Anyone know much about this? My friends small daughter was just diagnosed with this. Can someone let me know what it is. Anything anyone can do to help the family? Is it serious?

What can I do next?

One of my friends just had brain surgery for it last week. She went for years and years with doctors not knowing what was wrong with her. She suffered from headaches, horrible back pain, etc. Basically, your brain kind of spills over into your spinal column, causing lots of issues. I don't know too much more than that, but I know that you can potentially die from it. She feels much better since having her surgery and it's only been a week. I'll pray for that little girl.

There are two types of Chiari - Arnold involves the brain and Budd which I think is the liver. I only know about Arnold Chiari. I had decompression surgery in 2000 and best thing ever for me. A lot depends on level and complications.

Was an extremely helpful website for me. I would encourage your friend to have her daughter see a Pediatric Neurologist who has some knowledge about Chiari. My first specialist was a nitwit, 2nd was awesome!)

If it's Budd, sorry no idea.

I used to work in an MRI lab. It is quite common and treatable. Not to minimize the stress on the family when any health issue is discovered, but their daughter can be treated and lead a perfectly normal, happy, healthy life.
