Safest Weight Loss

Hi! I need to lose a lot of weight as safely and quickly as possible. I have very personal reasons for this, but it is something I need to do in the next 3-4 months. So I have a time limit too. I would like to lose at least 2 pounds a week. I know that quicker weight loss is supposed to not be safe, but is there anything out there that can take off weight maybe just a bit quicker than that (while still maintaining muscle) and so that when you actually go back to eating normally (like the body for life Bill Phillips way or just really good, careful nutrition) you don't gain back weight, I am talking maintaining at just under 2000 calories a day, not eating way over and not eating junk food, baking etc. I want this to be a way of life, but I need to get about 40 pounds off in the next 3 or so months, can't take much longer than that. Sorry I can't go into lots of details about why, it is just something I need to do...any ideas out there??!!

What can I do next?

Hi. I used Slim4Life, and they average 3-5 pounds per week. They give you a very specific diet to follow, with specific serving sizes and a food list. You get so many starches, fruits, veggies, and proteins a day, and get to choose servings from a food list. Anyway, I lost 40 lbs pretty quickly using them. I think it was 20 weeks, but it is a pretty good, balanced program with quick results.

Good luck!

You said the magic words "while retaining muscle". So many weight loss programs lose muscle as well as fat. I sell Shaklee and we have a weight loss program called Cinch. It has Leucine to help you preserve muscle and so much protein and fiber you really feel full. For more information please visit my website is www.CinchPlan.com/MaryCamp. Good Luck with whatever you choose, weight loss is hard but cinch makes it easier!!

hi -- I got tired of the extra weight and started just before thanksgiving -- I just ate fruit and veggies for breakfast and lunch and a regular dinner with no seconds -- the week after Christmas, i had lost 35 pounds -- I still do that every once and a while to maintain what I want -- but I felt eating fruit and veggies was very healthy and I could eat almost as much as I wanted and still lost the weight -- I didnt' eat bread or potatoes -- but I did eat a cookie or piece of candy about every other day -- good luck!

a couple things you could try: Lean Cuisine diet. You eat a normal breakfast like cereal, yogurt or what ever you eat then eat a lean cuisine for lunch and dinner. They only have around 300 to 400 calories in a meal so for lunch and dinner that's like around 800 calories then add in your breakfast and maybe a healthy snack or two and your well under the 2000 calorie a day limit. It can get a little old but there are lots and lots of different lean cuisines to choose from. You could also do the no card. That diet works really, really well. Good luck.

I started working out at the Y 3 times a week. About 20 minutes on the treadmill getting the heart rate up to 65% (there's a chart & heart rate monitor on the treadmill) which is the fat-burning rate. Then 5 minutes on either the rowing machine, or the bicycle or 5 on each. Then about 45 minutes lifting weights using the machines. Some legs, some abs, some arms. I lost about 10 lbs a month for 6 months (I couldn't afford new clothes so often so I had to slow down). I didn't cut my calories (about 2000 a day) but I did re-arrange when I took them in. Light, high protein breakfast. Small snack mid-morning (like a yogurt or some carrots or an apple). Light lunch - more carby than the breakfast but still more protein. Small snack mid-afternoon (nuts or something high protein to keep me going) and then regualr dinner. Ok to have about half a serving of a surgary thing with dinner twice a week.

What I found when I stopped working out was that it was pretty easy to maintain the weight I lost by continuing to be active (going for walks) and continuing to spread out the calories through the day.

I've recently started working out again and I'm again experiencing 2-5 lbs a week weight loss.

