My 2.5 year old daughter is prone to ear infections and croup. Sometimes she gets both at the same time. We tried several antibiotics that are what I call "level a" which include Z-pac, augmentin, etc. It got to the point where none of these would clear up the infection entirely, so we moved up to "level b" which was an antibiotic called Ceftin.
Ceftin is working well enough, but its been 10 days and she still has some infection. Her dr. does not want to do tubes because of it being so late in the cold/flu season...hoping that she will outgrow some of this before NEXT cold/flu season.
Our pedi is recommending that we keep our daughter home from Mother's Day Out and the church nursery for a month or so until the weather is warmer and the kids stop having runny noses, etc. so she isn't as likely to catch germs and start the process of having an ear infection, etc.
Does anyone else have issues like this? We're torn between wanting to keep her home for a few weeks so she doesn't have infection-after-infection and having her miss out on all the social interaction/activites she'll miss at school...

has your daughter been tested for allergies? I'd have her tested too. my daughter kept getting sick. even developed asthma and it turned out to be that she's allergic to latex. she would touch a balloon and hours later she would be wheezing... wich became a chest cold, etc. etc... with a weakened immune system, she'll catch everything that's going around. wash her hands often too. good luck! ~C.~
I have a 14 month old son that has already had 6 ear infections. He was scheduled to get tubes last week, but didn't because I've been taking him to the chiropractor. I was quite skeptical, and a little nervous to take him, but I heard so many good things from other mamsourcers and others, that I thought it was worth a try before the surgery. We started going just over 2 weeks ago and my son has been feeling great!! He also got horrible coughs with his ear infections. The first week he went 3 times, then 2 times this past week, next week he goes once, then we'll probably skip a week and then go to once a month and so on until we go about once every 6 months. Now, he is breathing easier, sleeping better...and no ear infections or cough! We haven't changed his church nursery attendance or anything at all. Hope she feels better!!
Its just something to consider that your pedi may not suggest. If you are in the Rowlett area, I'd love to recommend my son's chiropractor.
People are so bad about taking their kids or themselves out in public when they are contagious, that I'd be leary right now of taking her with her situation. I don't mean forever, we can't hole up just because we might get something, but sounds like you have an issue here with her infections, that in my opinion I'd keep her home. YOu can start having side effects from meds, or get immune to them, and ear infections too much could cause hearing problems, so just for now, i think I'd be careful.
My son had his first set of tubes when he was 10 months and in Nov. 08 he had his second set and his adenoids removed. It has made a world of differnce. He was on antibiotics every day for almost 6 months. We finally started the Rocephin shots when he was 8 months old then we were referred to an ENT. Take you daughter to one ASAP they can help her. After my son got his first set we came home and noises (t.v., phone, toys) made him cry. I called the ENT because I was so scared the told me that my son was not able to hear all those noises before so loud and he now getting use to the sounds (which scared him). He is doing great we had to get a new set once the old ones fell out, but not big deal and they removed his adenoids just to see if that would help him. I am not sure why your doctor told you not to do tubes most cases of kids who need them is because the fluid does not drain correctly so ful season not they get fluid build up. My son suffers from allergies you daugher might as well so whe might always have fluid draining.
My son is 23 now, but he had terrible ear infections as a child. He had 3 sets of ear tubes. He has mild hearing loss now, but nothing noticeable. What I didn't know then is that immunity builders can really help. For example a good probiotic. If you think your daughter could swallow a tiny pill about 1/2 the size of a pea I have a good one. Otherwise do some research and find another source. This may really help. Vitamin C will probably help too.
Your ped doc is wrong. Keeping her secluded in the house is not the answer for her or you. Get a new doc.
Too many antibiotics over time will hurt her body in the long run. Get her tubes. Good luck!
