Hi Moms! I need your help again. My 6 1/2 month old is teething, he got his bottom 2 front teeth 2 weeks ago and now seems to be teething again. When he's teething, he seems to have very big poopy diapers. The last couple of days have been up and down, one day no poops and the next day 3 or 4 very big poops, the nurse said that this is normal but is there something I could be doing to not have to poop go everywhere. He's 19.5lbs and 27.5", sitting up on his own and starting to crawl backwards (hasn't quite figured out the forward part yet), he's in size 3 diapers Huggies Brand. Should I try a different diaper? different size? Sorry to be so discriptive but the poop goes up his back, sometimes to his neck and even to his socks, it's all over his clothes so I'm just wondering if anyone has experienced this and if there was anyway to avoid the mess. We're traveling to Chicago in a week so hopefully I can figure something out before the 4 hour flight(I have lots of clothes but hopefully I won't have to use them!) Thanks for all of your help!!!

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thank you so much for all of the wonderful advice. I'm going to buy some of the plastic diapers for the plane for sure and we're going to try a different brand of diapers as soon as we run out of the Huggies. It's so nice to know that this kind of stuff happens to other moms. I just love this site so much. Thank you for all of the help!

When this started happening with both kids I switched to Pampers and Luvs (both made by the same people). I had much better luck and way less poop and pee leaks. Also, go buy some of those plastic diaper covers. They even make plastic covered training underpants that will soak up stuff if it makes it out of the diaper. These all help a ton!!! I could only find them at Kmart. Good luck!!!

The homeopathic Conium in a 30c is great for this! You can get it in a 30c at your local health food store or at CVS. If you want to read about homeopathy, go to www.bluedominoes.com. There is a link to a Homeopathy Overview on the bottom left hand side.

Try the pampers or Luvs they seem to hold more : )
It is natural and it'll pass. My daughter did the same and it can be messy. We switched diaper brands and it helped also.

I have a boy and a girl, and this never happened with my daughter or my friends daughter's, so I don't know if this is a "boy" thing or not, but my son's poop goes up his back sometimes too, when he has a huge pile of stuff.

Anyway, I like the Huggies style (not the regular style) but the "Huggies Supreme Natural Fit" diapers... it has a stretchy waist/tabs that more snuggly fits the child. I've had luck with that, and for using it at night. ( you can see a description of it on amazon.com)

Or yes, for the trip, use plastic water-proof diaper covers, and lots of extra clothing on flight.

Good luck,
Susan

Sounds kind of normal to me. My son went through a period about the same time where the poops were monumental. I think it also corresponded to starting solid foods. I've always used Pampers and have been very pleased. I went to Cruisers once he started crawling. You can also try going up one size too. An important thing to remember to do when you diaper him is to pull out the poopy-catchers around the legs. I just run my finger around to flare them out. As bar as the back is concerned...no advice there except to keep those disposable changing sheets on your changing pad. It saves you from washing the cover constantly. As far as travelling on the plane...take lots of extra diapers and clothes. I always take extra and actually have rarely had to change his diaper/clothes mid-flight. He usually sleeps the majority of the time. I was usually able to get away with changing right before we boarded and right after we landed. (We went to Chicago at 5 1/2 months and Hawaii at 7 1/2 months.) Good luck and have a safe trip!

Oh no! My little one has horrible poops and diaper rash when she is teething. It is awful! I have used Pampers Cruisers since size 3 and knock on wood...we haven't had any blowouts. Huggies didn't seem to hold much for us. I think he is too little for size 4. They seem huge on my girl and she is 22 lbs and 32 inches. Just a thought...are you giving him Motrin or Tylenol? When I do, her poop seems explosive and strange texture/ color. Good luck!

You could get a Gerber plastic diaper cover and put that over his diaper during this phase. They sell them at Target/Babies R us and Walmart. It's what I would use when my kids were leaking urine during the night so there jammies/bedding wouldn't get wet. Note: these diaper covers are over by the cloth prefolds - they are meant to be worn with cloth but work great when the little ones are leaking or when you are potty training (wear over underwear on a car ride, etc..).

Whenever my kids start to leak a lot, that's when I know it's time to move up to the bigger size. My son used to always leak out the back when he had runny poop from teething. But that also coincided with a growth spurt too so it was definitely time to move up a size. We liked Luvs best with him.

My kids would always be right in the middle of the recommended weight listed on the diaper package when it was time to move up to the bigger size.

I think it's a boy thing - I can't remember how many onsies I tossed because I just couldn't deal with it! We found Huggies Supreme to work well. And make sure they are the right fit and on SNUG, but with a little room in the back for expansion. I also packed changing zip-locks; filled with a new outfit, diaper, smaller zip-lock bag with minimum of 10 wipes, latex gloves, and 1-travel clorox disinfectant wipe. Poopy clothes go back in big zip lock, diaper in smaller one and thrown away. My DS did not have sensitive skin, so if the accident was up his back or down his legs, I would first wipe with diaper wipes and then go over with disinfectant wipe (NEVER on bum or p***s). I also carried, separately, a couple of those disposable wash cloths (the ones with the soap in them, I think J&J) and we performed a couple sink baths, especially if we were at an amusement park or traveling.

I found huggies to be leaky as well and switched to pampers. You can also put the plastic diaper covers over for a little more containment. make sure that the diaper size is right, you don't want lots of extra room.

I think that it is about finding a diaper that fits different. We tried a lot just to avoid the poop explosions. The best we found for keeping the poop in its place were the generic Wal-Mart diapers and we tried everything. I think that it is about how the diapers fit your baby, so what works for me may not work for you. However, I will say that we had the worst luck with Huggies. We bought some again the other day because we were out of town and went to a convenience store and that was all they had and she leaked every night that she wore them. I was so happy when that pack was finished!

Go bigger w/ the diapers! When the leaks start that is when i know to go bigger.

I used Huggies too, and tried other diapers when it seemed to poop was always going everywhere. The Pediatrician told me to go down a size, and to make sure to afix the adhesive tightly around the waste. He showed me that I was leaving gaps in the back. This could the be the case? At any rate, it happened with every diaper I tried and finally went back to Huggies and made sure I used the appropriate size and tightly fastened.

Good Luck!
