Mid Section Weight Solution

Hi Moms,
I've struggled with weight for the past 28 years and I've come to accept myself as I am; however, I would like to find out if you know of a good diet/routine that will help with excess fat in the mid section/belly, since I really hate how it looks whenever I try to wear a t-shirt or just blouses that tend to be a little tight around that area, not counting the fact that its the area where fat affects the most in terms of leading to diabetes and heart problems.
Thank you all, any help will be appreciated!

Two things that have finally worked for me. Exercise with Kettlebells (look up GoFit Kettlebells), and the book, The Insulin-Resistance Diet (basically a diabetic diet) which you eat 3 meals plus 2-3 snacks per day, always with protein to balance the carbs.

I've been preaching the "green tea" thing here all week. It really works wonders. Takes out the bloat in your belly, suppresses your appetite, is an antiinflammatory, has other good redeeming qualities such as a natural detox. I've been sipping four, five, sometimes 6 cups of hot tea with a spoonful of local honey for a little over a month now and I've lost 25lbs. I just use regular Lipton green tea bags. Put my coffee pot on the shelf and havent looked back. It's worth the try, it can't hurt. I'd give it a whirl as part of your regimine.
I havent exercised a lick cuz I've been experiencing some back problems. I can only imagine what it would be like coupled with some aerobics throughout the day.... double benefits.
My favorite snack when I get hungry between meals is celery with pnut or almond butter on it. It's crunchy, salt and sweet all at the same time and is low fat, fiber, and protein. Wrap your celery in foil when you bring it home from the grocery store, it will stay crisp 3x's longer than normal.

I have the same problem even when my weight is down - I think it's genetic. It's very frustrating to dress, especially all the fitted t shirts/tops they sell these days. The best thing I have found is to virtually eliminate white bread, pasta, white rice, potatoes, white flour, white sugar from your diet. Consider that these things are every now and then treats - like once a week. Replace with vegetables and fruits. A fruit crisp made with oatmeal and a little brown sugar is better than cookies or cake. Vegetables with bread crumbs, parmesan cheese and butter is better than potatoes or pasta. It's kind of an Eat This Not That strategy. I cook and freeze a lot so that I will always have healthy options available. Send me a message if you want some good vegetable/fruit recipes. Good luck!

Christy J. is right on the mark.

You cannot spot reduce - it just isn't possible! You can do a million crunches but if you don't address the issue with cardio and nutrition, you'll wind up with a six-pack abs of steel that is well-insulated and protected.

The best way is to make sure you are paying attention to your eating. The concept of 'clean eating' would be especially helpful. It isn't some goofy diet where you take dangerous supplements, omit entire categories of food, and starve yourself. It is eating good, healthy food that will do wonders for your body. Google Tosca Reno and Clean Eating and you'll find a lot of information.

The other thing you should do is focus on is cardio. You do not have to spend hours on end with cardio. 30-45 minutes 5 days a week is sufficient. Make sure you're working up a sweat and really challenging yourself in intervals (go fast for a bit then slow down, repeat for the workout).

Finally - avoid any fad diet, fad diet products, meal replacements or shakes, cleanses, pills, or any other plan that you won't be adopting for a lifetime. Weight loss and body management is a lifelong commitment and taking pills, using shakes, cutting out entire categories of food are dangerous options to continue for a lifetime.

This isn't a way to lose weight, but I recently found a tank top that I LOVE that really smoothes out my tummy. I got it at JC Penney, and the brand is I am Yummie. (weird name, I know) It is just a white tank top that you can easily wear under anything, and there is this tight stretchy band that goes around your mid-section. It really smoothes things out and gets rid of 'muffin top.' And its very comfortable! I would highly recommend it! I think it was around $15 - totally worth it!

after having my son I was horrified at the extra skin and fat around my mid section...I went will Jana Kunitz Core Rythems workouts. I do the Sexy Abs 3 times a week and Lower Body Sculpt 3 times a week with a cardio workout 4 times a week (all workouts were about 30 min each) and I really changed my eating habits. I cut out a lot of processed foods, fast food, fats, pop, juice, and junk. Now I mostly eat foods that have to be cut up and I have to spend about 30 min at least cooking. I switched to whole grain (brown rice instead of white etc) and I eat smaller more frequent meals. I drink water during the day and 1% milk with meals. After 6 months I have a rock hard 6 pack abs, and LOVE them. It's the first time in my life I've truely been happy with my body. I weigh 10lbs less than I did pre-pregnancy and ppl tell me all the time how much better I look.

I wish you lots of good luck and lots of motivation...it took a lot for me to stick with it!!

You can exercise and tone beneath the fat but your body has a pre-disposed way of taking off and/or putting on weight based on your genetics. THERE IS NOTHING YOU CAN DO ABOUT THAT. If you tend to take it off first in your legs, face or wherever, that's where it will occur, REGARDLESS of how many hours you spend exercising/toning your mid section.

