Help! My Daughter Won't Stop Pulling Out Her Hair!

Has anyone had a problem with their children pulling their hair out? My daughter is pulling her hair out and she has a huge bald spot on her left side. It looks horrible. I've noticed she only does it when she's in bed so either before she falls asleep or when she wakes up or both. I've caught her doing a few times on long car rides also. I have an older daughter and never had this issue. I just don't know what to do to get her to stop. I keep telling her not to do it but she's still so young I'm not sure that she fully understands it.

I'd greatly appreciate any advice anyone may have.

What can I do next?

I ahve an aunt who does this, you really do need to see a doctor,so this doesnt continue into adulthood.

I think I would give that hand something to do like stroking a teddy bear, maybe just putting a sleeping cap on her head at night would help.

My son did this and pulled out every one of his curls. He stopped on his own, but we helped-would move his hand away from his hair if we noticed him doing it. He has never done it since he was 2. He is 8 now.

While it can continue into adulthood, I think it's probably a habit. You can help break it. Help with is, but don't freak out just yet.

My sister is 35 years old and has been going through a lot of stress in her life and has pulled every single strand of hair out of her head in a matter of about 3 months. She is completely bald now and has to wear a wig. She has researched it on the internet and has found an actual name for the disorder. Your child may need to seek medical attention or find something to distract her during those pulling times. My son twists the corner of his pillow as a habit.
Good Luck

It could be something physical. My sister's daughter did this when she was around 7 (mostly in bed) and was finally diagnosed with allergies. Good luck with this and your new baby!

I myself use to have a problem with pulling my eyelashes out when I was a little girl. Although I can't say the exact cause I do know that it was a nervous habit. When I became an adult and moved out on my own the want to pull stopped. Maybe your family has gone through a change that might not seem major to you but traumatic to your daughter. Or she might be looking for attention.

You should take her to the doctor. This can be a problem that can last into adulthood but can be fixed with medication.
