, and my students still talk about that movie. :)
Just to be contrary... Why not try a really old movie? Honestly, I'm sure they've all (or nearly all) seen anything new so why not try going for something different and fun? Maybe a musical like Singin' in the Rain or On the Town, or so many other choices? There are so many great old comedies too. I could (and still can) entertain my kids for hours with an old movie. The best part--- you don't have to worry about content!
I vote for UP. It was fabulous. Both our kids really enjoyed it too. They also really liked Hoodwinked (and so did hubby and I). If you have never seen Hoodwinked, you should check it out. LOVED "Granny"... lol
As for the mention below for Goonies... be aware there is a lot of mild swearing in it. Would be fine for the 6th graders, but if you have 6 & 7 year olds, you will have some irate parents if you show that one. I had forgotten about the swearing when I let my son watch it a few years ago (he was about 9 or 10) and was surprised by it. I didn't remember it from when I watched it as a teen.
"Up" was great. My husband and I really liked it too!
"Rio" was a fun movie.
"Wal-E" was good too.

why not pick a couple of movies and let the kids vote on the titles. my son i know would not like to watch a musical and he is in 4th grade. so maybe the goonies (old), smurfs (new).

Charlie and the Chocolate Factory or other movies that are created from books for that age group.
I can't read any of the other answers right now (website glitch maybe) but you can't go wrong with any Disney movie. Rio is a cute movie or maybe even Smurfs or something like that.
Ramona and Beezus was GREAT! No bad content, but not a cartoon, so great for all ages. my 4 yr. old and i both loved it.

You have received a lot of good choices thus far. A couple of other ideas are the Madagascar movies and How to Train Your Dragon.
These aren't so new, but I would think that you could find them at a rental store or the library... The Iron Giant, or one of the Spy Kids movies. Then going a bit older there is Big (with Tom Hanks), The Karate Kid, ET, Who Framed Roger Rabbit. Even older, but still great, you have Disney classics such as Old Yeller, Swiss Family Robinson, Treasure Island or Parent Trap to name a few.
Rio. I just showed it to seniors and they loved it. They also love 'older' Disney movies: Aladdin and Hercules are favorites.

Might be hard to find at the video store, maybe the library, but if you can get any of the IMAX movies such as "Sharks", "Thrill Ride: The Science of Fun," (all about roller coasters) and my kids' all time favorite "Ski to the Max." They are visually spectacular, full of adventure, and often educational.
You can see clips of these films on youtube if you want to get an idea of what they're about. You don't need IMAX technology for the effect to be exciting...a big screen will do the trick.
Also Discovery Channel, History Channel, and National Geographic documentaries are also safe and fun to watch. You can find the most recent releases of these at most video stores.