Bottom line, you need cardiovascular and/or weight bearing/resisting exercise and a change in diet - plenty of fruits, vegetables and protein and limited fats (some good fats are needed) and limited refined carbs (if any). Some small changes can make big differences. Don't skip meals, eat smaller portions, limit dessert to weekends and exercise.

I put weight on the same way and I love the South Beach Diet. It's based on the glycemic index - basically how much the food spikes your blood sugar and causes cravings. It's really just a very healthy way to eat and pretty simple once you get the idea down of what you can or can't eat and how big a serving is. You can choose to do the first two weeks of the diet without eating carbohydrates, fruit, sugar, or alcohol. The first time I went on the diet I had so many cravings the first week! But by the end of the second week, I didn't crave any of that stuff and I felt really healthy. You do not have to do the first two weeks that way, but you'll lose a nice amount of weight right off the bat if you do. The author of the diet is a heart surgeon and it has been well supported by the medical community as a healthy way to eat for life and not just a "diet."

Working your abs won't get rid of the fat, but it will help your posture so you will look leaner. I like to do crunches using an exercise ball. You have to flex all your abdominal muscles for stability and I find it much more comfortable on my back and neck than doing them on the floor. Good luck!

Please know that I understand that there is no quick fix. That weight management is a way of life not a "diet" every 6 monthes or so. The program that I use to eat healthier and eliminate the worry over diabetes and heart problems is the Cinch plan from Shaklee. It helps to control and balance all those sugars and cravings. check it out livingwithsolutions.com and read what a great program it is. It truly is the best plan on the market today. Not a diet a way to live! Good Luck S.

Eat only whole plant foods. No animal products. Nothing processed, like sugar, white bread, white rice, etc. Where do animals get their nutrition? Plants. This means, veges, fruit, whole grains, nuts, legumes. Not 'fruit rollups'. Apples, oranges etc. the whole thing not just the juice. raw and cooked veges. There are alot of great vegetarian recipes out there, but make sure you really limit the dairy products cause those aren't necessary for nutrition, and are high in fat and cholesterol. Also try using a rebounder for exercise. It takes up very little space and exercises the entire body not just specific muscles so you get a rounded exercise program!

Hi D.S. how we carry weight is mostly genetic. I tend to carry weight on my hips rather than my waist.

However, a couple of years ago I was on high doses of oral steroid and WOW did I gain weight fast around my middle!!! Not just a little - like 4-5 inches in less than 2 months. I was gaining weight like crazy but it seemed to hit my middle the hardest. I used one of those cortisol blockers and the inches really came off fast.

The names are like Corti-Trim Corti-Slim - (theres a bunch of them). Look at the ingredients list and if it looks like it is safe to use for your health profile, meds, etc. you may want to give it a try.

Genetics is one thing, but people can still improve things.. so don't buy into that aspect of things.. I think if you read up , you 'll find that things such as a high intake of starch from white flour and things such as pasta can result in belly fat, additionally, soda in the diet which is very fattening to the mid-section.
I find that when it comes to reducing belly fat, I have had to cut down on processed carbs, (breads, cereals) and IF I choose to eat them, they serve me best in the am and nothing pass noon.. So for example, I might eat cheerios for breakfast with 2% milk , MAYBE but not always sandwich for lunch, but will try for broiled chicken and veggies.. however, by dinner.. NO carbs such as bread, etc.. however, carbs from fruit or veggies is ok..
so............. cut down on processed carbs.. monitor your true intake of food.. (keep a journal) all those bites, licks and tastes add up!! also. increase water intake so much so that your urine runs clear.. why is water so important apart from cleansing one's system.. it is because it helps keep your metabolism going. even if 1% dehydrated, your metabolism slows down... so drink drink.. cut out soda of course.. even simple things like this will help to get that belly fat off..

Unfortunately, we can't decide where fat will come off from (too bad since I have places I'd like to highlight), but find a good eating plan that you can continue for life and an exercise plan that you enjoy. Really, you are looking at a permanent food and lifestyle change that is going to make you feel better and be healthier. Good for you for accepting your looks and working on making yourself healthier for the future!

DS - I think there are a lot of good responses here about loosing weight in a natural and healthy way. I think that putting a little exercise in anyone's day can do a lot in itself. And this can just be adding 20 min. of walking in the beginning. Carry a step counter to keep you motivated. 10k steps is the ultimate goal but start small in the beginning.

I do know of a good and natural weight loss program through Shaklee called Cinch. Shaklee is actually the #1 natural nutrition company in the US and every product they have is natural, safe and scientifically tested to prove this along with how well their products actually work. For weight management, Shaklee wanted a program that took off the fat but maintained muscle mass and that is what Cinch does. Their products are so wonderful and Cinch will help you keep it off. I am a Shaklee distributor and really love helping people reach their goals in health and nutrition, so if you are interested in this at all, please feel free to contact me to talk more. There is a video on this link that tells you a bit more about the Cinch Inch loss program.
