Yesterday while my daughter was eating a bean and cheese burrito she started to choke-she was able to cough it up but it could have easily been disastrous. Then today, with every meal she choked (meaning she turns red, coughs, opens mouth real wide, cries, and tries to get the food out of her mouth). It is really scary and it scares her really bad too. I noticed that when she spits the food out there is a whole lot of it like she is just stuffing as much as she can in her mouth without swallowing. Has anybody ever heard of this or had this happen to their child? Do I need to call the doctor or just work with her at every meal to make sure she takes little bites and chews it all up?
Yes, Please take your daughter to the doctor. She could have an obstruction in her airway or other medical problem resulting in her choking.
I'm sure this is very upsetting to her and you as well and I'm confident your doctor would much rather see her in the office than the emergency room.

Yes, please talk with your pediatrician about this. I've had my son in speech therapy so I know that children can sometimes experience developmental delays in feeding, some of the symptoms of this can be gagging or vomiting their food. Your doctor can recommend these services or you can call and schedule a free assessment to see if your child needs therapy. I know there's a number for Denton County - so you could at least call to get some information. I know one mother did have therapy for her son who was not eating very well, and ECI (Early Childhood Intervention) came out once a week to coach and offer new techniques to help him. He was around 2 yrs old, at the time, too. Here's a link to ECI's website:

My 2 yr. old had this problem too to the point I've had to preform the heimlich maneuver on her. She was also prone to strep throat too. She had it so many times that she just got use to it & I never knew she was sick until I realized she had a fever. After have her adnoids & tonsils out she's been eating a whole lot better.

My son does this on a daily bases. When it goes on for more then 12 hours I know he his getting sick. Shes probably has a sore throat and cant swollow. My son has tonsillitis for the third time in a row and he always has ear infections. Also, he is getting his 2 yr back molers. See if she will let you look in her throat, I bet its red and swollen. She may have an ear infection as well. My son never says anything so you dont know untill its a little late. Just a little grumpiness, restless sleep and not eating. He will put food in his (too much) mouth and you can tell he is hungry. Make an appt for her in the morning so you get her medican quickly.
I am taking my son to see and ENT Dr this week. He is 2 1/2 now and has been doing this from about 1 yr. Its getting old and hes in his 5th pertile for weight.
Give her lots of cold things like yogurt untill you can get her to the Dr.

I would call the Dr.
I know of a condition where the esophagus gets constricted making swalling very difficult & involves choking. The person I know that has it will eat about 1/4 to a half a meal, choke & most of what they ate comes back up. Good luck!
