Found Out I Was Pregnant Last Sunday....

And I woke up bleeding a lot this morning. I am guessing that this is a miscarriage, but I am feeling unsure what to do. Do I need to go to the emergency room to make sure this isn't an ectopic pregnancy? Do I just let nature take its course? I am cramping an awful lot, and have a horrible headache, and if I hadn't done the pregnancy test last weekend, I would think that my period had finally come, really late. Do I go to the Dr. or wait this out at home?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thank you everyone for all your kind words. It has been a long, emotional, hormonal roller coaster of a week. After my third doctors visit today, they were able to determine that my HcG levels had been dropping, and now are almost to zero, which indicates a 'normal' miscarriage. I am glad that I don't seem to physically be in danger, but am sad to experience this loss.

No need to go to the ER unless your bleeding is causing you to soak (end to end of the pad) more than 1 pad per hour, or 1 pad and hour for 6 hours or more. If your pain is severe, by all means seek medical attention. If it is mild to moderate, you may take up to 800mg ibuprofen every 8 hours for a couple days. The ER is generally not helpful for miscarriage. Please call your Dr. for appointment Monday. It is possible to bleed very heavily and still have a viable pregnancy. Only lab work and ultrasound can differentiate a miscarriage from a viable pregnancy next week. I'm so very sorry for your discomfort and sadness. Please call a trusted family member or friend or lean on your husband during this difficult time. Nurse Midwife Mom

It's better to be safe and go to the doctor than to not go to the doctor and and make yourself even worse by not going.

GO!

I had three early miscarriages. The first I had light but persistent bleeding and I just went to my scheduled check-up. The second came with cramping and heavier bleeding, and I just let nature take its course. It cleared within three days. I never saw a doctor. The third was a positive test one day, and a normal period two days later. No doctor.

If the cramping, bleeding, and headache are worse than a typical period, I would call your doctor. No need for an emergency room unless you are losing a significant amount of blood.

The best thing would be to get it checked out..... the cramping could indicate ectopic, but even if it is a standard miscarriage (I'm sorry if that is the case), you may still need someone to check and see that things are ok.

It would be much better to be safe and get it checked out.

I'm sorry you're going through this. In my experience, the doctor has told me there's nothing they can do to stop it, and that it's not necessary to come in unless the bleeding is heavy (soaking through more than one pad in an hour) or the pain is severe. Again, I'm sorry--it's a terrible thing to go through.

I'm sorry. It might be a miscarriage. It might not be.
IF it is--there's nothing that can be done to stop it.
If I was in your shoes (and I have been in them,3 times) I would put in a call to my doc on call & at least talk to them to ask what they think is the best action for now.
I;m sorry you're dealing with this. Sooooo very tough.....:(

I'm so sorry. I'm assuming you're around 6 weeks? I had an early miscarriage around that time but I didn't see a doctor. It was just like a period. I did take another pregnancy test which tested negative. I would go to the doctor if you're bleeding excessively (I think they say a pad an hour) or if you show any signs of infection, such as fever. They may want to moniter your levels to zero depending how far along but I didn't have it done with the early one.

I would call your doctor, they should have a 24hr hotline to contact, I would not panic, my understanding is you CAN spot and still be fine in the begining of a pregnancy, you can still bleed normally (period normal). Do you assume a miscarriage to assume the worst or do you have a history of miscarriages personally or in your family? Honestly, I would not stress too much until you have contacted a medical professional. If your doc does not have a 24hr hotline, go to an urgent care or family planning center to be seen today or follow your doctor's instructions.

Having been in your shoes twice, the ER is about useless. There is nothing they can do and like any OB exam it's invasive. If the pain is severe or like someone else mentioned you are bleeding excessively, go in but otherwise you will be fine, and much more comfortable more than likely, at home.

I would absolutely contact your doctor. With my third pregnancy I was bleeding, although not extremely heavy. I assumed I was having a miscarriage, but it was an ectopic pregnancy. After the surgery, the doctor told my husband that if they would have waited until morning I would have died from internal bleeding. I know this sounds dramatic, but it is certainly worth a doctor's visit to confirm everything.

Go in and get checked out. The same thing happened when I was about 5 weeks along with my third child. Turned out ok, but it was scary!! Good luck to you, honey.
