Dear Mommas, Some eves I am so tired, I want to conk out. And I am a SAHM with only with one child and a semi part time job teaching at a local college. :) Yet, I crave some "me" time to unwind and do things for myself (exercise, read, watch TV, photo albums, journalling etc) , so I end up staying up late to give myself this time. (as well as to work a bit).

My question: how much sleep per nite do you momma's get???? Do you also make the trade off between sleep and doing stuff for yourself????

Thanks again. Jilly

I make the trade off about once every two weeks where I stay up past 2am but most night I try to get 7-8hrs otherwise I can be a bit cranky. Also I would rather let some og the tidying/cleaning go for a few days to get some me time in too. Good Luck!

Usually 7-8. My children are in bed by 8 and I lay down anywhere from 9:15 to 10. My oldest son is up usually by 6 so I can't sleep in. I wish I had more "me" time, so when they nap is when I get it or sometimes when they are playing. Usually 15 minutes here and there.

the best "me" time is when the whole house is asleep. ahhhhh peace and quiet! some nights i will stay up late and sacrifice sleep to get in the me time. just can't find it during the day and just can't justify it any other way! 6-7 hours if i'm lucky and there is no way i coudl get up earlier...easy to stay up later and then a strong cup of coffee to get rolling the next day!

I get... about 6-7 hours a night of sleep.
My kids are older, 4 & 8... and they sleep well now. All night.
I am relieved!

But last night... I could not sleep... Husband was irking me and we had a fight... I was so tired of EVERYTHING... and I did not sleep until about 3:00am. I then got "my" things done...and had some great quietude. And even cleaned the house. I then woke up at 6:00am. My usual.
So I only got 3 hours of sleep. Which for me I can still function fine and dandy. I don't need much sleep actually. I am usually a night-hawk...

For 'me' time... you simply tell your Husband what you need and will be doing... give him a head's up ahead of time... and then go and leave the house and do whatever you want. Even if sitting at a Starbucks for hours... just hanging and reading.
It is imperative.... that.... the Husband know.... what "your" plans are too. And that you need time off. And, they can after all, babysit... it is their kid too. Even if we are a SAHM. Which I am. We deserve some time to ourselves. Nothing wrong with that.

My Husband, never bothers with waking up earlier than me to give me a break. The good ol' self-centered man-stereotype-husband. Even on weekends... I am awake in the morning, by 6:00am. My kids.... .wake early. And I hit the ground running....

Or, I simply nap during the day, when my kids nap.
My son naps regularly.

all the best,
Susan

I do make the trade off. I love my sleep, so don't get me wrong, but I love my "me" time as well. Sometimes it's well worth it for me to stay up and enjoy a little quiet time, just to wake up after a few hours of sleep to start the day. Sometimes I nap in the afternoon, most times I don't. Although recently my daughter started to watch an Elmo DVD we barrowed from a friend, so I just zone out during that time. LOL =)
I get anywhere from 3 or 4 hrs to 7 or 8 hrs. Just depends.

My kids are all in bed between 7.30 and 8pm , I then have a couple of hours for "me" by watching TV , reading , or just doing a little tidying up and then I usually go to bed around 10pm and then kids are up around 7am....so I get plenty of sleep and I could not cope with it any other way , I LOVE my sleep and cannot function properly if I don't get enough , how I ever managed with newborns I will never know!!!

Not enough as I sit here at 11pm on Mamapedia.

I basically nap. I crave just sleeping for 4 straight hours. Around here it does not happen with hubby snoring or coughing. He is routinely up by 2am working so I hear him when he tries to be helpful by emptying the dishwasher loudly, listens to some stock market report on the computer, etc.

My body clock has me awake by 3am every morning. I am accumstomed to hubby getting up, getting ready for a 6am flight. Although he does not fly out at 6am as often as he used to, our body clocks are still stuck on 3am.

Sometimes, if I am lucky, I will get a longer nap at night but that is usually because hubby is out of town or I rely on benedryl. Tonight hubby is out of town which means I wll sleep until he texts me aobut 5am. I typically get up around 7 when I hear daughter come down for breakfast.

Goodnight!!

I have a four year old in preschool and a eight week old.
So I go to bed with her anywhere from 11 to 12. Sometimes I stay up until one so I can see my hubby when he gets home from work. She normally gets up anywhere from 5 to 6. And then I have to get my son up at 6:40 to start getting ready for school.
So I guess I could get a little more sleep if I didnt stay up to see my hubby but its a trade off. But I dont always make it Lol, sometimes I pass out.

oh yes! I get less than 7 hrs usually. Which is probably why i get colds lately. Every mom needs her time. Mine is enjoying some tv, reading, or scrapbooking.

Most of the time I get my girls (ages 3 and 11 months) to bed at 7 p.m. So after they are in bed its me time. On the occasion my 3 yr old has a harder time going to bed I end up putting her to bed several times, but usually by 8 she's out at the latest. That gives me 2 hours before I go to bed around 9. They sleep through the night till around 6:30 or 7. I hope to keep this routine up for as long as I can. So I get atleast 8 or 9 hours of sleep a night. which I need to wrestle the kids during the daytime.

Hi Jilly
Sometimes I do stay up for me time,it is now 11.30pm (here in Ireland) and I am on the computer. Also I still have some chores to finish.
I will have to be up at 6.30am, to get my son to daycare and work at 8am so I need to get off the computer soon!lol
I need to have a balance. If I stayed this late every night I would be exausted which then I would turn into an emotional mad woman. I need to go to bed early -10pm a few nights a week (3-4approx) to keep me strong and happy.
Isn't it mad how sleep changes so much once you become a mother-now 7-8hrs sleep feels like such a big ammount.I remember fondly the times of sleeping till midday at weekends before children.lol

i get 7 or 8 most nights, if i fall asleep by 11 then getting up at 7 is great, but if i dont , (which i usually cant), then i make up the time by napping around 8 or 9 to 10 with my baby on the couch after my oldest goes to school.Ive always been comfortable with this amount of sleep. I forego leisure time for myself in order to get the amount of sleep i like. I am VERY active and need my rest.

Hi Jilly,
I also teach part time at a University (Northwood) and I am a SAHM the rest of the week. I also feel so tired at the end of the day and it seems that I never get to do things for me (I love to scrap book and it's been a yr since I have) and some night I have to stay up grading and preparing for class but then I pay for it the next day. If I don't get enough sleep I find I'm less patient or slightly irritable the next day which I don't want to be. Right now I feel llike I need to do what I have to (sleep) to be refreshed to be the loving, patient, fun mom I want to be- when they get older I'll catch up on me time (I will have the rest of my life for that- they are only young once!) I need 8-9 hrs a night but that is me, you may be ok with 7, but I wouldn't get less that that. :)
