My 5 year old son has ADHD, and seems scared of the toilet. I have tried letting him have a special toy only for those times, but he still freezes up and won't do anything. have tried the reward thing, to no avail. HELP!! I'm about to pull my hair out!!! DSS and everyone is involved in this, and i'm still having no luck! He does good in daycare, or at least better than home, but when he's home, he goes in his pants or floor. Any advice is GREATLY appreciated. Thanks, A.

So What Happened?

Well, I checked with the daycare that the kids go to, and his teacher said that he poops in his underwear there too. She can't get him to sit on potty either. I'm thinking about getting him some behavioral therapy. Maybe that will help. Will let you know as soon as I know. Thanks, A.

Hi, I am J.. I have a son who just turned 7 in Jan. He also has ADHD, anxiety disorder and sensory intergration dysfunction. I did not have trouble with potty training...he was 2years 9 months. The only thing I can think of his he anxious more at home? (you said he does better at school).
I did have to take my son to the pediatrician b/c he would occassionally leak some of his BM into his underwear at home or school. The Dr. told me he had no control of this and when he was constipated some would leak out. They gave me medicine to mix in his juice when he became constipated. With my son's potty training we did lots of praise and small treat but not punishing or negative stuff when he did have accidents. The peeing was only 2 days but BM took about two weeks before really trained. Hope this helped

A....why is DSS involved with your kiddo with potty training? I had major issues with PT my 4.5 y/o. I did find that at school they had him on a potty schedule. So I did do that at home. I also got rid of the pullups altogether. Don't make a big deal over him wetting himself or pooping. Just use a calm voice and change him, and see if not showing him a big deal will help.

If he is wearing pull-ups get rid of them completely. Put him in big boy underwear. You can put the vinyl training pants over them to help protect your furniture. Plan to stay home for a few days. When he makes a mess, he has to help clean it up (poop too!). Once he sees how messy and yucky he is may change his mind. good luck.

Have you tried letting your son watch you or his dad go to the bathroom. He doesn't have to see everything, but he can hear you going potty! Let him see that everyone goes potty. I have also heard of other parents letting their children run around naked so they don't have clothes to get in the way of the potty. Also, we had some luck with a small piece of candy as a reward. Make it a party and praise him even when he just sits on the potty! Above all - stay calm! I know it can be frustrating, but he should eventually get it!
