Ideas for Father's 60Th Bday

If he's into music and is not the kind of person who would enjoy a big party thrown for him, then here's an idea. Find out who his favorite musicians or bands are (if you don't already know), find out when the act will be in town, and get him a pair of good seats to the show.

Throw him a party with a band playing the type of music he likes. We have a "band" party at least once per year. They are great fun. You could invite his band over for a "birthday" jam session complete with friends and family. BBQ, B-day cake etc. That sounds like something he would enjoy. To save $$ you could ask family to bring a dish. Good luck!

I like the recording studio idea too. Another thought...you could have a 60's theme surprise party @ the local watering hole. Have everyone dress 60's style and have a jam session! Have fun!

Put together a music video of his life with pictures and video clips (if you have them) - you could use his music from his band for part of it!

Well, here's something off the wall. How about taking him and his friends to a local recording studio? Austin has several but you look closer to Houston. They prolly have some, too! It isn't that outrageous money wise, though it may be an all day event. I think they might have fun and be flattered. What a kick, eh? Then you will always have his music for the kids/family/those living far away. You could have some sets of him with the band and some solo bits! What do you think?

For my parent's 60th Birthday, my siblings and I rented casino bus from Houston to Louisana- gambling for one day with our family and their friends in 9 years ago. Up to 30 or 40 people. From 10 am till 9 pm. We provided our lunch box as poboys from Antiono's, chips, and drinks on the way there. We gambled and ate our own dinner all day there. We provide chocolate chip cookie cake on the way home with movies in bus.. We all had BLAST time!!! We are thinking about doing that again for my brother's 50th Birthday.

When my dad turned 60, we threw him a surprise party. His 3 siblings were nice enough to drive all the way up here for his party (his friends too). In his lifetime, he had never had a party thrown for him (with the exception of a cake and his family when he was a little kid). ...let alone a suprise party. It was wonderful! Nothing fancy but the surprise was such a gift to him. He is very shy and never admitted it but I know it was very special. The look on his face was a gift to us as well! Enjoy this special time with your father.

Since he has a band and a group of friends, what about something like an informal "roast"? It wouldn't have to be set up like the old Dean Martin style... just good food, good friends, and a few of them tipped off to tell the funny or meaningful stories through his life.

Any kind of food will do. It can even be a surprise party. Once the stories start, the party will take care of itself. You could have lots of pictures there to get some memories started, and get info on the year he was born (top songs, news stories, price of things, etc)

For my Dad's 60th we tried to get 60 people to send him a card. He didn't actually get 60 cards in the end, but got plenty and really appreciated the gesture.

The recording studio idea is a fantastic one. If you buy a block of time it is relatively inexpensive. All musicians want the opportunity to record what they've done and it would be something everyone would treasure afterwards.

No theme necessary. just have a party to celebrate!

For my father's 50th we came up with something a little different. We held a surprise funeral for his youth. We had a friend of our build a 5 ft. casket (especially humorous since my father is 6'7"). We managed to smuggle some important things out of the house and distribute them to his friends that were going to be in attendance. On the night in question a hearse came to the house to pick him up and take him to his "funeral." When he got there all of his friends and family were there holding his mementos from bygone days. His best friend acted as the minister and started things off. My father was sat in a chair next to the coffin and one by one each of his fiends came up and shared a story that they remembered about my father and placed the item in the coffin. Afterward there was the traditional cake and gathering for people to sit around. I learned a lot about my father that night. Most of the stories told were in roast format and it was a great reminder of how colorful my father really is.

You know, it might be fun to get them all together and have them play Guitar Hero, like a bunch of teenagers! Take video of the whole thing. Last Christmas, my nephew was given one of these Guitar Hero games and the Grandfathers were all over it.. Pretty funny..

For my father in law, we had a huge cook out all day long. We invited tons of people and told them to come and go from 11:00 am to 8:00 pm. It was a ton of fun and lots more people ended up showing up since they did not have to stay the whole time.

I love the poker night, idea. I bet his friends would really enjoy it too.

I haven't read all the responses yet but put togehter a scrapbook for him - I recently did that for my husband and everyone enjoyed it. Get pictures from his band friends as well as from your family. He will have that forever!

Ask family members, friends, etc. to write a short story about their favorite memory of him or how they meet him. Put it in a notebook with a photo of that person. Does not have to be formal-they can write it on a cocktail napkin since that is where he spends most of his time (I assumed they play in bars-no offense). Give them a deadline of one week b/4 so you can get it put together!!! I did this for a 50th bday.
