JFF - How Did You Tell Your Partner/Family That You Were Pregnant?

This is the 2nd month that Justin and I have been trying to get pregnant. I can't test until Monday but hopefully I'm pregnant.

Anyways, I'm bored... And procrastinating doing the dishes.... So out of curiosity, how did you tell your partner/family that you were pregnant?

With Oliver (He was an accident/surprise/birth control failure), I offered to drive the car (Didn't want him to get into an accident) and told him while we were driving to the grocery store. For my family, I just told them.

I want this time to be a little more creative.

I was thinking of calling in to one of Justin's favorite radio show. You know how they do birthday announcements? I was hoping to get them to do a "pregnancy announcement". The problem is, the announcement would be in the morning while Justin was on his way to work. I can't guarantee which of his two favorite stations he would be listening to on that day. If I said something like "Hey, you should listen to KQRS this morning" he would know that something was up.

My other thought was to email him a picture of Oliver wearing a shirt that says 'Soon To Be A Big Brother', email him another picture of me wearing a shirt that says 'Baby On Board', and email him another picture of the positive pregnancy test with a caption that says 'If you have figured it out yet, I'm pregnant'.

Oliver is turning 2 on October 29, so if I am pregnant I was planning to tell my family at his birthday party. If I'm not pregnant now, I could also tell my family at my birthday party late November or at our Christmas celebration. If I am able to share the good news at Oliver's birthday party, I was thinking about wrapping up a 'Soon To Be Big Brother' t-shirt and having him open it with his gifts.

How did you tell your partner/family the good news?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Forgot Something - My SIL just found out that she is pregnant with her 5th child. We are both excited about the idea of being pregnant together. What are some cute ways that we could tell my MIL/her mother and my FIL/her father together? She wants to wait a little bit to tell her parents anyway because my MIL is NOT going to approve of her pregnancy (Her first 3 kids were with her ex-fiance who apparently was not a nice guy (I've never met him) and her 4th child was with her husband who is a great guy but simply doesn't get along with my MIL (Don't blame the guy, she's a hard person to get along with), so my MIL hasn't "approved of" any of my SIL's pregnancies). She just wants to be happy for a while before she tells her mom and her mom ruins it all.

The sad thing is, when Justin and I announced our first pregnancy (After SIL had already had 4 children) we weren't even engaged yet (Had only been dating for a year) and my MIL was perfectly fine with it.

Clever ideas!!

None of ours were planned....so it was kind of weird. I was 19 and in college with the first one. I called my hubby (then bf) and he told me he was busy and could what I needed wait...it couldn't. I told him I took a pregnancy test and the line went silent. Obviously it was positive or I wouldn't have had to call. My mom knew when we went on a trip and the gravy on my meatloaf tasted like a block of cinnamon...or me tossing my cookies in the trashcan because she was taking too long in the bathroom. My mom told my dad and brothers. I had told my little sister first, and my older sister on the phone.

The second one I knew I was pregnant when I made fajitas and couldn't eat one bite. Again, hubby (then fiance) was at work and I called him. He asked if it was an emergency because he was busy, and then I told him the same thing, I took another test. I told my mom over lunch and she told everyone quickly.

The third one I tested and went to my hubby's office. I had JUST started working and didn't want to be pregnant and not stay home with my kids. He was excited! I kept saying the line was so faint that maybe I wasn't pregnant, but he's 5 now and I can't imagine a minute of my life without him. I called my parents and asked if we could take them to dinner, and my mom said "I already know." WHAT?!?! I had JUST tested. So she took the fun out of it.

We stopped at 3 :).

With my son, I knew I was pregnant a few days before I could take a test. He thought I was insane, but bought the test anyway. Needless to say, I couldn't sleep in the morning I was "able" to test, so at 5:30 in the morning... POSITIVE! I ran in and told him. Not creative at all.

So... when we were trying for the second time my husband mentioned on more than one occassion that we would need to finish the basement when baby #2 was on the way. We had an architect draw up the plans, but weren't going to start any renovations until we knew we were pregnant. So, I bought a "Big Brother" shirt when I found one I liked and asked around about a contractor. I didn't say a word to him about my suspicions this time and took a test on a Saturday morning. I put the test (in a ziploc), the Big Brother shirt and the number of the contractor on the kitchen table with the calendar open to my due date with a huge circle around APRIL 16. When he got up and went to pour himself a cup of coffee, he put it together pretty quickly!

I handed my husband a shot of Tequila and said "you're not going to believe this" the first time. The second time, I handed him a shot of Tequila and he said "you can't be serious, again!?" Both were surprises.

We didn't get creative with telling our families and kept both pregnancies to ourselves (20 weeks with one, 17 with the other) because there was other stressful family drama going on.

That said...I love the idea of doing something creative, but caution you to not tell your son or family members until you're in the safety zone of 2nd trimester. So try to do something that doesn't involve your son for telling your husband, and then you can use your son to tell your parents and ILs (a t-shirt announcement etc.).

You won't want mine!!!

Lol... I broke up with him. Gave him his walking papers. If ONLY I hadn't let him convince me to stay. Ah well! 20-20

Although for SOME people, that could work : Im sorry, but the 2 of us just aren't working out. Sigh. We've had a good run. But this is it. The 3 of us cant be together as a family thr way we used to be, but we'll make it work. we'll have to since It's going to be four of us from now on. I hope we can still be friends? Forever? Even when it's 3am and neither of us can sleep?

Some would find that hilarious
Others, it would be cruel.

I asked my husband to check on the "breakfast" I was cooking (we were in a cabin in the woods with his family). He found only a dinner roll and was kind of irritated with me. So I said, "what's that you say? there's a bun in my oven?" We kept the secret between just the two of us the whole rest of the weekend, but it was very funny. And by the way, I hate that expression, but it was fun to do it that way anyway.

With my first we got pregnant after one try so I was so freakin excited I think I pissed myself LOL but after I took the test and it came back positive I ran full tilt into our room and tackled him with the test. With our second we had been trying for quite a few months and testing over and over again and it just seemed like it wasnt gonna happen for us but when it finally did it took all my effort not to say anything - I just left the positive test on the counter for him to find when he took his morning pee
Good Luck

instead of a big brother shirt why dont you make a shirt if you reveal it on his bday that says "my mommy is giving me a sibling for my b-day but I wont see it for xxx mos" or "I get a sibling for X-mas it's cooking right now"