Wow, Stacy. Congratulations on your 15 1/2 year marriage and your 4 wonderful children. I am a mother of 3 amazing girls myself so I fully know the rigors of child bearing and rearing. I also have 22 years of marriage under my belt and am currently married to the most incredible person I have ever met in my life! I also have been a fitness professional for over 20 years now and own my own studio at my home here in Castle Rock where I train many, many clients in a state of the art studio, completely privately. This being said I would like to give you a quick tip on weight loss. First, you need all nutrients in your diet - fats, carbs and protein. Your carbs need to be complex (think nuts, grains, fruits and veggies with lots of colour) and your protein complete (meat/fish source). You need at least 35 grams of fiber in your diet as well and with that you also need lots of water. About 60 - 70% of your diet should be complex carbs (which also contain great sources of fiber, however, fiber is NOT a nutrient. It is the undigested cellulose of plant material - fruits/veggies - that comes in 2 forms: soluble and unsoluble. You need both) High fiber/complex carbohydrates stay in your digestive system longer and take more energy for the body to break down, leaving you feeling more 'full'. You cannot diet from taking out a nutrient (such as a carb free diet) and keep the weight off. You will also do damage to your body if you do. Appetite suppressants, diuretics and stimulants (caffeine, guarana, taurine etc) are chemicals which, when the effect wears off, leave you craving more and eating more. It's a vicious cycle with those guys! Your precise measurements of healthy fats, comlex carbs and complete protein is important as they rely on each other for the body to utilize and absob them completely and efficiently. There is only one company which is able to offer this type of product without the nasty stimulants, diuretics and suppressants I was mentioning. Their name is Usana Health Sciences and you and your doctor can find them in the pharmeceutical PDR as they are actually recommended by doctors to be taken by people with different ailments and disorders. They have a full medical advisory board with MD's (not DO's) from notable medical schools and universities such as Harvard and Stanford. They are so free of harmful additives that our olympic athletes take these products without worry of side effects. I do work, with a doctor, for Usana and they have a 5-day Reset program which you can purchase through me for @ $118. This program contains meal replacements for 5 days, snack bars (not energy bars) for 5 days, nutritional supplementation and antioxidants for morning and night for 5 days and a dvd which was put together by one of Usana's doctors and a couple of olympic gold medalists to let you know what is happening inside your body when you eat; what to eat; how to exercise and a full exercise segment which you can do at home. Weight loss in this 5 days is expected to be up to 12lb but I have seen it average around 8lb, of course a couple each just finished it last week, loosing 10lb a piece in the 5 days. This is safe and effective weight loss from proper and precise nutrition and cellular repair to get your metabolic rate back and your insulin levels back to normal. It is important that you do exercise while you loose weight as if you diet alone for weight loss, for every lb in weight you loose, 75% of that is muscle mass. You can only build muscle by overloading it with exercise. With all the products out there it is important that you are fully informed. Make sure you look for proper nutrition. You can check out Usana through my website if you like at www.myfridayfitness.com and click on the nutrition and diet tab where you will find a link to my Usana site. If you have any questions whatsoever, please don't hesitate to call me and I will be glad to help you. The price I quoted you for the Reset is my cost plus an estimate for tax and shipping and handling. You can use credit or debit if you like. The prices you see on the website are retail so call me if you would like to get the Reset at the price I estimated for you. I sure hope I hear from you soon. Take care and I hope you are able to accomplish your goals and ease the worries of your personal situation. Again, please let me know if I can be of any further help with any questions you may have. I would love to hear from you.

Your on the right track by eating better and making it a lifestyle. Most people that loss wight can't go back to eaithing what they consider normal, that is what got them there in the first place.

loosing wight is honestly about intake and activity. But you must do both in order for weight to come off quickly. 70% food choice 30% activity. Find someone that can help you with motivation, someone you can talk to, someone who will hold you accountable.

And lastly, you obviously have a personal reason that spark your your desire to loose the weight. Keep that thought in the front of your mind everytime you want to cheat with food, or skip a work out. remember your motiavation all the time and make it very personal.

Don't forget to exercise. It will help maintain muscle while you are losing the weight, and afterwards, it will help keep the weight off. A couple warnings: One, muscle weighs more than fat, so if you start dieting and exercising at the same time, you might not lose as much as you might expect at the very beginning. Two, if there are health reasons why you need to lose this weight, talk to your doctor before you begin exercising. Finally (slightly off-topic), don't take anything to clean your colon out -- all those products do is cause you to lose water and important nutrients. Good luck!

If you want to remain healthy, fast weight loss is not good. I know you have your reasons, but I think you need to take off as much as you can by exercise and watching what you eat.(Lots of fruits and veggies) I say this from experience. You don't really mention whether or not you are exercising. If you aren't, I would strongly suggest that you begin a walking program every day. WAlk as fast as you can for a half hour. If you are able, start jogging for as many minutes of that as you can. You'll be able to increase your speed and endurance this way, and it will definitely help you lose weight..
Good luck!!

