Giving Your Child Dairy Products Before 1 Yrs Old

My mom suggested giving my 7 month old cottage cheese as a snack, like putting a glob of it on his highchair and letting him try to eat it himself. She said I used to love it at that age but I'm concerned about introducing dairy products this early. Will it upset his stomach? He has had milk based formula and has tolerated that well. Also when did you give your child teething biscuits and those puff cereals? I'm concerned about choking since my son has no teeth. Any advice appreciated. Thanks ladies!!

What can I do next?

I would wait on the cottage cheese for a while, but you should be okay with the puff cereals and cherios. They disolve so fast that they can't really choke on them. My son (turning 3 years on sunday) ate those before he had any teeth. He also had teething toast before he had any teeth. It just sort of turns to mush...it's too big for them to swallow hole (or even get the entire thing in their mouth). I would definately have some wipes or wet wash cloth handy with the teething toast though. It gets pretty mushy, but it should be fine. Good luck!

There are some great books out there about feeding babies (and probably some great articles online as well). A book I would highly recommend is: Super Baby Food by Ruth Yaron. This book has great information on when and what to feed babies. It was and is an invaluable source for feeding my son who is now 3. I still use it since it has recipes for older children, crafts, party ideas, nutritional information on tons of different foods, and on and on! Good luck! :)

Its not really a question about age, of course you should use your best judgement, its really about is your child ready. If you find your son is hungry still after feeding formula then you may want to consider supplementing him with some more solid foods like baby cereal, yogert drinks, and other well desolving food items. As far as your question for choking, there is a product I beleive is sold at Babies R US, it is a little mesh baggie with a handel. You put the desolvable food inside and let your baby suck and chew on the entire thing, allowing for peices that break off not to get into his mouth. people also use this for peices of popcycles, banannas, straberries. Of course with all foods, watch your son closely for any reactions to any foods. Aways try and keep new food introduction to one type per day so you can tell what gave a reaction, if any. Please note that I am not a health profesional, and just giving advise from my own experiances and what others have told me. I hope this helps. Oh, and my last daughter was a little piglet she would steal food off others plates around the same age as your son now. So every child is different.

i started my frist son on the puffs and teething biscuits at about six months. I would hold off until your son is closer to a year before doing the cottage cheese/ dairy i didnt wait until he was exactly one but i think he was more like ten or eleven months beofre i gave him a taste. My second son is turning six months tomrrow and i am going to start him on puffs soon. They melt in there mouths so it cant really hurt him and if he is already doing the solids it should be fine!! good luck.
