Clomid - Akron, OH

When we failed naturally to get pregnant my OB put us on Clomid along with a HCG shot to trigger ovulation. After 3 months of no success we went on to a reproductive encrindologist. He had us on Clomid also (but would adjust the dose), did the ultrasounds to see how I was responding, and also did the HCG shot. One side effect of continued use of Clomid is the growth of cysts which I had one cycle (it would not have been picked up without the ultrasound, and would have been a wasted cycle). I did not have any side effect (like moodiness) that you hear a lot of with Clomid. We also did IUIs but were unsuccessful on Clomid (although I responded very well, i.e. I made lots of follicles) and eventually went on to use a different type of fertility drug which is injected and that is how I had my twins! It is my understanding that the risk of multiples increase once you move on from Clomid, but of course it's always a possiblity. Best of luck!

Most ob/gyn's will want to try clomid anywhere from a few cycles, but no more than 6 cycles before referring you to a reproductive surgeon/endocrinologist. I would do only 2-3 cycles before going on to the endocrinologist, and even then would probably not want to do clomid from there.

Clomid didn't help me much because I had other issues that were of greater magnitude keeping me from conceiving. That's what the reproductive endocrinologist will help determine if you get that far. That's why I tend to suggest others only try it for maybe 2-3 cycles, if that.

Yes, I experienced side effects, mostly, it made me grumpy. I do know a few people who went on it, and had kids, and one of them actually had multiples, but only twins.

I was on Clomid and really did not experience any side effects. It worked as intended - stimulated the follicles to grow.

The most important piece of advice I can give you, however, is to realize that Clomid is not a magic pill. You may have to go through quite a bit of trial and error (and perhaps other drugs) to determine the best composition for you. Your doctor will likely start you at 50, then move to higher doses. The doctor may have to take a 'trigger' to release the egg (like hcg). The doctor may have you take a combination of oral (clomid) and injectable (follistim or other) drugs to properly stimulate the follicles. It all kind of depends on what your body and your hormones are doing/not doing.

As far as multiples are concerned...if your doctor is a good doctor, he or she will be checking the growth of follicles while you are using Clomid through a transvaginal ultrasound. You will DEFINITELY be able to see any emerging follicles (the little black dots start to grow larger and larger and you will see them on the screen). If you have a whole lot of 'candidate eggs' you can make the decision as to whether or not you choose to try to fertilize them.

Hi there. I'm an older momma (38) with much experience with Clomid. Are you going for the appt to see if the Clomid is working? Clomid is ok to deal with & can be very effective in getting your ovaries working. Which is a wonderful thing. I have a beautiful little 2 yr old boy thanks to a second round of it! I really didn't notice too many side affects with it at all. Just a little crampiness every so often. I am not well versed in the multiple birth side of Clomid though. Hope this helps!

Everyone is different, I had some side effects from clomid, but very mild. I've heard of others who had horrible ones. Keep in mind this has hormones in it and whenever women put hormones in their body it's going to effect it, but everyone is different. Out of all the women I've known to take clomid I know of 1 that had multiples from it (triplets). Goodluck
