Call the school and ask the dress code. At that age it is usually pants or skirts and sparkly tops. Not fancy dresses and shoes. There might be something more formal for the 8th graders later on.

Are you sure it's a dress up dance. My granddaughter is now in the eighth grade and they've only had one dance each year that was dress up. Even then my granddaughter doesn't wear a dress or fancy shoes.

How about a nice department store like Macy's or Dilllards?

I am in the Dallas area and we have a lot of specialty shops with dresses. A lot of it depends on your budget and making sure the dress is age appropriate.

If you have a resale shop like Plato's closet you might find something there.

Last year in 5th grade the only dressy dance my daughter had was our Girl Scout daddy/daughter dance. The YMCA held 4 or 5 other dances and she just wore outfits like she would wear to school.

I think you should be able to find something nice at Penney's, Justice, a bridal shop will have some nice/fancier dresses too.

BTW

A girls medium/8-10 is about the same size as a ladies extra small. The arm holes, leg holes (higher thigh cut), and darts might make the garment not fit right though.

A girls large/12-14 is about the same size as a ladies small and even perhaps a medium. Depending on the cut of the garment. A ladies garment might be more hourglass shaped where the girls garment might be straighter in the middle.

A girls extra large (16) or Pre-teen is the same size as a ladies medium for the most part. Again, ladies have usually had a baby so their hips are usually wider and they might have a tiny tummy left over. So normally the pre-teen size will be extremely close in width and length.

Girls shoes are sized differently too. A girls size 3 is about a ladies 6. A girls 4 is about the same as a 7-7 1/2.

They do this so little girls won't be looking at shoes with spike heels and platforms. They make the girls shoes bigger to fit their adult size feet but keep the style juvinile.

I wear between a 6 1/2 and a 7 1/2 and I can always wear a girls size 4 shoe.

I agree that you should double-check on what the other kids are wearing. Do you know any parents of 6th and 7th graders whose kids starting going to dances in 5th grade? You don't want to dress up your child if everyone else is just wearing sparkly tops and jeans!

Another source is consignment shops and resale shops - most party dresses have only been worn once or twice before the child outgrows them, so you can get some very good buys. Most consignment shops don't accept things that aren't trendy and likely to sell, so sometimes the manager can be helpful to you.

My daughter is in 5th grade so I know how difficult it can be to get a pretty dress that is appropriate for a 10yo to wear. My daughter is a singer so I buy dresses when I see them because I know she will wear it at some point. Believe it or not I have the most luck at Sears. I've bought more dresses there than anywhere else. As a matter of fact I have 3 dresses in her closet that she won't fit into for another year or two but they are classic styles and are perfect for the stage or a piano recital. http://www.sears.com/clothing-girls-dresses/b-###-###-###...

Have fun shopping!!

I would check to see what the other girls are wearing first. My son goes to the community club dances for the grade four, five and six kids and none of the girls are wearing dresses at those dances.
