I had a simalar issue. My step-son 6years old was wetting the bed at my house and not at his mother's house and told me and my husband that he just did not want to get up. My husband babies him alot and would not punish him in any way. I took him to the dr and she told him that if he wet the bed then he must be sick and would need a shot once a week to cure him. 1 month has passed and not wet sheets. I know it sounds harsh but nothing else worked.

My two boys went through the same thing, and the main reason is that they had a bad experience on the potty. Both had constipation and it actually hurt to go to the bathroom. You may consult with your Doctor, and try changing up his diet. If it's rich in milk - you may want to try either Apple juice or Prune juice.

My reward chart actually helped a lot. They got stickers every time they went pee pee or poopie, and after so long they could trade the stickers in for prizes. :)

Good luck!

H. - gotta love the potty training. I think the pee thing first is very common. What finally did it for my two year old - this is kinda gross - is letting him run around naked. I gave him oatmeal for breakfast - always makes him go - and I knew he had to go poop, but wouldn't on the potty. Before, I would just put a pull up on him so he wouldn't get constipated, but for some reason I didn't feel he would be able to hold it, and I was right....he went on the floor in a corner...gross, I know, but that was the last time. From then on, it's been in the potty. Good luck! N.

H.,
When you think he needs to poop, try giving him something to do while he's on the potty. Both of my kids took longer with that. With our daughter we gave her books to read, and with our son we gave him a flashlight and turned the bathroom lights off. He loved making finger puppets, and just shining it. If you have a TV tray, you could set it up and let him color.
I hope this helps.

My Dr. said to have my daughter clean herself up (with my help to do the final clean up, of course) after she went. This way she would see that it was not a fun or easier way to go and that it takes up time to have to clean up oneself. When it happenend, I just said without any anger in my voice "Oh no! Now you have to clean up yourself because it is so yuckie to have that all over you." Then, I would just have her go in the bathtub and give her a wash cloth, get the water warm and have her do the best she could. I would then follow up and clean the rest up properly!

Hope this helps! Just know that this does not last forever!

Wow, I have the exact same problem. My son is 3 also, and is terrified to go poop in the potty. I have been going crazy, trying to find a solution, but so far nothing has worked. I will be anxious to hear what other Moms have to say to you.
Just wanted you to know you are not the only one!

Take Care!

I am having the same problem with my 3 year old. He's only pooped in the potty a handful of times. I know how you feel frustrated! I watch him like a hawk in the afternoon b/c that is around the time it happens....but he's sneaky and it only takes a few minutes. If you get any good suggestions, could you please forward them on to me at ____@____.com I'd really appreciate it! Thanks!!

I LOVE the story about going to the doctor, who recommended that the child
"must be sick and would need a shot every week." That works well for a 6-year-old who doesn't have any medical conditions. Not sure it's appropriate for a 3 Y.O.

Also a good one: Having the child clean him/herself up. It's all about logical and natural consequences (you poop in your pants, you gotta clean it up or go around feeling yucky!)

Positive reinforcement is always great, too (sticker charts, etc.) Nanny Deb of Nanny 911 does "the potty dance" which kids really love! I had the opportunity to meet her last summer, and she did the dance for us! It was great.
