Happy Mother's Day Mamas!!
My sister is at the beginning stage of menopause. She is having hot flashes. She says she has body odor as a result of the hot flashes and hormones/body changes. She lives in another state where the weather is hot most of the time, so this contributes to her problem. Any advice on soaps, powders, deoderants, natural remedies, etc. for her body odor? Thanks.

Hi Y P!

I have the same problem, although I get foot odor, too!

I have tried ALL kinds of different deoderants, honestly, but the one that seems to work the best for me is AVON's. I put it on about 3 times a day, and also on my feet at bedtime :o) It has truly helped with my body odor.

Hi

A great way to help with body odor is to go to a health food store and buy chlorophyll. You can get it in mint or regular flavor. 1 tsp one or two times a day by mouth, (straight or in water, juice). I keep mine in the fridge it tastes better that way to me. Just be careful- it really stains and the bottle it comes in is impossible to pour out of without spilling. It is plant derived and works really well. It also helps with anemia and digestion. Hope this helps and take care. **Just wanted to update and let you know that chlorophyll isn't a hormonal supplement and is actually very safe, it is used by medical patients with various disorders including those with colostomy bags to help reduce unpleasant odors.**

Hi Y P , I've gone through Menopause . I sweat so much ! I tried Evening Primrose and Black Cohosh . It helped a little. I heard about prescription strength deodorant that are over the counter(get 1 that have moisturizers cause it really drys the skin) , so I tried it. it seemed to work for underarms but my hot flashes still were strong and often. So now I'm taking a mild hormone replacement (Rx). I get about 2 hot flashes a day not nearly as bad as before. I'm not sweating like before and my sex drive is back ! Good luck to your sister . K.

I have had that problem for some time myself and have found relief in a couple of ways. Showering in the morning and before bed, keeping Shower to Shower body powder on hand for the stickies and most helpful, the new clinical strength deodorants that you can get (I use Degree). Make sure to put the deodorant in ALL the areas needed such as between breasts, under arms (of course) and also backs of knees and inside elbows. I have even used it in the small of my back during the hottest part of summer.

My grandmother said that during "the change" as she called it, she swore by Ban roll-on deodorant. I use it myself, and have been very pleased with the results although I'm not in menopause. (But my job does require me to be out in the heat almost all day, so if it weren't working, I'd know!)

I changed my diet completely from lots of fast food and processed foods, to a strict vegan diet. I follow Dr. John McDougall's starch based diet of starch, grains, vegetables, fruits, beans, etc. ( no meat, no dairy, no oil). I have changed my body by losing 60 pounds and my body odors (all of them) have really dimished. I love this change and I'll never go back to my old standard american diet. I am 58 years young. I use only deodorant and don't need to invest $$$ in anything else to mask body odors anymore. My granddaughter used to tell me that I stink, even when I just took a shower. She could smell the odor of my skin. I have been eating this way for two years now and she snuggles closer than ever. She hasn't mentioned any offensive body in me for over a year and a half. I'm very happy.

Hi! It's been awhile since you posted your request, but I wasn't able to answer until after being absolutely sure that what it is I'm working with is a sure cure. I've been peri-menopausal for about 10 years now and I just keep wondering when I can actually say that I'm through menopause. The past couple of years have been the worst; I gained 25 pounds, noticed my personal scent was so strong I couldn't even stand myself. Everything about my body changed and I was really beginning to be uncomfortable around others, no matter how often I would bathe. About 2 months ago, I started a soy-based diet and I've cut out all starches, sugars, and dairy products. Not only have I dropped 20 pounds, I've also noticed that my scent is back to normal...and instead of falling out, my hair has begun to grow again. I'm truly happy and would like nothing more than to share this wonderful diet with all who need help with all the bodily changes we go through during menopausal years.
Feel free to give me a call!

Hi YP
I agree with Sam and April
the chlorophyl is a good source and helps to make the body more alkaline (As oppose to acidic)... additionally, does your sister drink LOTS of water, this will help too.. I find that limiting red meat (not just when premenopausal) but in general helps to eliminate a stronger body odor as does limiting dairy. those two things alone can make your body odor much more pungent. I try and stay away from antiperspirants and they have harsh chemicals in them, hence the water drinking, which goes a long way.. so will the chlorophyl.. you can get that in powder form as well and drink it with water, takes some getting used to it, but it will also help with any mood swings (this is also good for depression) I swear by the stuff. two 16 oz glasses a day for me......... I feel great

I feel for your sister, I've been flashing for almost two years now, it sort of fades away and then rears it's ugly head again. The body odor from the sweating sucks. Odor comes from bacteria, what kills bacteria? Bleach.
After a shower I dilute a little bleach in a small bowl of water, take a cloth and dip it, wring it and then wipe the bleach water on all my areas that get sweaty. I dont have very sensitive skin and can swipe it on full power under my arms provided I havent just shaved them, otherwise it burns a tad. Just add deodorant after the pits dry and you stay odor free all day, works like a charm. I poweder myself at night before bed and that really helps a lot, if I dont have powder on hand I use cornstarch, it also works like a charm.

Going through menopause also affects the sense of smell. Just like the fact that pregnant women or women in certain parts of the menstrual cycle are supersensitive to smell, so too does this happen to women of a certain age. So, get an outside opinion, especially before putting untested supplements in your body and toxic substances on your body. THe research into 'natural' remedies, such as black cohosh and phytoestrogens in things like soybeans, has not been scientifically shown to be different from placebo. FUrther, some of these 'natural' remedies can have effects on bloood pressure, kidneys, etc. Please be cautious.

Hi Y P,

I found that controlling the flashes works wonders for preventing that odor that can arise just as suddenly as the flash does.

I had to have a complete historectomy and I haven't taken any prescription hormones for 10 years. I have been able to control my hormonal needs totally naturally with high quality nutraceutical, herbal, and nutrititional supplements. I believe that if I can do it with no ovaries, anyone can do it at any stage of hormonal imbalance.

I would love to share more about this with you and your sister. You can call me or look up my website in Local Business Reviews. (I distribute the products that work for me--Victorious Living with Symmetry Direct). I'm looking forward to hearing from you soon.
