hey everyone. i just posted last week about this and im sorry to bother you all about this again. i was just wondering how long it takes for them to have some sort of relief once they get their antibtiotic for the ear infection? my little 16 month old has double ear infections and has been sick and running a fever off and on since last sunday. over a week now. shes had her medicine since thursday and seems to be a little better during the day. but the past few nights are getting much worse. im trusting my mothers instinct and thinking its her ears still... so i go to her and comfort her like any mom would do. my husband cant imagine that her ears still hurt her and thinks shes just doing this for attention now. but shes not just crying... she wakes up almost shreiking in the night. she is still very much conjested. ive been running the vaporizer for her for a week. suctioning the nose, and giving tylenol or motrin when she needs it for the fever. i dont want to continue giving her the tylenol or motrin after a week though b/c it says your not supposed to. ive also been giving her the ear drops like many of you had mentioned. those things are hard to get in a little squirmy babies ears! i just expected her to be much better by now. when the ped listened to her lungs they said she was fine and it was just a cold and ear infection (after the 2nd time taking her in last week). well her cough sounds so croopy now. will the ammoxacillin help with that too? im just so beside myself and how long these symtoms are hanging around. my daughter is better when i hold her in the rocking chair, she will go back to sleep, then as soon as i lay her down she wakes up and is screaming again. so that makes me think its still the ears. i dont know. please let me know what you think or if i should take her to the doc again of if its just going to take a while for the infection to clear. thanks again.

What can I do next?

I have dealt with ear infections alot(my oldest had tubes and my youngest is getting them next month)
If after 3 days she doesn't have relief call the dr she might need something stronger.I know my little one felt better and his fevers where pretty much gone by the 3rd day.He just had one and they put him on Bactrim(i think that was the one)and by the 2nd day he felt better...as for the conjestion and snot going on well he still has it.He's had it for so long now(we know it's allergies to something in the house)i'm hoping once we do tubes and things he'll clear up.
Good luck and i say recall the dr and have her checked out again

I would definetly call the doctor again. If the doctor wont see her go to the ER. A medication that my daughter has been on (twice this year so far for ear infections) is augmentum. She was also on the z-pac twice. The z-pac worked really well and is only for five days. Luckily my daughter is getting tubes in her ears next month so hopefully I won't have to worry about this again. The ear infections are rough to deal with. Good Luck

J., you are never bothering anyone when it comes to the health of your child so ask away as often as you need! Every child is different. My daughters responded after the first treatment each time. HOWEVER...the 3 day treatment not the 10 day one. The 10 day antibiotic seldom worked so I always request the 3 day. And then sometimes we had to get another treatment. I have found that making sure they are not lying down while drinking a bottle helps the fluid from draining into the ears. Prop her head up when you lay her down. Chiropractic helps too, very good at preventing ear infections. I always give yogurt too to prevent the effects of the antibiotic. You may want to get a second opinion if youre not satisfied. Best wishes and good health to you & your lil one!

It sounds like your daughter has been on antibiotics since Thurs. It's been my experience that after 2 or 3 days on an antibiotic (whether for an ear infection, sinus infection, etc) you will notice an improvement since the med is fighting the infection. If you think her condition is worse, I would call the dr again and tell him so. In addition to the home remedies, have you tried proping one side of her mattress so her head is elevated a bit? That might help.

Hi J.

You could try propping the end of the crib so her head is elevated a bit. Ear pain does sometimes increase when they are laying down or sucking. I have always found that after about 2 or 3 days on antibiotics my kids were like new. Does she still have a fever? That should be a good indicator if the antibiotics have started kicking the infection. In our experience here when my kids are sick, if they have been awakening at night while sick that they often get into that routine even after they have started feeling better. Reestablishing the sleep routine is up to you and wether you think she is still sick or not.
If your daughter does have Croup, antibiotics do nothing because Croup is viral. If you think she has croup call the doctor again for further advice.
Good luck to you.

I would go to the dr's again and have her checked. Although nights are always worse, her cough has gotten worse and I would want my child checked again.
