I am writing this question in the middle night, I am praying I don't need the advice in the morning.....but in case I do,

My daughter has had diarrhea for the past 7 days and I was wondering if there is a similar thing going around. We went to fla for spring break and the day after we returned it started.

I have called the pedi who has recommended bland food, rice, crackers, applesauce etc. And we are using probiotic. She seems happy, no fever..,,,just the diarrhea after almost everything she eats.

I am calling the pedi again tomorrow but just thought I ask you for your insight. FYI, no changes to her diet have occured -no new milk products or any other food products she normally has eaten have been different than what she has normally eaten in the past 6-9 months.

Can u help w any advice please!!

What can I do next?

Florida has been hit very hard with a GI bug. Everyone I know has had it! And yes it does keep the system upset for quite a while. Our niece got fed "real" food too soon and just kept throwing up because it kept irritating the system and ended up having to get an upper GI (that was fine of course they just needed to stop feeding her spaghetti-O's-duh!). Like B said, keep her on the BRAT diet and add yogurt too. I see you are using probiotics but adding the yogurt too will also give her something else to eat and you already know it will help get her gut back on track.

And be aware that she will still be highly contagious for 3 days after the symptoms end and she can still shed cells from the virus for up to 2 weeks after (taken from the CDC website). It's a terrible bug. Sounds like you guys got lucky with a milder case!

Hi K.,

Years ago my son had those symptoms and we finally found that he had giardia. The medicine helped within 24 hours. (We had to take in a stool sample to the Dr. office.)

God bless,
A.

As long as the doctor isn't worried, I wouldn't worry too much. The key thing is making sure she gets lots of water. Our son had rotavirus when he was two and had serious diarrhea for two weeks. It was awful. But we basically did exactly what you're doing, on the doctor's advice. The big thing with diarrhea is just watching for signs of dehydration (like not peeing much).

Strange I know, but who is to say what is causing it. Is she teething? It could be the fact that she is teeething it sometimes causes diarrhea. In the mean time just make sure she has plenty of fluids. As long as she is normal in activity and not running a temp, She will be okay.

obviously she probably drank tap water while she was there? sometimes you can get traveler's diarrhea when you drink other cities tap water. it is probably working on her little system. stay with the bland diet and keep her hydrated.

The pediatrician we had when our son was a baby told me that sometimes when a gut is irritated it can stay irritated for a while even after the initial source of the irritation is gone. Just stay with the bananas, rice, applesauce, toast (BRAT) (I don't recommend tea as people have different reactions to teas and the one they usually recommend to clear up diarrhea gives me the runs) diet and make sure she gets plenty of water and pedialyte to keep her hydrated. It's not unusual for the diarrhea to hang around for a few weeks. She'll be fine as long as fluids and electrolytes are kept up. Since diarrhea is so acidic, you will need to slather on the diaper rash ointment to keep the diaper rash at bay. It's a rare baby that goes through birth to potty training without at least one bout of diarrhea / diaper rash in between. You'll get through this.
