Help for Son's Frequent Urination

Hi, I was looking at other requests, and I thought, well I have one! I am wondering if anyone has experienced their son peeing every five to ten minutes sometimes he won't go for 20 mins or so. It seems to have been a progression, my 4 year old having to go more frequently until we are at this point. He doesn't wet his bed at night, and I think he is only getting up once at night to go...he is very independent. I took him to the dr yesterday and he sent us for a urine analysis. Of course no word yet. He doesn't have pain when he goes and goes just the smallest amount. No fever or anything. Any similar experiences? I am definitely concerned. Thanks for your time!

Blood sugar imbalances can cause this, including diabetes. While you are waiting for the tests to come back, provide him with a diet that is low in sugar and high in protein and fat.

People who pee frequently, even when the cause is diabetes, have success with limiting the amount of sugar they eat and focusing their diets on good fats, protein, fresh fruits and vegetables.

Hi K. I had a little bit of the same experience with my son, and I really hated to respond to this because I don't want to worry you. My mother in law as a matter of fact is the one who approached me she said that my son was going to the bathroom alot, (it was waking him up at night) and he was very thirsty so I made a doctors appointment. Well at the age of 13 he was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes that is why the urination and because he was doing that was making him thirsty. But please don't jump ship yet im just giving you what i thought was a simple fix and ended up being for every.

Hi K.:

My son urinates very frequently, always at school. We learned it was an avoidance technique. He'd go, but not finish, so he'd have to go again and leave class again. Another idea might be that little boys just don't know if they're done or not. They go, see it come out, and think "I'm done, 'cause I went". How they have this control is beyond me, LOL! We used to have to remind my son to make sure he went until he couldnt' get any more out, but you have to be careful that they don't start straining either. I hope his tests come back fine!

Our youngest daughter's pre-school teacher told us that she was going far more often than than the other children. We realized this was just a habit. To break the habit we told her to come to us when she had to go and we would watch the clock and she would do her little dance for 60 seconds and if she could hold it for 1 minute, we would give her a reward. We didn't like to have candy around so we used a nickel each time(this was quite a while ago). You could also us a couple M&Ms or something else they like. The next day it went to 2 minutes, then 3, then 5, 10, 15. When we got to 20 minutes, we found that she would go off and play for an hour or two and forget all about it. In less than 2 weeks the problem was solved for a couple dollars.

They found a Doctor who wold listen and it turns out she has reflux of the kidneys and is now havinf a procedure done tocure the problem. I guess a lot of kids are born with this andis getting more common. So hope the results come back with positive news. And maybe check into this.

My son, who is 7 years now, got the similar symptoms as your sons several months ago. He wanted to go around 4-5 times every hour. No fever and no pain. We took him to see doctor. The urin sample was negative. The doctor sugested to let my boy hold a little longer until he had to go. It took about a couple months. Now he is very well. Hopfully my son's experience will help to you.

K.,
My 5 year old went throught the exact same thing several months ago. I could not figure it out, he wasn't drinking too much and when he did go it was just a sprinkle. Also, it wasn't a problem at school either. He was waking at night which is abnormal for him. His urine analysis was negative but his doc put him on an antibiotic just in case based on the symptoms. Guess what?? It went away and was worth fighting with him to take the antibiotics. He was at the point where he was in the bathroom every 5 mins even at a birthday party. good luck with it.

Sounds like they took the first correct step, ruling out a urinary tract infection but frequent urination could be a sign of diabetes in children. If they tell you the urine test is normal, I would insist on having him tested for that as well.
Good luck.

We have never had that problem at our house, but my nephew has. He was the same age and my mother in law was so concerned because the same thing kept happening to him. They all thought he had a bladder infection. That was negative and it continued. They eventually found out that he was constipated. He was pooping, but not all of it, so it was pushing on his bladder making him feel like he had to pee. The dr had to prescribe something at first, but now he just has extra fiber in his diet and no more problems.

When my son was 4 he also had to go to the bathroom a lot. When he went in for his check up the Dr. said that his blatter was just small and that as he gets older he won't have to go as much (he also had the urination test done, came back fine). He is now 5 and although he still goes more than the average 5 year old, it isn't as often as it used to be. Hang in there! I know it's hard not to think that it could be something more serious.

IANAD (I am not a doctor), but it sounds like he is experiencing anxiety. He may not have more stress than his brothers do, but he might be naturally more sensitive to stress than they are and he may need a little guidance on how to relax. All kids have stress. The only difference is how they deal with it. A person who could help you teach him how to relax better is a clinical psychologist. This is where I would look for more help if I were you. The boy certainly sounds anxious. All kids are different, and it is confusing for parents when one is so different from the others. It's not your fault, I think you sound like a very nurturing mother who is doing a great job with her kids. I wish you luck, I hope the lab test results you are waiting for show there is nothing wrong going on like an infection or anything. But I would check with a psychologist who specializes in treating children. Who knows? Maybe it is one very little issue that you hadn't thought of and all you had to do was ask.

My 3.5 yr old just went through this. We took him to the dr. and they couldn't find anything wrong. Then I read about Pollakiuria. This is what it is: Mostly affects children between the age of 3-8 years, and causes frequent daytime urination, sometimes up to 10-30 times a day, usually with very small amounts of urine being produced at each time. Children with pollakiuria usually do not have other symptoms, and it is not known what causes it, although it may be linked to stress. No treatment is necessary and symptoms usually go away after about 3 months. It is also called Extraordinary Daytime Urinary Frequency Syndrome.

We never verified this with a dr but it fit exactly what was going on. I think his "stress" was getting used to having a new baby brother. My son's symptoms have subsided the past month. We learned not to make a big deal about it and not ask a lot of questions when he had to go so often and that seemed to help. But during this we were really worried, so I know what you're going through. I hope this helps. Good luck!

My son did that earlier this year--he's also 4 years old. Apparently this is not uncommon in boys of this age. My son did the frequent urination thing for a couple of weeks (which really made me crazy after a while) but then he stopped. We encouraged him to wait a little bit when he said he needed to go right away after just using the bathroom and he was (eventually) able to spread out the time between bathroom trips.

Good luck!

I had the same experience when I was younger and to this day sometimes. I was always on the brink of bladder infection. I found if I did not drink much through out the day this would happen. Now I make sure I drink more and I don't have this problem. Good luck hope it helps.

Hi K.,
you certainly did the right thing by taking him to the dr. My youngest had somewhat of the same issue. She loved drinking a lot of water. She was pretty healthy. She was tested for Diabetes, but fortunately had no major health problems. I am a pro - alternative meds and natural healing mom. It turned out that my daughter wasn't totally emptying her bladder. She was so excited, all the time, to do whatever it was that she was doing, that she was going a little bit, getting back to what she was doing, going a little more, and back and forth. Some of this behavior was due to wanting more attention than her younger nieces and showing that she was a "big girl", not a baby anymore like her nieces. It was almost comical to see her do that. She was 8 at the time.
I am a mother of 3 and grandmother of 5. Sometmes children are smarter than we know. They have their own unique way of getting our attention. I pray all is well with your son as it was and still is with my youngest. Take care and God bless.
