I Need a Garbage Can That Will Keep My Son Out!

I know that this is an odd question, but I have a 15 month old son that likes to throw everything away. And I mean everything. Most recently he threw away my wallet and car keys. Anyway, I have tried garbage cans with lids, and ones that open by stepping on a lever, but nothing seems to keep him out. I don't have a cupboard I could lock a garbage can into so I'm hoping that someone out there has a good tip to help me or knows of a child-proof garbage can.

What can I do next?

hey, I don't know if you found something already since it has been a while since you posted this. my daughter was the same way.. I had to check the garbage hourly to see what she had put in there. What i did was turn the garbage around so that the open part was facing the wall (or a corner if you have one is even better!). My daughter got confused at first, then fustrated because she couldn't open it. Then she just gave up. A couple times she opened it from the side, but it was difficult (where the fustrating come in) so teh who idea of putting things in the garbage wasn't so great anymore. Basically the kids liek the idea of putting things in things. Does you son have a toy box that he can open and put things in? maybe find a small garbage can like the one you have in the kitchen for him to use in the room? I had a small desk garbage can and she was constantly taking it... dumping the paper out and putting her small toys in it. We just bought her one of her own, problem solved. Good luck if you were still having problems!

Hi K.. At Wal-Mart they usually have the kind of trash cans with locking lids. They are a little more expensive than regular trash cans, but they should serve your purpose. Good luck. Best Wishes, T.

I don't know if this will help, but we just put a gate up to the kitchen (where the garbage can is) so my daughter doesn't have access to it unless we're right there with her.

Good luck!

K.,
Hi, I too suffer this fate and have lost pool keys adn SHOES, my son went though a phase where he threw on or ever pair of shoes we owned out. It's funny now but back tehn we were al goingnuts cause we could only find one shoe all the time. I agree withthe gate to the kitchen, we had one and it worked ok for a while, till they just climbed over it, Now I actuallyhave a slider that leads to my back yard and I have to keep my can outside in teh back but right by the door. But it does keep the kids out.

Lots of Luck,
H.

I feel your pain. My garbage has been sitting on my counter since my son was 11 months old and what an eye-sore it is. I guess the only thing you really can do is get a small one that will fit under the sink or put it behind a cabinet. I just think I will be running to the dumpster to empty my trash a million times a day if I do that so I just keep it on the counter :) good luck...I'll be checking the responses you get from other moms :)

I am in the same situation. I found 4 pairs of my daughters brand new socks in the trash can in my 2 year old sons room. I have just come to the conclusion that I have to put the trash somewhere out of reach. The downstairs trash I have placed on the stairs behind a baby gate. That is the only way I can keep him out. Good luck.

Hello K.,

This is the style of garbage can I have been using way before my twins were born. I think I began using this in 1996.

It is awesome and you mount in on the inside of one of your sink doors. Then, you purchase the bags that go with it.

And, you have not already done so, please put those hook things on the doors so your son will not get inside the doors.
