Frisco Speech And/or PPCD Program

My son, 33months, may be eligible for the Frisco ISD PPCD (probably at Riddle elementary) program. He is speech/cognitive delayed.

Are there Moms out there with who have been or are in the program with a child with similar abilities?
ANY feedback on the program would be appreciated. What is the impact of being in the FISD program as opposed to a private one? Besides the major financial difference.

Please share your experiences and advice.

Thanks for all the wonderful advice, Moms!
I have my son enrolled in the Callier program right now. And based on meeting the wonderful teachers at the PPCD program plan to enroll him once he reached the age in a couple months. Thanks again.

Hi S.,
I taught PPCD for three years and the program, if taught by a dedicated teacher, is wonderful. Each child will progress at his/her own rate, however being put into a structured and stimulating environment so young really can make a difference. The main key is working with the special ed staff together on your child's needs.

Best Wishes,
K.

I am not familiar with the Frisco ISD program, but am a speech-language pathologist in private practice out of Allen. I take many insurance plans and would be happy to talk to you if you'd like. You can reach me at (214) 763 - 8911.

As a special ed teacher, the best thing you can do for your child is to work with him at home. I am not familiar with that program, but I'm sure it's a good one. Just work with his teacher and work with him at home.

I have a child in the Allen ppcd program and love it. My daughter has made significant progress in her speech just since January.

However, I have recently talked with a mom with 2 sons that qualified for the Frisco program. She sent one but not the other. The reason she didn't send one of them is because that particular program didn't offer one on one speech therapy, only group therapy. Her son needed one on one therapy and alot of it because of his specific speech problems. But her other son did not.

If you already know what your child needs just make sure the program offers it. If they do, you will probably be very happy with them. When I was doing my research, I learned that most private therapists don't have anything but good things to say about the school district programs and therapists. And it's free. But if you don't know what your child needs, you could have a separate evaluation from a private source to make sure that both sources line up with what they think your child needs. I did this and it gave me real peace of mind when I had to make the final decision on where to put my child.

Please do it! My son Gavin is autisic and was in FISD PPCD. They are great. He still can't talk yet but he has made a 100% turn around. Hope you go for it.

Hi S.,

My son went for a year when he was 3 to the PISD program. Before he started he spoke about 3 words. I was disappointed with the progress they were making at the school. He was in a class with about 5-6 other kids for 2 hours twice a week. They guaranteed 1/2 hour a week one on one time. What I found was that they spent very little time addressing his concerns.... they had a lesson plan and stuck to it. So for the sounds he already knew, he has to still do them again. I ended up hiring a private SLP to come to our home once a week. She explained things a whole lot better about what she was trying to get him to do, gave us exercises to do all week, and I think was better focused. Now of course you have to pay for that. I will say though, that PISD told me that my son was the first kid they had that had finished in just one school year.... they were amazed. To me that was a big part of the problem - their attitude was they had years to fix it, whereas mine was fix it as fast as you can before it starts affecting other things. Now of course, my experience was with PISD. I have no idea about Frisco, but I would be careful and critical of what they are doing.
