How Likely Is It I Could Get Pregnant While Brestfeeding (No Period for 17 Mons)

I am strickly breastfeeding my 7 month old son (4-6 times a day) and haven't had a period since May 2009. How likely is it I could get pregnant? We were using protection but it failed and we are a little worried since we have only planned on having 1 child? I do know it is possible to get pregnant while breastfeeding but because I haven't had a period for 17 months how likely is it really?

Thanks,

What can I do next?

It can happen! My first child was 7 months old, hadn't had a period since I got pregnant with her, was breastfeeding and got pregnant with my second. So yes, it can happen. Don't worry - take the test and go from there. I know you didn't plan on a second, but if it happens, I'm a big believer that it was meant to be. Best wishes.

That's how I got pregnant with number 2. I bought 6 birth control pill packs, hoping to starting trying to get pregnant after they were gone. Never used those pill packs. Got a beautiful girl instead.

Just because you aren't having a period DOES NOT mean you are not ovulating. Don't be a fool. You are a grown up and you know how babies are made! Protect yourself EVERY time. It is always possible. *hugs and prayers for you!*

Very likely, sorry. If you ovulated and had unprotected sex then you definitely could be pregnant. Before you drive yourself crazy or panic--get to the doc for a blood test. If you are not pregnant---definitely get on some birth control or make hubby use something. I normally am a big proponent of fertility awareness methods, but it is tricky when you are breastfeeding.

You do not need to get your period to be ovulating. The way breastfeeding works to prevent pregnancy is the following:

You must be NURSING EXCLUSIVELY (not bottles, no pumping) AND NO MORE THAN EVERY 2 HOURS to have breastfeeding be 98% effective as a birth control. Once that gaps out, you can get preggers :)

FYI - it is completely safe to be breastfeeding and pregnant and to tandem nurse toddlers and infants at the same time :)

Not likely. If you haven't gotten your cycle back and you are still breastfeeding, chances are you aren't ovulating. It does happen, but its a slim chance. Try to relax, you probably aren't pregnant.

You ovulate before you get your period, and as you probably know your period can come back at any time while nursing. So it's possible.

There are birth controls you can use while nursing, if you really plan on not having any more children maybe you should discuss your options with your doctor to save yourself the stress.

According to my friend who is a Board Certified International Lactation Consultant, as long as you are nursing through the night as well, then the chance of ovulation is minimal.

That being said... if you REALLY only want one child, then you should take more permanent steps. Because without something permanent in place anything other then abstinence isn't 100%.

VERY likely! You can definately get pregnant while breastfeeding. It is a myth that you can't.

you'll probably only ovulate once before your period returns... but the question is when it will happen... have you had any changes in discharge?? my period just returned (my baby is 12 months) and two weeks before (when i was ovulating for the first time) i had lots of white sticky mucus discharge in my underwear. yuk. anyway, i suspected it was because my cycle was returning and i was right!

chances are you won't get pregnant, there are only 3-4 days in the next several months until your period returns that you are fertile. so, you're probably not :)

I got pregnant while nursing, it is VERY possible. I had no period either. My kids are 11 months apart.

I am five months pregnant and got this way while exclusively breastfeeding my then 10 month old son. I did know it was possible because I had heard many stories. If you are not planning on more kids, I would quickly find a reliable form of birth control because this isn't it. Good luck whatever the outcome.

Given that your son is only nursing 4-6 times a day your fertility can return at any time. Breastfeeding is only a good bc when you are nursing around the clock. And even then I wouldn't trust it! We always used two non-hormonal forms of bc because I didn't want to be on the pill while nursing.

My husband's ex-wife got pregnant with their second son this way - first son was 5 months old and being breastfed and they thought they were still okay. Boys are 13 months apart in age. So I would be looking into some form of birth control unless you want to take your chances.

I was on the pill and nursing my son and still got pregnant with my daughter. I wasn't on any antibiotic nor did I miss a single pill! It can happen!!Nursing is NOT a reliable source of birth control. Even if you nurse full time, (as I was with my son) you can still ovulate! Good luck!!

I didn't have my period for more than 2 years after my second child was born. And then one day it showed up. I have a friend whose boys are 11 months apart and she was stricly breastfeeding. You just never know! If you're sure you don't want more children maybe get your tubes tied or go on the pill in case you change yoru mind one day.
