How long should it take to recover physically from a miscarriage. I miscarried two weeks ago. I was only 6-10 weeks along. A couple of days ago I finally almost quit bleeding, just a little brown spotting. Now today its more of a very light flow. Im thinking maybe it could have been caused from some stress today but dont know what to really think. My doctor recommended if the bleeding doesnt stop soon he wants to put me on birthcontrol to regulate my hormones. I would rather avoid taking the birthcontrol or any other medications if at all possible.

What can I do next?

J.,

Hi, my name is T.. I usually don't respond to a lot of the posts on here, but after reading yours, I just had to.

I have suffered a total of 6 miscarriages when I was younger, and in the end was lucky enough to deliver 1 healthy boy, who is now 28.

Everyone is different in how they recover, but...depending on how far along you were...it could take up to 6 to 8 weeks to totally quit bleeding.

Your miscarriage was just like giving birth as far as your uterus is concerned. It was engorged with blood vessels and ready and able to feed and nurture your baby for the duration...unfortunately...your duration was cut extremely short.

You say you have a 3 and 1 y/o at home....remember back to their births and how long you bled with them...if you breast fed, it was shorter...but without having a baby to feed, it will take longer for your uterus to return to normal.

Good luck with everything....and my sincerest condolences....

T.

Recovery takes up to 4 months. If your doc wants you on the pill, ask questions and ask if an estrogen patch for 3 days might be a better alternative. I went thru 3, they are no fun! I used estrogen patches (one on each side of my abdomen) to stop the bleeding.

Hi J.,So sorry for your loss. It has been years but I had several miscarriages to have my two beautiful now adult kids. One of the most helpful things my md explained to me is that it takes a couple of months for the immediate healing to take place but that it takes the body 19 months to fully recover, get everything back in sync and for the emotional healing to have time to process. This is not to discourage you any way. Be gentle with yourself, talk to your doc and give your body and soul time to work through. I know how important it is to get back to taking care of family and to feel like life is ok again but don't expect your healing to finish today. Best wishes.

Hi J.,

It will take your body some time to recover. Each person is different based on how long it takes hcg levels to go down. You are only 2 weeks out. Give it more time before starting hormones. Most likely your body will regulate itself again. Give it at least a good 3 months. As another person posted, I remember I stopped bleeding long before my hcg levels were down. It just takes time. Take care.

surprised your dr thinks you should be done soon. I miscarried at 15 weeks and bled for 4 or 5 weeks and was painful just like having a baby. I had 3 c-sections and bled about 6 weeks after they were born. I didn't start taking birth control until after the 6 week check-up basically when the bleeding stopped.

Hi J.,
I'm very sorry for your loss.
I don't think bleeding that long (or longer)is unusual--it just depends on how long it takes your body to pass all the tissue (and how far along you were). As long as you're not bleeding heavily I would think it's ok (but I"m no doctor). I just mc as well. I bled for around two weeks too, but it took maybe another week for all the discharge to stop. I've been having my hcg levels checked weekly so we can run blood tests when hcg = zero (since this is my third mc), and as of last week (4.5 weeks since the bleeding started) my levels are still over 400 (even though I've got my period now), so I think it takes our bodies longer to recover than we think. Take care of yourself. C. D

J.,
I am so sorry for your loss. I mc three times before God blessed us with our two beautiful children. My first and third ones, if I remember right I bled for about 2-3 weeks. My second one I bled for 3 weeks I think and my doctor then suggested a D-N-C because she felt there was some tissue "still holding on" that was not going to discharge itself. She was correct, after that I think it was a few days.
I think a lot of it depends on your own body, but just thought I would let you know my experience.
God bless you and keep you and yours.
J.

I wanted to say that I am very sorry for your loss. We lost our only baby girl 5 years ago.
I have not been in your situation, but when I got off of Depo I bled off & on for a month before my dr. put me on the pill to get the bleeding to stop & rein in my hormones. I was on it for a few months before I was able to stop the pill.

God bless!
