Home Depot Carpet Installation. Anyone Else Have Issues?!

In October of 2007, we had our entire home re-carpeted. The Home Depot was running a $199 whole house installation special which is what swayed us in their direction. We purchased the extended 3 year cleaning warranty as well. Within the first year of installation, we used one of our cleanings. We were having company and wanted to make sure all was well. They came, cleaned, Scotchguarded...left. Probably within a few weeks, the carpet began to 'bubble'. It progressively got worse, to a point where it actually peaks in one of the rooms. We called the cleaners to come out this year for our second cleaning and they said they couldn't do it, it would ruin the carpet. He indicated that the carpet was installed improperly and we would have to re-stretch the carpet to the tune of $1000!!!
I went back to the HD and they sent one of the guys from the installation company they use to come and see if it was in fact an improper install. Imagine my surprise when he said it was done correctly! At that point, they had an independent flooring consultant come and take a piece of our carpet to run tests on (we had a small remnant). He said that it isn't a manufacturing issue. The Home Depot has pretty much said that's all they'll do. "It's not our problem, it's yours." is what they told my husband!
The problem I'm having is that the cleaning company is owned by The Home Depot too! Honestly, he could have come and cleaned the carpet and left...not caring about our home at all. But he didn't...AND he said that this was the '3rd or 4th home he's seen this week' with this issue.

Have any of you out there had this problem? If so, was there anything done about it? If there truly are more people out there who've had this happen, it seems to me like something should be done!

What can I do next?

Hi M.,
Sorry to hear about your situation. I'm not sure what they can do now, but you may call Rodenbaugh's and see if they can help you. They installed all our flooring and the installers work for the Rodenbaugh family, most of them have been there for years.
Your carpet will probably have to be restretched, and you will want someone who will back up their work.

First, I'd get more independent estimates of the problem, it's cause and what it would cost to fix it. All your correspondence to all parties should be in writing. Copy the State Attorney General, Better Business Bureau and everyone else that could influence the outcome. I admire that your carpet cleaning guy is trying to do the right thing, hopefully he knows what he is talking about, and be aware that if you name him in your complaints he is likely to lose his contract to do this work for HD. Hope this isn't his only livelihood. You can always call one of the local news channels and have them come out. They seem to get things resolved when no one else can. Otherwise I'd bite the bullet, get it restretched by a reputable company and chalk it up to experience.

I'll apologize from the get go here but .....$199 to install in an entire house????

If I was quoted that on 1 floor alone which has mostly hard woods and tile.. I'd run from that deal. If it sounds to good to be true.... It usually is. Also, never forget that you get what you pay for.

This is a hard an expensive lesson. Hopefully by talkng to HD management, you can come to a good conclusion.

I've had 2 neighbors use HD to install ovens at a " deal" and are very sorry.

It pays in the long run to deal with reputable companies, even if you pay more up front.

Prime example.. We just had a new cooktop installed (Rodenbough's). The company had to cut a little more space from my Corian counters. I would NEVER allow that to be done by someone who does not have years of experience.

Keep flooding HD in paperwork and copies of ALL your correspondence EACH time you contact them. It might take a while but if you never let up, a lot of companies give in and correct the problem .

Good luck.

Have you climbed the ladder at the store? Have you involved the store manager? What is the return policy? I can't imagine that home depot wouldn't correct this problem. Place a complaint with the BBB or any other organization they are a member of. I think every business these days knows the importance of customer satisfaction. Look into it.

Right before we were married, my husband went round and round with Home Depot about flooring. He bought flooring and paid for installation. The floors were delivered. The contractors came and said the floors were too poor of quality to install. So new floors were ordered. Contractors came. Same thing happened. In fact, it happened three times. And the third contractors tore up all the carpet before they decided the flooring couldn't be installed, so he was stuck with a huge mess for weeks. Home Depot finally upgraded the flooring free of charge, but it was a fight. And the whole time we kept wondering...why would Home Depot sell flooring that can't be installed? Aren't they supposed to specialize in this?

We sold that house and now own an older home we are having a wonderful time restoring. And we refuse to contract with Home Depot for anything. Lesson learned, right? That's about all you can do and move on.

Hello,
We didnt have the carpet cleaned. but we are having the same problem
as you are with the carpet peaking and rolls and just looks like a 20 year old carpet. We got it installed a year in half ago . We had two inspectors from HD come out . said its our problem not theres; but never sent us a copy of the report. but when we had our own person. they said this carpet failed and very bad; No one will stretch it or touch it. Due to it failing and wont help it . they offered us $1,200. but now that we have questions and want to work it out. Noone has called us back in about a month. Just leaving messages at HD and no return calls and this just drags out . In the meantime we are looking at this terrible carpet.

We had Home Depot install our carpet upstairs about 2 1/2 years ago and it started bunching up in two places about a year after installation. I didn't call the installation company because my husband got rid of the paperwork, but I have learned that I will never again buy flooring from Home Depot or any other hardware chain store.

We had hardwood floors installed 8 years ago by The Great Indoors and they did not do a very good job. Last year we had a slab leak and needed to replace the wood floors. We used Nadine's Floor Company to replace the floor and they did a fantastic job! When it is time to replace the carpet I will have them do it. I have found that you get what you pay for and cheap installation is not worth it in the long run.

You should check into flooring stores to see about stretching the carpet. I definitely would not have Home Depot or the installation company they use stretch it.
