I saw on a food show the other day that adding flax seed is good for you. Does anyone know where I can get ground flaxseed in Germany? We are stationed in Vilseck. It must be ground so I can hide it in the food I make for my kids.
Thanks,
T.

Hi,

I am in Bamberg, Germany. Last week I was in the Heidelberg commissary and bought some ground flaxseed. It is a one pound bag, I don't remember how much I paid for it. I haven't seen it anywhere else. Hope this helps.

If you have a farmers market there, you can buy it from them and ask them to grind it for you. Additionally, you could buy a coffee grinder and grind it yourself. I haven't seen it ground in the stores. but then I haven't been looking either. I live in Munich and I purchased the whole seeds at Tenglemann's.

Hope that helps,

J.

The commissary's carry ground flaxseed. It is generally in the baking goods row with the specialty flour. I believe the brand is Hodgson Mill and it is in a brown box. If they don't have it you can also request that they carry it.

If you ever want need to find flax seed on the economy, in German it is called "Flachssamen" and you can find it in any german food market, drugstores "DM Markt" or in health food stores such as "Alnatura" and\or "Füllhorn". Last time I looked and bought a 500 gram package it cost me only 1.50 to 2.00 Euro

Good luck! :)

T.,

I buy Hodgson Mill milled flax seed at our commissary here at Yongsan Army Garrison in Korea- it's near the baking section. If they don't have it at your commissary, ask if they will order it for you. I also buy whole flaxseed online and grind it (ground flax seed is more nutritious than whole flax seed) in a $10 coffee grinder I bought at the PX. It has a mild, slightly sweet taste, so your children shouldn't mind it. I keep some in a shaker, and sprinkle it on salads and cereal. I add it to spaghetti sauce, soups, and other foods. I also put it in smoothies, and you can't even taste it.
You can find both flaxseed and ground flaxseed online for less than $3 for a 1 lb. bag. I've ordered it from www.blessedherbs.com and www.bobsredmill.com.

Best wishes,
J. J.

Hi T.! We are stationed in Yokosuka Japan and in our Fleet Rec center they sell it along with all the other suppliments. If you don't have that option you can go to Luckyvitamins.com and order it there. They ship to Fpo addresses and they are great. They also have a ton of other suppliments and nutrition bars if you are interested.

Good luck

I saw flaxseed in the commissary before and bought it there . But you could always find it in the " ALNATURA" chain, it is lke a wholefoods as well as " FUELLHORN" same type of company. Or you can ask in the " REFORMHAUS" , they carry all types of these items. Just look it up in the phonebook. I am not familiar with Vilseck, we are in Heidelberg.
if you don't find it, I could buy and send you some. But try those first. Also you can make a special order in the commissary.
Hope this helps.

We have milled flax seed at our comissary in Naples. SO check and see if your Comissary will order it for you! I think the brand is Hodgeson Mills. When my toddler would eat nothing but Mac and Cheese...I would mix it in. She thought it was chocolate sprinkles......I didn't argue :)

I live in Heidelberg and a lot of the German stores here sell flaxseed, unfortunately it's not ground, but you can do it yourself with a mortar and pestle. Our commissary carries it, but it's not in an obvious spot. There is a small section of whole grain items such as pasta and cake mixes on our cereal aisle, and that's where we find the flax-seed. If your commissary doesn't carry a certain item but another commissary in Germany does, then you can do a special order to get it, they should be able to help you at the customer service window. I know I wasn't a ton of help, but I hope I helped some!

They sell it at the commissary. I think it's in the baking aisle with the flour, sugar, cake mixes, etc. Doesn't really add any extra taste so you can mix it with anything.

should be in your commissary! In Sig it's right next to the specialty and organic flours, on the bottom shelf. It's in a brown cardboard box and labeled "ground flax seed meal". You can substitute flax for egg or oil in many recipes, and I add it to granola and bread crumbs (for breading chicken or fish) and pancakes etc. Definitely worth the purchase. Should keep for months if you refrigerate it (will go rancid in the cupboard).

T.,

Just another option - my understanding is Flax seed is good because of the Omega 3. I now give my boys Omega 3 supplements (they are chewable, taste good, and natural). We use LiL Critters Omega 3 Gummy Fish. The boys consider them a "treat" they are so good. Sometimes I sneak a couple too.

Anyway, I like them because I know they are getting Omega 3 everyday, even if I haven't found a place to sprinkle some Flaxseed.

Good luck,

A.

T., I buy it at the commissary here at Vogelweh, Ramstein and the tiny Sembach commissary. It is by the breakfast cereal isle where all the cooked cereals are but you may also find it near the flour. It is in a box already ground. If your commissary doesn't carry it put in a request, they are usually good about this.

The commissary sell it near the pancakes, but you can always but it in many forms from seller like puritanspride.com. It somes in softgels, liquid, whole seeds, and ground meal. The commissary sells both whole seed form and ground meal. Once you open it you should store it in a ziplock bag and keep it in the fridge to maintain freshness longer.
Flax is an excellent omega 3 fatty acid and fiber boost to your diet. It can help lower blood pressure, but if you are going to be having a surgery of any kind, stop taking it about a week before since it can thin the blood a little. (hence the cardio benefits). Good luck! I take flax softgels and add it to oatmeal and stuff, its great!

I am not sure where you can get flaxseed there, since I live in Guam, but flaxseed is not as good for you unless you grind it fresh. I would suggest getting an inexpensive coffee grinder and getting the whole seeds, then grinding them yourself. It will be more nutritious that way. Good luck!

Yes, the commissary should have it. If it's whole, you can grind it yourself in a coffee grinder or blender. I have done that before. You definitely have to grind it anyway or else your body will just pass it through with absorbing it.

I'm in the UK, and am able to buy ground flax seed at the commissary. It's in the baking aisle above the flour. If your commissary doesn't have it, you might be able to request they get it. I have tried to grind whole flax seed before and my kitchen aid food processor and black and decker mini food processor just couldn't do the job so I definately recommend buying it ground. My mom has a black and decker mini food processor that works though. If I remember correctly, flax seed needs to ground to obtain most of it's benefits.

Flaxseed is awesome, healthy and can be easily hidden in mashed potatoes, pancakes, ice cream toppings, etc. We use flaxseed too in all of our recipes and the kids have no clue. They just think our cooking is great!

We buy flaxseed at our commissary. If there isn't one by you, you could try ordering from www.kingarthurflour.com. They ship to APO's.

Good luck!

Hello, have you tried the Commissary...I think ususally its around the dry goods, probably where the oatmeal/pancake mix items are at...

Also, if you talk to the store manager, you can special order it through the commissary.

If nothing else, shop online at a health food store (that will ship APO)

Hope this helps...
