Hi, I heard on Oprah about how flax seed is good for you. I picked up some at the store the other day and was wondering how to take it. It looks like sesame seeds. Do I just sprinkle on food, eat a hand full or what. How much a day should I be eating?
Thanks in advance,
N.

So What Happened?

Thanks everyone for your responses, without asking I would have never known to grind the flax seed in order for it to work properly in my body! I love this website!

it is great for you high in fiber and omega three's! BUT, for your body to process it it must be milled. they sell it milled but it sounds like you hae the whole seeds. Maybe you can grind it in a food processor? then yes it can be added to anything, cereal, yogurt, smoothies.. it can be used as a fat substitute in recipes (i havent been brave enough to try it yet in recipes) Enjoy!

Hi,
You're right, they're very good for you.
You need to grind it to get the "goodies" as whole they'll just go thru your system.
It's best to eat them freshly ground. I put mine in the coffee grinder, and it works great. My kids love it sprinkled onto their yogurt, or you can add it to whatever you like, even a shake. Eat as much as you like. I try to get about a tbs down them if they're willing.

The only way you will get any of the nutititional value in flax seeds is if you grind it. This is because of the hull or outer shell. I just buy flax meal and put it in cereal, yogurt, oatmeal, smoothies, any baking, in the kids mac and cheese etc. You can put it in just about anything.

Hi!

Our bodies cannot digest flax seeds....they must be ground or milled...you can do this with a coffee grinder or buy them already milled. Then I would suggest adding them to foods like milkshakes or smoothies or mix them in with bread crumbs when you are using breading. Youc an also find some really good flaxseed bread receipes online!
