If You Suspect ADD, Do You Recomm. a Neurologist or Psychiatrist for Your Child?

My son is 6 and shows signs of ADD. We took the Connor test and it leans toward attention issues and impulsivity. Would you recommend a neurologist or a psychiatrist? I've got good referrals to both and can't decide which one to go to!

Just as an update - We've been on an all-natural/organic diet since August of 2007. We have ommitted from our diet: HFCS, transfats, synthetic or genetically modified ingredients, artificial ingredients/flavorings/dyes, preservatives, and we've also moved to all-natural organic meats and organic dairy products that come from cows that have not been given any rBGH.

We did submit the Connor test results to our Pedi who recommended a pediatric neurologist BUT I've also heard that there's a significant difference in the way a neur and a psychiatrist may treat my child. I am trying to evaluate the best physician to go to in this case.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Well, it's now November and my son is in 1st grade. I have to tell you, while the neurologist visit was expensive (I use an HSA) it was very educational. I learned all about ADHD which in turn helped us as parents to make our own decisions about our son's treatment. We also learned about all the medication options which he did not recommend for our son until much later and only if it starts to affect his learning and behavior. He gave us an article to give to his teachers to use in class: http://www.oneaddplace.com/articles/adstud.htm

I must also say that at the end of kindergarten, we asked for the most structured teacher for 1st grade and it has made ALL the difference. She is awesome with ideas and techniques to use with our son that won't draw attention to him or make him feel "different" or "bad." I feel that (for our son) structure and repitition has helped and that he is just outgrowing some of his focus and impulsivity issues. He has done much better in his after-school program this year compared to last year, too.

While I support you exploring all of your options, have you considered diet? My son's teacher wanted him to be tested for ADD last year and I held off and decided to work on his diet first. I got him on some good whole food vitamins and cut down on his sugars and white carbs.

There's been some amazing studies on supplements and ADD/ADHD
http://www.pycnogenol.com/media/media_press_releases.php?...

Pycnogenol has been shown to balance stress hormones and can be found in Isotonix OPC-3, an isotonic supplement. You can get a 30 serving size bottle for $28.95 or 90 servings for $67.50 Here is the website where we order ours from: www.marketamerica.com/C.

After changing my son's diet and supplements, his teacher said his behavior has improved significantly and hasn't mentioned another word about getting him tested. Best of luck to you!

I recommend getting an assessment from a Child Psychiatrist. Most Peds did not go to school or train for in their medical residency to manage ADD medications in children. And in my opinion they meddle in a bit of everything and then screw it up. My pediatrician actually ended up harming our 14 yr daughter who is bipolar by putting her on meds he should not even have been trying.
Long story short..we were referred to Dr. Sharlaw Bhargava child psychiaitrist in Frisco. She adjusted the medications to levels and combinations that literally saved my daughter's life. It takes a skilled doctor to do that. That is why I never recommend anyone to let their PCP or ped mess with that. It is always better to go to a good child psychiatrist not even a psychologist or therapist because they can't do medication management. Hope this was helpful/lol.

First as a Early Interventionist that worked with children 0-6yrs, a neurologist was never on the list for my children who had suspected ADD. If you can find a developmental pediatrician, they can help you with true assessments and help with this situation. I am really shocked that it would be suggested that a child see a neurologist for ADD/ADHD when there are so many other specialists that I could possibly name. Continue looking at diet especially those that have been artificially colored.

I would recommend a psychiatrist because my son was seeing a neurologist and it was just a waste of time and when he went to see a psychiatrist, she asked why he was seeing a neurologist and I said the pediatrician recommended it. The neurologist really didn't help with any behavioral issues, like the psychiatrist did. Also have her heart checked before any meds.

I suggest neuropsyc testing and a good neurologist as that is how I found out about my kids' LDs and neuro issues. Physical issues can manifest in many ways. Our psychaitrist is who wanted the workups to begin with.......we have a great neuro and neuropsyc..........hth

We were talked into putting our son on medication when he was in the first grade - the school just wouldn't stop pushing - and I regret it. I don't think he needed the meds, just didn't fit into their "box" of learning. He's been off for years now (in 7th grade) and makes As and Bs. I wish I had know about DORE - an alternative to drugs - way back then. I'd at least check out their center and testing.

Here's their link - http://www.dorecenters.com/events.aspx

There is a location in Grapevine anf the staff are GREAT! They are chamber members with me, so I am aware of their programs. Definitely something to look into. Good Luck!

My son (age 8) was just diagnosed with ADHD and our pediatrician said the Connors test is not a very good indicator for those things, but more of a guideline for the parents to see if they need to further evaluate the issue as schools are NOT allowed (by law) to diagnosis a child with anything. He gave us a more in depth study more geared towards ADHD/ADD and well my son was indeed ADHD..off the chart! He prescribed medication and my son is doing MUCH better in school and his conduct.

Our pediatrician did warn us that there are learning disorders that can mimic ADHD/ADD so it is best to always get them evaluated properly. He had recommended behavior modifications first but when he saw our son's score, he strongly recommended the medication route.

We have not needed a neurologist or psychiatrist for our son's ADHD nor was one even suggested to us.

Praying for you.

J.

Take your Connors to your Pediatrician first and let them help you make your decisions. Good luck!
