Take him to the doctor first and see what he says. I became concerned when I noticed crazy amounts of earwax in my daughter's ears, and I tried debrox. She ended up with an ear infection from me "messing" with her ear! The doctor said tons of earwax is no big deal. Even if there is only a tiny hole in the wax, kids can still hear just fine, and it's not a problem at all. The only time to become concerned is with ear infections. So, he said, leave it alone. I do, and in 4 years she has had no problems because of it.

My SD gets amazing wax build up so my hubby has always used ear drops in her ears to soften the wax. Then she lays on her side & it falls out.
Amazing. I never had seen this before.
Now mind you, she was older when he started doing this & was advised by her ped.
So check w/your doctor first.
I do not put anything in their ears ever, like a Q-tip. Afraid of injuring their ear drums or whatever they say the possible damage it.

One time my kid's ped mentioned excessive wax build up in my kid's ear during a check up, and the ped pulled out this long plastic disposable scraper thing that had a thin teeny tiny cup (smaller than a sunflower seed) at the end and used that to scrape out my kid's ear. So....I "borrowed" (stole) a few out of the drawer and that's how I keep my kid's ears clean now. I have to be really careful and not scrape way inside his inner ear. I swab his earhole w/a q-tip doused in saline (to loosen some of the wax) and then I scrape.

From what I understand, ear wax is from sinus drainage, among other things. Maybe your child's sinuses drains more on one side and than the other.

I do the scrapers as well, HOWEVER I was trained to do it by an ENT to manage my daughters wax. Seriously he had me do it several times to his satisfaction, because you can do major damage to the ear if you nick the wrong part.

If you have a small wiggly kid, forget it. I only did it with her when she was able to sit perfectly still for me. My youngest has a lot and we do the Hydrogen peroxide which works okay, but not great.

My older daughter had this problem when she was a little younger. It was so bad that she would complain of an ear ache and it would turn out to just be a ton of ear wax pressing on her eardrum! Eugh. We had a terrible experience one time at the pediatrician's office where they used a warm water jet thing in her ear, which ripped the ear wax off of the ear drum and made her ears bleed. She was terrified (frankly, I was too - nothing like watching blood pour out of your kid's ear!). We switched doctors, and the new doctor was a really nice, older guy who had been a pediatrician for 50 years. Anyway, he said the best thing to do is have the child lay on her side and pour a little hydrogen peroxide in there. Leave it in for 5 minutes or so, and then have her turn over so it drains out. He said this is just as effective as Debrox, at a fraction of the cost. We tried it and it did work for us. We would do this once or twice a week. Finally when she was 8 or so, her ear wax stopped being such an issue. She is 9 now and we only use hydrogen peroxide in her ears a few times a year.

Some people are just prone to creating more wax than others.
You can flush it out with warm water with a little peroxide like they do at the doctors office.

What ever you do - do not be tempted to use any ear candling.
It's very dangerous and doesn't work.

The ear is self-cleaning.
Our Pediatrician says, do not clean it or put anything into the ear like a Q-tip.
Some people have more wax than others and are fine.
Like my son.
The ear, pushes the wax out.

Now if your son seems to have too much, well just wait until you see what the Pediatrician says.
Do not self remedy this. Without getting Doctor advice.

Our Ped says, do not put anything in the ear or inner ear. You can puncture the ear drum. To just clean the OUTER ear.

For us excessive ear wax is a big sign of food intolerance.

Both my husband and my younger son get it when they eat alot of gluten or dairy.

We stumbled upon this by accident . . . went dairy, and then gluten, free for other reasons, and my husband noticed that his ear wax nearly disappeared, and so did son's. My husband actually had to see the doctor for it (excessive ear wax) several times in his life, so cutting it way down was a God-send.

I don't have an answer - but I can relate as my daughter, now 15 still produces lots of earwax. We tease her that she's like Shrek (when he stuck something in his ear and pulled out a candle, lit it and ate dinner by the light of the earwax candle). There's not much you can do that you're not already doing. We are just all odd creatures aren't we?

My daughter also has excessive ear wax and a few months ago mentioned her left ear was hurting. I took her to the doctor and was told the pain was from excessive ear wax in her ear, especially the left. First, the doctor tried to flush it out with a big syringe (sp) filled with warm water. That did not work but probably softened the wax a bit. Then the doctor used an electric machine that looked something like a water pik, with warm water. It worked great and lots of wax flushed out of the ear. My daughter said it did not hurt, and she felt much better. The doctor recommened Debrox drops in the meantime to help control the wax.

@ B- EW! I had NEVER heard of that until you mentioned it here!

I'm looking forward to other responses because my 3yr old son constantly has "topatoes" in his ears. I've tried Debrox and Hydrogen Peroxide/water and nada.

If it's really bad you can try ear candles. You have to be careful when you use them but they work great!!!!!!!!! My son got a little freeked out by it but it helped SO much!!! You can google them and see what it is.
