I suggest stuffing cotton balls up his nose, that way he can only breathe out of his mouth. I use this technique often because of my son's allergies. I hope it helps you as much as it does me!

Cheers, D.

My brother got into a terrible habit of sniffing continually at that age. My mother bribed him, and said if he could stop sniffing for a week, (or ten days, I can't remember, it was a long time ago), then she would give him $20. It worked!

Sometimes the pharmacist will be able to tell you what otc meds are helping people with seasonal allergies in your area. Other than that, ask the doctor. Sniffing is miserable for the sniffer as well as the hearer.

What is working for me right now is nasonex (nasal spray) and actifed. I don't know if kids can use those or not. Zyrtec (popular right now) does nothing for me. In the autumn what works for me is chlortabs.

One non medical idea that sometimes works for me is using a netti-pot. Also, have him blow his nose really well when he starts sniffing and see if that clears it out. Also, he might need an air purifier in his room or for the whole house.

I know this issue from both sides (sniffer and hearer). It's very unpleasant. I hope you find some help for him.

Childrens allergy meds? Maybe Zyrtec or something along those lines. If the does not help (and you need to give it at least 3 or 4 days) then take him to his ped. It may be a sinus issue.

My son has this issue too and he takes Claritin AND Zyrtec. It's always worse in the spring and fall, but even those meds don't fully take care of it.

The doctor wants us to try a netty pot kind of thing with him. I need to pick it up and see if it helps.

dont know if this is cruel and unusual punishment, but it helped me stay sane during the allergy months with my oldest, I stuffed little wads of tissue in her nose. She liked that and it stopped the runnies. She left them alone, she looked ridiculous, but I couldnt give her any more medications than what she was already taking. It helped immensely.Just when you take him somewhere, dont forget he has two big white tissue boogers.

Claritin, Children's sudafed, and the obvious-blowing of the nose ( boys are notoriously bad at this). Good Luck! :)

Zyrtec, Alavert, Claritin, Allegra..... read the labels or ask the pharmacist. If it is really bad, consider seeing the doctor and trying nasonex or another prescription one.

For that, most OTC allergy meds won't work. You need a nasal spray like flonase or nasonex.

My 9 year old takes a Zyrtec before bed most nights. He has seasonal allergies. Is that what's going on with yours maybe?

OTC didn't work for us. He still sniffed constantly and his allergies affected his hearing. The pedi prescribed Nasonex. It's given our kiddo some much needed relief.

Allergy testing to rule in or rule out what the allergy triggers are or if it is truly allergies. Rhinitis does not always mean allergies and avoidance to triggers are very helpful but you have to find out what his triggers are.

I thought the same thing about my son. It finally got to the point where nothing would work. I brought him to an ENT(Ear,Nose&Throat) dr. and low and behold he need to have his tonsils, androids removed and he had to have his sinuses scraped and cleansed!!!!!! One week later and he was "NORMAL". I fought with this from the time he was about 8 months until he was 9.5 yrs. old. It is just wonderful!!!!!