Try signing up for the Weight Watchers program. They will let you know how much you can eat in a day to lose 2 pounds a week. You can then add exercise onto that to lose a little extra. They will also tell you losing more than 2 pounds per week is not safe, but I think as long as you are eating healthy and exercising you will be okay. Go to weightwatchers.com and check it out. They give you a number of points for every food and you log everything you eat. It makes it very easy. They will also monitor your progress. Good luck!

Good luck with your goal. I don't know how heavy you are right now or why you need to lose the weight, but I will share with you what I have learned. I have always kept close tabs on nutrition and exercise guidelines, although I am not always very good at following them. I have found there are just a few things you can do to lose weight that are simple and essentially free.

1. Write down everything you eat, including the calories. This requires measuring your food, reading labels, and looking up nutrition information. If the food you are eating does not have a label you can usually find it at www.nutritiondata.com or by googling it on the web. You can also get a nutrition info book like "Calorie King" to help you with restaurant food and when you are on the road. I can feel really good eating about 1500 calories a day, but listen you your body. Everyone has a different caloric need.

2. Exercise six days a week, preferably for 1 hour. If you can't do an hour make sure you do something every day and do an hour whenever you can. This needs to be both strength training and cardio. You need 2-3 strenght training workouts per week for 30-60 minutes each workout. They can be combined with cardio or just done by themselves. I saw that another mother recommended jogging and if you can do it, great. You can burn more calories running than just about anything else. However, you need to listen to your body. If you haven't been running or if you are very overweight you can injure yourself and sabotage your weight loss plans in a hurry. Make sure you find something you like to do so that you will actually do it.

3. Get enough sleep!

4. Drink plenty of water and eliminate juice and other drinks with calories from your diet.

5. Weigh yourself every day. They did a study recently and found that for a large group of people who had lost weight, those who weighed themselves everyday kept the weight off. This who weighed themselves once a week put on about 5-10 pounds.

The above activities are habit changes that should be permanent. You will most likely be able to meet your goal and stay healthy if you do all of them. It will also help you keep the weight off. It would really be discouraging to put the weight back on after working so hard.

Good luck!

My mom was losing about 2-5 pounds per week by simply eating healthy food and exercising 1 hour per day. Don't eat anything with High Fructose Corn Syrup or hydrogenated oils because those are VERY unhealthy for you.

The healthiest thing for your body is to workout and eat great. No pill or diet that limits what you eat or by taking a pill is going to be healthy for you for the rest of your life.

Whatever your reasons are, just be healthy about how you lose weight.

One of the safest ways to loose weight is a Diabetics Diet. We call it a "Live It Plan". You are right that you can loose 2 - 5 lbs a week and that is safe. When you do a Diabetics diet then you may loose up to 10 lbs the first week if you drink your water and eat right. Depending on your age, weight, etc you can easily eat as much at 1200 - 1400 calories a week and begin loosing. If you don't have a plan available to you then Weight Watchers is a really good option and you can do that on line. I lost down to 121 several years ago and I maintained that weight for 3 years and then my sister was killed and it gained it all back and more. I tried WW, but I haven't stayed consistant and therefore I have not lost any more. Are you ready for this for yourself? If you aren't nothing will help. Good Luck!!!! Kay

If you want a meal plan made for your, EDiets works great for that. I have efectively used that site a couple of times and if I stick to my meal plan I always lose the 2 pounds a week. You can also join challenge groups, if you do ED I recommend the Shinning Stars. Those ladies are awesome. on the meal plans, you get to pick from a list of them and the way you want your meals to be, already prepared ones like lean cuisine, or from ones you make at home. It also gives you your snacks for the day and what you need to add to your meal for the lean cuisine's to have the correct calorie count. I felt like I was eating TONS! But eat everything on the plan and you will lose the weight. One of the biggest mistakes I make is not eating enough calories and then my body goes into a shock and it takes longer to lose the weight. So don't do that to yourself. I've lost 15 lb in a month before becuase my body just sighed with relief I think that it was getting good balanced nutrition. EDiets does cost a little each month, not much but a little.
If you don't have funds, try Sparkspeople. You can also join teams and challenges. And get support buddies just like on ED. And you can track your meals. I think you can have it help build you a meal plan as well. I haven't used that feature yet so I am not sure how it works. but it is the website I am using now. Between the 2 sites last year I lost 36 pounds. I lost all of that in about 4 months.
I have to track my calorie intake or I don't eat enough, or I eat too much in a day. It helps too if I am going out to eat I check out the restraunt before going and predetermine from the online menu what I will order so that I don't even pull out the menu to tempt fate. :) It helps me stay on plan even if lunch is running to a fast food joint, I've done my calorie count before going and know what I am getting.
FitDay is also a great site but I like Sparks because the format is closer to the ED one that I was using before, and many of my old challenge buddies are on Sparks.
I like that the site is set up to track calories for me instead of me trying to add it up--I'm not good at that but I am pretty good about getting on and tracking what I am eating for the day. I make the plan up for the week and then get on and verify each day that I have stayed on plan.
Good luck.

