Hi,
We just moved here from KC and my son was involved in an excellent pre-k within an elementary school that is designed to help special needs kids by providing things such as speech therapy, ot, etc. We're in an apt in Farmer's Branch for the time being and trying to decide on what area to live in that is within reasonable commuting distance to the DFW airport. I have a 4 year old son that has an IEP and I would like to get him back into school ASAP so he can continue progressing in his delayed areas-anyone have suggestions on what area/schools are good?? We seem to be leaning toward the North Richland Hills, Fort Worth or Arlington areas....Thanks in advance for any help!!!

What can I do next?

My daughter, who is 3, also has special needs and is in PPCD (Preschool Program for Children with Disabilities) 5 days a week through Coppell ISD - which is right next door to Farmers Branch. She started this fall and receives OT once a week and speech therapy twice a week while attending school. We've been very pleased with everyone we've met in connection with the school district and have seen her make steady progress. If you have questions about CISD's program, you can contact Lisa Montgomery at ###-###-####. Good luck - I'm sure you'll find the program that's right for your special one. :o)

Hi there,
A family I work with (that has a son with Autism) put their son in Vanguard at the beginning of the year

Also, I would contact your school district (you would be in Carrollton-Farmers Branch ISD I believe) and talk to them about getting your son started in therapies and stuff. If you already had your son enrolled in a program through the school district you previously lived in, you may be eligible for a transfer into CFBISD's program

Hello J.,

I do not know anything about the special ed. departments in those cities - but Plano, and Lewisville have very strong special ed. departments.

You should be able to continue your IEP without a glitch. As soon as you select a school, they should do a quick IEP meeting to enroll you, and your child should be able to start the next day. Plano, actually has three special schools that are just PPCD (Preschool Program for Children with Disabilites) - although they may also house a few other preschool and pre-K programs.

Good Luck - and welcome to the Metroplex!

I would agree with everyone that you should contact the school district that supports where you are now and your son should be able to start right away. Then you can worry about where you want to live long-term without feeling like you need to rush it.

It's my perception that you should be able to leave him where he is until the end of the year and then next year you can move him to the school in your new neighborhood -- if that's how you want to handle it. You probably would even be able to transfer him in the middle of the year if you wanted to and if you thought he could handle that much change.

Good luck.
