Is It Normal for a 23 Month Old to Be Grouping Everything?

Hi. Here is my question. My little girl, about to turn 2, is very into categorizing things. I will walk to a place she has played, and been very surprised to see how she has set things up. The other day, she had her little "zoo" animals, and had all the birds in one section, all the zebras grouped together, the alligator and iguana were in their own group, etc. tonight I just saw that near her kitchen, she put all the pots and lids in one area, then all the spoons together, all the forks in another pile, etc. She also is VERY particular about how she organizes. She will put all her rubber duckies, lined up on the tub edge, but they all have to face a certain angle, or she gets irate if you move them. I will say she is very bright and has a ridiculous vocabulary...I just don't know if she is being really smart by categorizing, or if it is kind of strange. Any feedback? Thanks
A. :)

Maybe she is just extremely intelligent! I hope everything is ok, what does her pediatrician say. Good Luck, I wish my almost 23month old was talking more but he is definitely starting to.

Read your own submission. She's just like you! Try to insert a sense of humor, though. May be freehand drawing to loosen up & relax.

Someone might tell you these are signs of an autism syndrome....but it may just be that she is a very smart kid! If you've been following the Michael Savage controversy, this is exactly what it is about. google search Michael Savage and go to his website. He has articles and commentary on the subject. Apparently this syndrome is way over-diagnosed and little geniuses can do this! :) If your dd is interactive with people I wouldn't worry about it.

This really has nothing to do with your daughters grouping, besides that she sounds adorable!!! Her name is SOOO cute!!! I loves stars! My daughter is only a month younger than yours! Just a thought maybe our girls would like to play with eachother!

Hey A., my son is 2 years old going to be 3 next month and he has been doing things like that for a year now, he does all his trucks and cars and trains in a row and his bath tub he does the same to the toys in the tub, and if they were to go out of place he would be screaming lol, He even gets mad at his own toys if they don't do what he "wants" them to do. i have 4 other children and they all did that at that age. I also think they learn that from us when we clean or put things away. Maybe on your next Peditrician appointment mention it to her doctor and see what she thinks. I hope this helps

I was surprised one day to notice that my 2 year old had organized her LeapFrog magnetic alphabet by color... she had grouped all the vowels (red) together and then all the blue, green, yellow letters in separate groups. I first asked my DH if he had done it... NOPE! I think it's natural for children at this stage to try to make sense of what they know and group it accordingly.
Enjoy!

I personally do not think it's anything unusual...........I am sure it's nothing..............If you are really concerned I would ask your pediatrician, but I really do not think it's anything! Relax mama!