Hi S.. I've always done Weight Watchers when I've needed to lose weight (after baby, etc.) I could be a spokesperson for them because I believe in it so much. If you really follow the plan and exercise you can lose two pounds a week without feeling sick. And it teaches you how to eat well so you keep the weight off. I do the online version because I don't want to go to meetings. It's pretty affordable - I think it's about $30 to join and $16 a month thereafter. It's really easy to follow too. Feel free to send me a message if you have any questions. Good luck! I know how hard it can be!

Go for whole grain foods and lots of veggies. They fill you up for longer without adding a lot of calories. A bit of protein with a meal can also do that. Basically, the best bet is a good, balanced diet (eating habit) that you can stick to even after the weight is gone.

Also add exercise to the routine. I lost about 3-4 pounds a week by modifying my diet and daily exercise. I would do a cardio exercise for about 30 min (start at 15 or 20 if your not used to it). It should be in the 'moderate' range, where your heartrate is about 60% of maximum (220-age give a rough approximation of maximum) and then start adding anaerobic bursts where you increase the intensity to a high level for 30 seconds to one minute (it should be high enough that you can only maintain it for that short amount of time) then allow your self to recover at a lower pace before continuing with your workout (but don't stop altogether after the burst, it's not good for your circulation and kind of defeats the purpose.) What this does is force your body to use the sugar stored in your muscles as it can't burn fat in the anaerobic period and your body will then replace that sugar and create a bigger store, meaning less calories are being stored as fat. Do this 3-4 times a week. Also do resistance training (weights, exercise with the band, yoga, pilates, etc) 2-3 times a week. Always give your muscles a day to recover in between so don't work the same muscle group 2 days in a row. What you'll be doing is training your body to use more calories throughout the day, so it has to go to the fat stores. It also makes maintaining easier, as long as you keep the good eating and exercise habits (although you can drop the intensity of both a bit after you hit your goal).

I love the Body for Life diet and exercise plan. I found that it is really easy and efficient and something you can do for a long time. It is a very balanced way of eating and the workouts are fast and efficient, too. I lost 27 pounds in 12 weeks on the plan and stayed on it until I got pregnat with my first baby. If you're in a hurry, you might extend the cardio workouts to 30 or 40 minutes instead of the recommended 20. The thing I like best about Body for Life is it leaves you looking lean with great muscle tone.

My sister recently went vegan and quit eating wheat(many north americans have an allergy and they don't even know it). It seems like a very restrictive diet, but there's actually a lot of really good fruit and vegetable dishes and you can have fun with adding different flavors (salsa, agave nectar or honey, cashew butter- mmmm). She trys to eat mostly raw food, food that has not been cooked, that stuff really fills you up! Plus not cooking the food leaves the carbs in more complex forms, instead of breaking them into sugars, that takes your body much longer to process and thus get hungry again. Be prepared for your body to adjust to much healthier foods and do plenty of research to ensure your getting adequate nutrition from what you are eating, eating local foods is much more nutritious as well because they haven't been packed-up in storage for months so try to find a co-op nearby to buy your produce. At least reducing meat will help clean-out your colon (a very unhealthy organ for most americans)

Oh my mom also lost 15 lbs. in one month just by drinking a pint of de-chlorinated water at room temp. with a tbs. of organic lemon juice (no sugar) in it first thing in the morning. This starts your day cleaning-out your kidneys so that they can take on the toxins produced by converting fat into energy. If you don't drink a ton of water nothing will help because you need that water to keep everything functioning- I carry a liter water bottle with me and drink two refills a day, this makes it easier.

