Hello again everyone. My daughter (1 yesterday), just went for her 1 year shots and checkup. She has had a bump on her tummy, above her bely button for as long as I can remmeber. I brought this to her old peds attention and he said it would close by 1 year of age. Today, I brought it up again at her new PEDs office. She said she doesn't think it is an umbilical hernea (which is the type that would close). She is having my daughter get a sonogram at All children's to determine what it is. Of course, just the thought of going to ACH is starting to freak me out a little bit. I was wondering if anyone else knows about any conditions like this, but mostly if anyone has had this procedure done on their children. Any thing would be helpful. Thanks
Thanks everyone for your positive feedback. Her appointment for the sonogram ended up being the next morning. All children's was WONDERFUL, which I knew. She laid soo still for it, they had all sorts of toys, and a tv for her, and they even had a heating pad on the bed. We got the results on Tuesday, it is a supra umbilical hernia and the doctor has said she wants her to have it surgically repaired. Now we just wait to see when that will be, I think within the next month
My 5 Year old has the same thing and has had it since he was a baby. They keep telling me as long as it stays that size and doesn't get any bigger then they won't do anything about it. The only time you can see his is when he lays on his back, though.
My son too had a lump when he was 3 months old. We were told that the hernia wasn't too serious but it would need to be corrected. The operation took about 30 mins and we found the only distress he encountered was the fact that he couldn't feed for a few hours! Once he was bought back to the ward and had something to eat, he was happy again. We took him home the same day. I hope this helps.

Don't worry, my daughter had a hernia all her life as well. When she was 4 they fixed it. We went to a wonderfull doctor her in Jacksonville & we went to Shands for the surgery. It was a same day surgery. We had it on a Wed & she was back to school the next Monday. Her tummy was a little sore but you know kids they bounce back right away. They gave us a pain medican & she really didn't need it to much. Her's was pretty big. as big as a 50cent piece. They told me that if her hernia didn't go away by the time she was 4 it never would. I had one all my life 30 year till 2 years ago when I had surgery & they went ahead & fixed it anyways.
Sonograms are non-evansive. They just put some jel on the skin and run a transducer over it. A picture, not really clear, of the area inside the skin appears on a black and white screen. I just had a sonogram of my heart and watched it beat. That was an echocardiagram. Sonograms use sound to get data for the computer. They can even make little movies of moving parts of your insides, but hernias probably only have bloodflow.
Good luck. All Children's is a good hospital and probably has the most up to date equiptment, plus their staff is good with children.

i've gone through two hernia sergeries andabout to go through another one with my new child,first they do tests then decide if they will wait to let it heal itself or fix it sergically.if they do it sergically they make an insicionbarely an inch long fix the problem and then seal it back upusually just with the glue stuff they use nowthe procedure itself takes about a half an hour,one took 15 minutes for us,didn't even get enough time to start worrying about it and the doctor came walking out saying it was all done and he was fine.then the recovery takes about 15-1 hour,they just have to drink something and keep it down, the onely thing that's hard about that is they are still groggy from the drugs(tylenol) and don't want to drink.the first time we went in there and he was cryign because he was having a hard time waking up,he drank his cup and we left after 15 min. before he even woke up and when we got home he was jumping on the tranpoline as hyper as ever,and the doctor said thats fine the incision was so smaal that nothing is going to come undone.the second time took longer to leave because he was older and knew what was going on more.this happens to so many kids now a days and they can fix it so quickly an easily it's not that big of a deal sergery.usually it's just the intestines getting stuck in between the stomach mustles so they justgo under the skin sew the mustle together sort of and seal it back up, most of the time that's it and you never have to worry about it again but some times you do.wait for the test results and if it has to happen it has to happen.good luck
I do not have any experience with your daughter's condition. However, I want to calm your fears. My son was born 5 weeks early and spent 10 days at All Childrens NICU. And since then he has had numerous doctor visits, procedures and one surgery at ACH.(He is now 21 months old) Every person we came in contact with at ACH was WONDERFUL. It is very scary to have your child have to undergo any medical procedure and no one can take that feeling away. But the staff and doctors at ACH are very experienced, both in what they do and in making you feel like everything will be OK. Your daughter will be in the best hands there! I hope everything goes better than you expect!
Hi , my son and daughter went there around the ages of four months to have ct scans, they are very nice there, try not to worry about, stay calm......if you are nervous the child can tell, but like i said they are very nice there. C.
Umbilical hernias usually close by about FOUR years of age, not ONE. Even after 4 years, the current thought is that surgery is not indicated. I wouldn't worry about an ultrasound. If this is not a hernia and is truly above the belly button, the probability that this is something bad is unlikely (not a place to get bad things). There is another type of hernia called an epigastric hernia which can occur above the belly button and is usually self limited as well. By no means should your daughter undergo surgery for a hernia at this age. If it is something else (like a lipoma or a benign growth), then there is no rush to having it removed.
