Are there any moms out there taking their baby to swim lessons? I think my 11 month old would love that, she loves baths and always seems to want to swim. I called the 24 hour gym nearby but they don't have anything like that. Any ideas?

What can I do next?

Hi S.,

My kids are older now, but I wish I would have done the same with them. Its just so much safer to know that they have have a little know-how around the pool and tubs expecially at such a young age. One of my co-workers takes her daughter and has been since she was around 1 year old. It is the cutest thing, but she did tell me initially that she was on a waiting list. I want to say it was at a YMCA, but am not 100% sure. I do know that one parent must be in the pool at all times too. Good luck and I think this is such a great idea. Good family time:)

Hi S.,

I took my daughter for a smim lesson at Houston Swim Club. They have 3 or 4 branches in Houston, Katy, Sugarland, and 59 & Bellaire. My daughter loved to play with water and we filled our bathtub for her to get the feel and she loved it. So I signed up with the Houston Swim Club. We took her to Sugarland. The place was very crowded and has limited number of shower room. My daughter freaked out big time and she cried most of the time in the pool which I totally understand. But she ended up with a cold and ear infection and I don't think she enjoyed the lesson all that much. So I gave up the "swimming lesson" and took her to our community pool instead. I (personnally) will wait until she's 3 before signing her up again.

Hope that helps.

The YMCA has swim classes and there is also a place called Sea Star that is supposed to be good. If you do a google search for swim lessons in Sugar Land, you'll come up with lots of options. I did it with my daughter last summer and she liked it. She was about 18 months old then, but there were younger kids too.

Hi - I started my daughter in swim lessons at 9 months. That was with the Red Cross. I live in central Houston, so there are several good swim schools. Also, call the YMCA. Not sure how early they take, usually about 4 yr. Also, in the summer, I've found swim teachers who want extra income & will teach small classes in a private pool. My son was a year or so when he started. Be prepared for some resistance and even crying or fighting when she has to lie on her back. Be calm, patient, but DO NOT give in. Good luck.

I also wanted to plug Houston Swim Club. The Hwy.59 location has amazing instructors. But as you read, a child can freak out. They (99 % ) will overcome that, and if you're around water, it is necessary to put up with a few tears. It won't be the last time !
