My husband lost his job. We filed for unemployment and were denied. He got a temp job, which is over this week. His next job starts Jan 2. His first paycheck is Jan 12. We can't pay rent this month or next because our bank account is overdrawn. We have no credit cards and we were denied a loan. We've exhausted all our resources! I honestly don't know what else we can do.

What can I do next?

One of my co-workers church helps people of any religion. It's called the samaritan house and it's open from 9-12 during the week. If your on boulevard turn right on 9th. IT's the little yellow house on your left. She goes to a catholic church I can't remember the name of it but it's next to it. I would also contact the hope center, but i heard you hav to wait and make an appt. Another resource would to go down to DHS and apply for the TANF which is emergency funds for times like this. I don't know how it works but know you will probably need certain items to give them so i would call first. Go to their website and find which building you would go to for they have multiply offices. I hope this helps. Let me know how it goes.

DHS downtown will give you same day emergency assistance if you have and will make less money in the current month than the cost of your rent. They will help you. Hope center also gives a one time $300 help but I don't know what the qualifications are for that. Get on WIC at the Hope center. We were denied unemployment too but several weeks later after several letters stating he was denied we recieved an acceptance letter. Of course that was after he got a job and had it all under control.

When I read this it was like reading what my family is going through right now. My husband was just fired the day before Thanksgiving. Our bank account is overdrawn and we don't know how we are going to be able to make rent. We have filed for umemployment but still havne't heard anything back about if we will or won't get it. We have a 2 year old son and I am pregnant and due in a few weeks and we still don't have anything for the baby, not even a crib. Oh and my husband has been appying for jobs like crazy, but now our car is broke down and we can't afford to fix it so even if he had a job offer he has no way to get there. And our pohone got shut off so now so much for all those job apps he put in. It just seems like we can't get a break, when it rains it pours!
But we did go to DHS and were able to get emergency food stamps for this month, and we applied for energy assistance and they are going to pay most of our electric bill so we will still be able to have electric and heat. We were also able to sign up for the soonercare medical stuff so we can still see the Dr, very important since I'm due in just a few weeks. We checked into WIC and made an appt. but it is a long wait, we won't be able to get in for an interview till the end of Jan. The suggestion of going to local churches is a good one, that is what we are planning on doing once we can find transportation. Lots of churches have food pantry's, clothing clostes, and will even help with bills if you are need. I hope your family gets the help it needs! Also check into help from the Salvation army, I have heard they will help with bills too, and other things. Here is to hoping that both our families can make it through this difficult time as best we can!

I am so sorry to hearof your plight. Please belive that you will get past this. My advice to you is to reach out to a local church. One in a close proximity to your home. Ask them if you can work out a deal where you will work in their nursery on Sunday morning or maybe your husband could mow lawns there this summer. I know that alot of congregations are older and the churchs need help some time. Most of them pay a nursery worker even if its just a little. I know it can be awkward to reach out for help to strangers but take this leap of faith. I have witnessed our church take up money to get a tank of gas for someone or pay thier light bill. Please though try this. Merry Christmas and I am saying a prayer as soon as I send this.

Please let me know how everything works out.
