Is It Normal for a 19 Month Old to Hit Their Head on Things?

Hi,

I have a very, very active 19 month old little guy that lately has been slapping his head and hitting his head on things, including me, and it's starting to concern me. I don't know if these are headaches or if it's out of frustration? He's not really talking much yet, just a few words, so he can't actually tell me what's wrong.

I am also wondering if anybody has any suggestion as to how to keep him in his crib? My crib has a changing table attached so the Crib Tent won't work (already tried) but nap and bed times are getting really out of control. I mean I put him in his crib and he is out like 2 minutes later. I'm really not sure what to do anymore.

ETA: Sometimes he will just randomly hit his head against the wall. Tonight he was hitting his head against my leg. Sometimes he will just slap his head. It's really odd and I'm kind of wondering if he does it when he is tired but doesn't want to sleep?
So confused.

What can I do next?

every single child I've known....has gone thru the head-banging stage. It's a pain to watch!

I have seen this happen with non-vocal & very vocal children. My only recommendation would be: please have him assessed by the local school district &/or dr to rule out other issues.

& as for the bed: if he can climb out, then it is time to remove the crib. One slip is all it takes to put him in the hospital. In order for him to learn to stay on his bed, you will need to create your discipline plan. I highly recommend watching the "1-2-3 Magic" video. Been using it for years!

Sadly, yes. I had one who even hit her face against the floor when she was mad. I would pick her up and put her in her crib until her fit was over so she could slam her head on something softer. I often reminded the kids to be soft to their bodies and then I tried to help them use words for their feelings, even if I was doing most of the talking-- they can indicate yes or no.
As far as the crib goes, don't force it anymore. Time for a toddler bed or just a mattress on the floor. Consistency is important, but not vital. If you find yourself getting mad because you are repeatedly putting him back to bed, take a moment to think more flexibly. You may be able to find a motivation he likes to keep him on a good sleep schedule. He wants more freedom but is still too little to handle it on his own. Help him through this frustrating time.
Good luck and God bless!

Lots of kids do the head banging. My oldest dd did it around that age. It doesn't last long, and they are soon onto some other weird behavior.

He is hitting his head because he lacks communication skills at this point. When he does it, there is probably something wrong. Thirsty, hungry, wet, tired, or doesn't feel well. Try talking him through it and see if he can direct you to what he needs, then say it for him as you satisfy the need.

As for the crib, some kids are safer outside of the crib. If he is going to climb, you may as well put him in a bed.

As far as the crib...put the mattress on the floor...if the bottom of the crib is low enough to the ground. That way he can't climb out?? Worth a shot! We are almost to that point because our little guy can hoist his leg over the top of his crib...won't be long! Take everything (bumper, stuffed animals, etc.) out of the crib so he has nothing to step on to hoist himself up.

When is he hitting his head? Is it when he is frustrated? My little guy went through a stage where he would headbutt me - and it was usually when I was carrying him and he didn't want to be carried. Pay attention to WHEN he is doing those behaviors. Our son (21 mo) does it too, if his head bumps the wall while he is on his changing table, he will bump it again on purpose. I think it is because he usually gets a reaction when he bumps it, so he is trying to see what will happen if he does it again. See how much you are reacting when he does it and try to ignore it or re-direct "can you show me your toes?" See what happens then...

Good luck!! :-)
