My daughter just turned one this week and she only poops once every five days. I found this very unusal so i asked my doctor and he told me since her stomach is soft and she isnt fusy then my babysitter must not be telling me when she goes. first me and my babysitter talk all day long and i trust her 100%. i tried cutting back on bananas and apples and gave her more prunes but no change. The doctor wanted to wait 30 more days to see if there are any changes but it has been like this for a couple of months. Really what is the point in waiting if something is wrong i want to address it now. I would like to know if any other mothers have had this issue with their children that could offer me any advice.

What can I do next?

Is the stool hard and/ or look like little rocks or is it soft? if it's soft and a decent amount I wouldn't worry, but if it's hard and she is having a hard time going then I would really get a second opinion. Actually thinking about I would say just change doctors because my daughter has problem also with pooping and none and I mean none of her doctor ever had told me to wait 30 days!!! ( She's had about 5 since we have moved to different states). Best of Luck and hope you find something that works.

Make sure he is getting plenty of fluids. Water, juice not just milk. When he goes is it hard or uncomfortable? Is it a significant amount? If the poop is normal and the baby is happy, the stomach is soft and not protruding you should just watch and monitor his diet for a while.

Find a different pediatrician. Most of them only get 10 hrs. of nutrition in med. school, so many are clueless when it comes to food.
As one person mentioned, lots of water. And lots of fiber. That would include plenty of veggies and whole grains( rice, barley, millet, quinoa, oats). Ground flax seeds will help as well as acidophilus. Food allergies can cause constipation as well. Major culprits are: dairy, wheat, soy, corn.
Chiropractic care can make a difference with this issue. Adjustments are incredibly gentle. If there is a misalignment around the nerves that affect the intestines then it will make a difference.

I used to give my son a breakfast bowl of whole grain oatmeal (not single grain - it's in the health food aisle), stoneyfield yogurt & applesauce. All these ingredients are about healthy intestines & they tasted very good to him.

I also have heard that pears or pear juice is helpful for constipation.

Simply ask your babysitter if she goes. I had a parent ask me once because she found it strange that her son would only go on the weekends for her. Is she with the sitter for a lengthy amount of time during the week? I take it she stays w/ the sitter at her place and the sitter does not come to your home because otherwise you'd definitely be able to tell if there's a dirty diaper in the garbage. Start counting the number of diapers that are sent each day and ask the sitter how many of them were dirty as compared to just wet. Honestly, she really shouldn't mind the question.

a reason your doctor may want to wait is because many of the methods used to alleviate constipation are habit-forming. i'm not saying your concerns are unfounded just gather all the facts and present them to the doctor. in general, if a child does not go in five days she should be uncomfortable. my daughter had chronic constipation for years. still i'd start with dietary changes. good luck!

I would be asking the sitter to keep track of how many wet diapers and how many dirty diapers a day she is changing so that you can figure out what is wrong... Also try giving her straight baby pear juice so that way it will clean her system out it should help cause I do that with my 9 month old cause he didnt have dirty diapers for several days straight. I would keep track of it so that way they can figure out what is wrong.. it may because she is eating solid foods more and not eat myuch jarred food so i would keep track of it..
Wish you the best of luck

I'm not sure if my answer is going to be of any help to you or not but I figure every little bit helps, right? I have a 4 1/2 month old that is primarily breastfed (we had to start supplementing with formula when I returned to work). We started solids about 3 weeks ago (rice cereal, oatmeal and carrots so far) and our son still only moves his bowels once every two or three days. Until we started solids he only moved his bowels about once a week and he would only dirty one diaper. He still only has one dirty diaper when he moves his bowels. I was worried before we started solids that he didn't go often. His pediatrician said that as long as he didn't seem uncomfortable and his bowel movements weren't hard (which they weren't and still aren't) then there is nothing to worry about. I actually called him the other day because I still felt that he wasn't going often enough, especially since he has started solids. I got the same answer as before. I trust his pediatrician 100%. He was mine when I was growing up and he is also my oldest's. I think maybe the same could apply to your daughter. As long as she isn't having discomfort and her bowels are not hard, she is probably fine. I hope this helps!

is she pooping normal stools? or does she have a hard time pooping? does she act constipated and have a hard time passing stools? does she have diahrrea whens he does go?

every one is different.. some folks poop every day, but 3 times a day is normal and every 3 days is normal too.

did this just start after you switched her to whole milk?

I would get a second opinion for sure! That is great you have such a good relationship with your sitter. I would say to have her mark any unusual behaviors or crying during the day whether she feels is significant or not. I would try to document the food she eats for the next several days. I am sure the doctor would like to see that if you haven't already done so. I wonder if there is any way to add more fiber to her diet? Sounds like your unhappy with the doctors response so I would try to find someone who will listen and understand your concerns. Good luck and don't go crazy searching everyting under the sun online. :o) Your a great Momma for looking into things further and not settling for the doctors response to wait it out another month.
