My Son Ate My Wedding Band...

I took of my rings near the computer to put lotion on (I never leave them down like that...ugh!) My son got them and stuck them in his mouth. I guess, because they are shiny. He's never been one to stick things in his mouth. Anyway, is that dangerous? It's just the band. I wear a size 4.5, so it's small. He was never choking, and is happily playing. No labored breathing, wheezing, etc. I'm just wondering what it could do to his tummy? I guess I just wait until it comes out? The things kids do, and I was sitting RIGHT there!!

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

I talked to the pediatric urgent care place. They said if he's not vomiting, showing any respiratory issues, eating and drinking, not acting differently, or in pain...give it a few days to pass. If it doesn't pass by Wednesday, take him in for an x-ray. I didn't expect the urgent care to call back so quickly, thanks for your answers in the meantime!!

You ladies are so funny!

tehehe, there was a video on America's Funniest Home Videos with two sisters. One swallowed a quarter, one did not. For three days mom videotaped dad working both girls over with the metal detector. On the THIRD day it finally stopped beeping wildly when held against the Quarter-swallowers stomach!

Does he still wear diapers, or are you going to have to take up toilet-diving?

Do you watch Raising Hope? This reminds me of the most recent (or week before last) episode where they are considering going thru MawMaw's poop b/c she accidentally swallowed her gold tooth. "We're not those people (who sift thru poop)" is what they keep telling themselves. Funny show if you haven't seen it.

I'd wait, esp after reading responses below about how after it's gone so far, there's nothing left to do except wait for the poops.

I think your son is 2.5ish?? My daughter ate a watch battery under 2 years, probably the same size as your tiny fingers.

I called urgent care, I brought her in but waited to long in the waiting room that by the time they did the x-ray, it had passed her stomach so we couldn't give her the meds to make her vomit.

It passed a few days later, it was quite fun being the poop detective! Good luck.

Up his fiber a bit and get some rubber gloves.
You should be able to find it in the next few days.

About 6 months ago my daughter swallowed my wedding rings. I had taken them off to do dishes and she swallowed them when I wasn't looking. She choked on them. It was pretty frightening. My husband had to turn her upside down and pound on her back until they came out. Thank God they came out! For a minute there I thought it might have another ending, but all turned out well. I don't even wear my rings anymore. They are safely in my jewelry box now. Kids, they can take years off our lives in a matter of seconds! I hope all turns out well with your son :)

You should probably have an x-ray done, just in case. If your son is potty trained, while getting the x-ray, ask for a hat for the toilet.

Wow, that's quite a story for HIS wedding.

You definatley want to talk to your ped. When my daughter swallowed a penny, they wanted to listen to make sure she had not aspirated it (into a lung). They ended up doing an xray to make sure it was not stuck in her esophogous and was basically making it through her digestive tract. I never looked for it to come out after that. I know some metals are toxic, and I don't know what might be in a ring. Even if gold isn't toxic for instance, there might be trace amounts of other metals to worry about. So definately call the ped.

I'm sure he'll be fine. I gues syou are going to be looking through some diapers, huh? Bet you never pictured that on your wedding day.

My friend just went through this with her daughter, except she swallowed a dime. They did Xrays to find out where the dime was. Then they sent her back home to dig through poop till they found it. She never found the dime, and after five days they sent her back to XRay, only to find it had passed through her system.

If it doesn't pass, it can get stuck in his system somewhere and cause some serious problems. I am assuming it's gold? You probably need to call your ped. and find out what the toxicity of gold is. They may want you to keep an eye out for certain symptoms. Either way you're gonna need to call the doc. I know it seems simple, what comes in will come out, but sometimes it doesn't come out and it's best if they know where to start looking if something does go wrong.

My nephew swallowed my sister's earring. They had him xrayed and sure enough, he had a little dragonfly shape in his stomach on his xray. Yes, it did come out just fine :)
