I just took my 7 month old daughter to a doctor who specializes in ears, nose, throat and found out that she has fluid in both of her ears and we are looking at possibly have to get tubes put in her ears. My main question is how common is this procedure now days compaired to the past.
My son had the same problem when he was 2. All he could say was mama and dada. They put tubes in and he started talking in sentences within a week. It was unbelieveable. He is 10 now and hasn't had any problems since. It was the right thing to do. Good Luck!!!
I know that when i had tubes in my ears, 17 years ago, I was hospitalized for like two days. My friend had tubes, last year, in her daughters ears and it was an outpatient procedure. So the procedure is MUCH more common these days. My son had to have his tonsils and adenoids out this past December and I trusted my pediatrician enough to go with her recommendation for an ENT Dr. It is very scary to know that your child is going to be put under anesthesia and go into surgery but I did it and so can you. My son is having this done.. all the kids in this geration had it done.. Am talking about my family.. ITs very common... The fluid puts presure on the ear drums and it can repture them.. MY baby girl just had a ear drum reputure... So she is better.. I am glad that he is having it done.. He is a snore and he has sleep amnina and he has cronic ear infections....
If I could just make a suggestion...Have the tubes put in her ears!! My daughter has had problems with ear infections for 2 years and the tubes have made them all go away! She is happier and can hear and talk so much better. We got the tubes in Sept and she has only had one ear infection. Before the procedure she had one every month! The thing that takes so long is getting them to wake up from being put under!
I just had a friend whos infant son just had tubes and he told me that it was like nothing that his baby was in a better mood when waking up from getting the tubes then he has been since birth. I guess knowing the baby before surgery and seeing him after I am all for tubes if they are needed.

i had tubes put in my sons ears when he was around 8 months because he had constant ear infections and he was crabby for a day or two but that was it and it only took about 30min for the procedure.
I think it is very common. Our youngest daughter had them put in at 1 year she had 5 ear infevtions in that first year and had an 80% hearing loss in her right ear.
We went in early in the morning for the procedure it was done in less than 30min. They gave her meds to sleep through it so she was a little sleepy afterwards and they gave us drops to put in them for a week.But it was like she looked at the world differant she could hear!
She had them in for almost a 1year and a half before they fell out and hasn't had to have them put back in. She is 3 now.

My pediatrician is of the opinion that tubes are done too frequently but, after countless ear infections, she strongly recommended my son have tubes put in. He was constantly on antiobiotics. We put in the tubes in Oct 06 and he's only had one ear infection since, and that was when he had strep throat. Our ENT also said that we didn't need to keep him out of the water. We never protect his ears from water (never use ear plugs) and it's never been a problem. It was definitely the right decision for us.

I am a single mother of a 7 year old son that has had trouble with his ears since he was an infant. He had tubes put in when he was 9 months old. It made a world of difference! Yes, it is a very common procedure these days. Matter of fact, I am home right now with my son because he had to have tubes put in again and have his adenoids and tonsils taken out. He has had chronic ear infections and he has had his eardrums rupture more times than I care to remember! And he always had fluid in his ears and he couldn't hear very well because his eardrums didn't have the room to vibrate like they should. I could tell immediately after this surgery that he could hear better because we weren't fighting over the volume on the tv! :-) I would highly recommend doing the procedure! It is well worth it! The procedure does not take very long at all and my son slept most of the day after we got home, and the next day he was back to normal like nothing ever happened. Good luck!! I hope this helps. M.
