Looking for Good Quality Receiving Blankets.

I am pregnant with my 3rd child and due any day now. My other two children were born in late winter so I swaddeled them with fleece blankets that had some stretch in them and kept them swaddeled. Since this baby is going to be born in the hot summer I need a lighter blanket to swaddle with. I can't seem to find a light weight blanket or receiving blanket that feels like is has some stretchiness in it to help the baby stay swaddled. Any suggestions?

I found some great, oversized swaddling blankets online at www.AllBabyandMom.com. They are made out of muslin cotton, so they are light weight and perfect for summer. My son was born last summer, and my sister recommended these swaddling blankets. I still use them to this day, because they are big and work as a shade to cover the stroller, etc... They are stretcy as well. AnywAY, I hope this helps.

My son was born two summers ago when we had a super hot summer. We had the same problem. The koala baby brand at Babies R Us is good. Nice light cotton. Look for one that is retangle shaped, not square. I noticed the square blankets un-swattled easy. Congrats on number 3!

My son is 5 weeks and I thought the same thing about swaddling blankets, but then I realized we keep our AC temp between 78-80. What I usually do is keep him in either a onesie or just a diaper and then put him in the Kiddopotamus Swaddle-Me(Babies-R-Us) at night. Even right now he's sleeping next to me swaddled in it. They also come in different fabrics:
http://www.kiddopotamus.com/p_swad.php
When we're out and about I have used the Carter's First Year blanket at Target, it's not flannel-like but cotton-like and it was around $5-6, I got the frogs one. It's the same fabric as the Gymboree blanket, but Gymboree's blanket was like $24.50.

We had the same issue. Our Doula told us the ONLY thing to use was the waffle type blankets. Kinda thermal underwear looking. They are only $5 each in all colors at Babies R Us, which makes them nice and thin and stretchy. Our swaddle lives changed when we switched to these.

Good luck! The first two listed are the ones we used.

The swaddle me's work great, but at $25 a pop!! Not worth it. The Koala brand at Babies r us. are bigger then carters or gerber. They are great. For my 4th my mom just went to the fabric store and bought flannel and made me recieving blankets. She made them really big, and even at 9 months can be swaddled in her swing (never at this age in her bed just incase she flipped over). I think she made them 42" by 42". Do you know anyone crafty?

Have you tried the SwaddleMe swaddle blankets? They are all ready for you to wrap with velcro to hold them together. They came in a light cotton. This is what I use on my infant and this is the only way I can get him to sleep is by swaddling him up. He is 4 months old now and i am trying to break him of needing this to sleep.
They sell them at Babies R' Us for like $10.00.
Hopefully this helps...Good Luck!

Hey Shelly,

My daughter was born in July of last year and she loved to be swaddled! I used the kiddopautumus ones they carry at Babies R Us, they have 2 versions - a light weight and a heavy fleece. I also used the basic swaddle blankets by both Gerber and George that come in a multi-pack. I liked the George ones better because they were a lot bigger. Hope this helps!

I ALSO highly recommend Aden + Anais. You wouldn't believe how soft the blankets get after you wash them a few times and they are HUGE for swaddling and super lightweight. They are also great baby shower gifts so if you don't feel like you need 4 of them, at least you can give a few away as gifts.

Good luck with your new arrival. Mine is due in just over 3 weeks.

We found that the ones we got from the hospital were great for summer swaddling. My second daughter was born in Israel, where you don't get thos hospital blankets, in the middle of summer and we used my older son's.
THe other thing that worked for us- if you can buy the old school cloth diapers (here they're everywhere- used as blankets)- they do nicely for swaddling in the summer.
Congrats on number 3! I'm jealous :)

Hi Shelly,

I used cloth diapers to swaddle my son who was born in the summer time too. I couldn't find anything out there was light enough and when I stumbled onto this, it worked perfectly. It you need it to be longer, just sew two together. The clothe is like gauze so it's lightwweight and it does stretch so it'll be perfect for the summer. And when your baby girl is older, you can use it as burp towels, bathing towels, or even cleaning towels... Hope this helps.

Congrats on your girl. I also have two boys the same age as yours and just got my girl 7 months ago. It's sooo different having a girl. All the fu-fu clothes and not knowing when she's gonna pee : )~ Enjoy!!!

Check out the Swaddle Me blanket, they sell them for $10.00 at Babies R'Us and I believe at Wal Mart as well. They Rock!! I use to swaddle my little one in a blanket and it was so much more difficult, this takes seconds and is stays on. Make sure you get the cotton one, they make a fuzzy one as well that we used in the winter and it would be way to hot. My little one is 7 months old and still can't "break out" of this thing. Just look up swaddle blankets on the Babies R Us website and it comes up. I tried to copy a pic but it would not let me paste it here. Good luck. : )

With both of our daughters (January and June babies) we used the Babies R Us waffle type blankets...they give good stretch and coverage. I can't imagine swaddling them in anything thicker, these are perfect. They come in the standard colors, nothing too exciting, but really are perfect. We are having baby girl #3 in late August and plan on using the same ones.

Personally I really like the Swaddle Me blankets like this one http://www.toysrus.com/product/index.jsp?productId=2265539
They come in thin cotton, flannel or fleece. And they come in a few different sizes (helpful since my son was close to 8 pounds at birth and was 12 pounds by the time he was a month old) And they work really, really well.

I had several of the cotton swaddle mes and they were nice and stretchy. Being able to velcro them really helped too because baby would stay swaddled...

Hi S. -

The Aden & Anais swaddle blankets are the BEST! They are muslin cotton & get that soft waffle-feel after washing. They have the stretch to them that you were asking about & are great for summer. I give them as gifts all the time. We even used two in the winter time for a double swaddle that was almost impossible for our daughter to bust out of. :o) She's one now & I still use them for a light covering at night. You can get them at most baby boutiques, or even search for them on ebay. I received a number of swaddle blankets & ended up using these the most, especially as she grew. They are just so much bigger & better than the rest. I promise!

My mom made some for me, nothing fancy, but then they were big enough and fabric that was right for the season. All she did was cut the fabric and then folded over 1/4" or so (but it doesn't matter how much) and stitched over it to keep it from unraveling. These are still my favorites. The store bought blankets are too short for swaddling my huge kids. If you don't know how to sew I'm sure there is someone who can help--it's a simple non-fuss stitch or there is a glue that you can buy that "hems" things. :) Good luck!

If you sew, or know anyone that sews, buy some material and have it made. One of the best shower presents that I got was blankets that were made for me. My son was born last July so I understand about needing a lightweight blanket. The best part was that the blankets were bigger than your average receiving blanket. There was more than enough material to keep him swaddled as a newborn and it grew with him until 4 months when he didn't need to be swaddled anymore. Plus, if you make your own, you can pick out the type of material that you want.

For both of my babies we used the thermal (waffle-like) receiving blankets. They are stretchy (that's what we liked about them - you get a great, tight swaddle) and they are pretty lightweight. Both of my boys ended up loving these blankets and they now cuddle with them when they sleep (they are 3 and 2 now). I got my favorite ones at JCPenney (best quality) but Wal-Mart also has them sometimes, in fact I just got some there, I think they were Gerber brand. Not as nice of a quality as the others, but more lightweight than the others which might work great for you.