The safest and fasted way to lose weight is to run every day and cut out processed sugar from your diet. Running burns more calories than any other exercise. Processed sugar is a diet killer and will hinder your efforts. A good rule of thumb for eating is to have one palmful of protiein and two palmfuls of carbohydrates per meal with light snacks in between. Add color to your plate. An example of a "colorful" meal would be: white fish, yellow squash, and a green salad with orange carrots and red tomatoes. That will help ensure you are getting enough nutrients. Getting enough nutrients will help you look better and give you the energy to exercise to lose weight. Drink plenty of water and get enough sleep.

I lost 30 lbs in 3 months eating around 1600 calories a day/ 30 - 35 grams of fat a day. I've heard 1200 calories a day is the absolute lowest you're supposed to go, and if you're working out, higher than that. I did the Biggest Loser workout video 3 times a week (it's hard!) and also did a strength training workout (by Jillian Michaels) 2-3 times a week. It was extremely difficult but I was determined to lose it and was so happy when the weight was gone. I've also heard very good things about Jillian Michaels new workout video... and she does kick your butt! Good luck! :]

This works well for me, but I do have to warn you, you are going to need to be able to exert some self-control. Start off the morning with a cup of tea, whole grain cereal, and some sort of fruit, like an apple, pear, or orange. You CAN eat bananas, but they tend to fill you up more and will keep you from being hungry for lunch....which if you push back lunch might throw a kink in your eating schedule. (Try eating half a banana with meals or in between....apples are best in my opinion) For lunch, eat a well balanced meal, sandwiches, pasta....any number of things are okay....make this your main meal of the day. Don't overindulge, but it's okay to have pasta or a baked potato. Then for dinner, eat another bowl of cereal. If you get hungry in the evening before bedtime, eat another piece of fruit, again-apple, pear, orange....at this point NO bananas, and things like watermelons have a high water content, which can be okay, but personally for me, I find they don't help with weight loss.

Throughout the day, drink plenty of tea, which is a natural diarrhetic, and will help to keep your body regular and flush your system out (no, not uncontrollably...more comfortably and in a totally healthy manner), while providing all sorts of antioxidants. Both green and black teas are good for you. Coffee is okay too. Drink plenty of water, which will help flush your system, as well as help you from feeling hungry. Also, replace ALL sodas....completely cut them out....even the diet ones. Replace them with juice. Lots of people criticize the high sugar content of juices, HOWEVER, you get your fruit servings which ARE important, and the type of sugar boost you get is natural and long lasting. Even calorie counting, I find that if I exceed my daily allotment of calories, if it's due to juice intake, it doesn't react negatively with me, and in fact, still aids weight loss.

Plus, the natural sugar boost will aide you in the necessary exercise you WILL need to do. I don't go the gym or run...I walk....EVERYWHERE. I walk my kids the mile school, walk the additional 1/2 mile into town. After dinner, take a stroll around the neighborhood. This will maintain muscle and tone, while not building, and burn fat. It might take a couple of days to get into the swing of things, but you will be surprised at how quickly the weight will start coming off. Even if you don't see improvement on the scale right away, you WILL notice it when looking in the mirror, and then the scale will follow quickly.

Best of luck!

Hi S. - losing weight can be a real challenge. I know from personal experience. I lost a lot of weight with help from Metabolic Research. They have an office in aurora. If you follow the program you will lose 3 pounds a week guaranteed. It is basically "lean and green" but works with your body to maintain your blood sugar levels. I showed the menu to my doctor and she said it is one of the healthiest programs she has seen and is now recommending it to patients.

The program is designed is help you lose bodyfat and maintain muscle mass.

It takes some discipline but the weight loss is very motivating.

http://www.emetabolic.com/

My basic program was basically eggs cottage cheese etc with lite toast and 70 cal protein drink at breakfast. protein drink for snack. BIG salad with 4oz lean meat, fruit and protein drink at lunch. Protein drink for afternoon snack. Dinner is BIG salad with 4oz lean meat with small carb and protein drink. There are a lot of different exchanges to choose from to vary the menu and they provide lots of recipes. I was never hungry.
