Cheesy Shower Gift? Need Honest Opinion.

Hi everyone! I just need your honest opinion since my husband and I have a difference of opinion on this. I've been invited to a bridal shower that is being given to a 45-ish year old woman who is marrying a friend of ours at church. The shower is being given by the women of the church and we're all helping by bringing food for a luncheon. This is a second marriage for both, if that matters.

So here's my question - I'm a Pampered Chef consultant. I have a friendly relationship with the bride and I know for a fact that she loves to cook. I often run into her at our local Wegmans where we talk about what we'll be cooking that night, etc. I was thinking of putting a gift basket together with a selection of Pampered Chef products. It will cost me about 60% of the retail price of the products, so I would get more bang for my buck.

Is it cheesy that I'm giving her products that I also sell? I don't know anyone who would turn their nose up at receiving PC products - most people love them. My husband (who would normally not have an opinion on gifts I choose to give) feels that people might think it's a little self-promoting. My intention is to give her a nice gift I think she'll appreciate. How would you feel about receiving such a gift from me? Thoughts?

What can I do next?

Personally, I wouldn't have a problem with it, I would actually probably say "good for you" as you are able to save so much money. :) I also love PC products and wouldn't think twice about who gave them to me, just that it's stuff that I can use

I think it's a great idea, especially given the fact that the bride & groom aren't particularly young & it isn't their first marriage so they likely don't need much in the way of kitchen-y stuff, etc.

Dude, I would invite you to a shower in hopes I'd get some Pampered Chef stuff even if I didn't like you...I love Pampered Chef.

I think if you do not put a catalog or anything with your name and consultant information on it then it's not a sale opportunity. It's a gift that you can give exclusively.

It's not cheesy. You're paying for these items. I'd love to receive another one of their pizza stones if it was a gift occasion for me! Buying products with your discount means she'll get more, and it's no different than using a coupon at Bed, Bath and Beyond.

Hi cooking mom-

I am divorced...so no anniversary parties for me...**sigh**

I am not planning on getting married again, so no bridal showers...**sigh**

Post menopausal, so no baby showers (unless you see a great star rising in the east...LOL)...so no baby showers...**sigh**

BUT, I do have a birthday party coming in August! I invite you to become my 'new' friend, and come for a visit to the 'moonshine capitol' of the world!

LOL

I think your gift idea is wonderful...truly!

Best Luck!

Pampered Chef is really good quality and if you know for a fact that she enjoys cooking, I think that is a very thoughtful gift. The only drawback is that is she already has something, she can't return it.

I sell Thirty One and often give those products as gifts. They are high quality, useful things and it isn't like I am putting a business card in the bag and asking them to host a party! :)

I say go for it!

I think if she "likes" cooking and would "use" the products, it's a great idea.. You're not attaching your own personalized label onto each product... Some people might not even know "you" sell it~

It's a great idea. Just make sure to spend what you typically would, because she and everyone else will know you got a discount. For what it's worth, a friend of mine owns a kids bookstore. She always gives books from her store as gifts. It seems normal to me!

I think you should go for it as long as you don't use it as an opportunity to market your goods.
A gift should be a gift with no strings attached.

I know many people who would love such a gift and would never purchase it for themselves.

Just my opinion.

I would love it as Im sure she would also!

For my birthday last year a friend of mine gave me a bag ( a nice reusable bag from Tupperware with a pretty bow on it) and it was filled with about 15 Tupperware products. Some bigger items, some medium items and few small ones.

It was unopened/ unused stuff she had that was going onto the discontinued book and the only reason I knew that was because I was at her last show :) But everything was stuff I still use today and it didn't bother me one bit! I love everything she gave me.

Just make sure you are not duplicating what she already owns, in one way or another. This stems from the fact that I am almost 50 & have pretty much all I want in my kitchen. Sure a few things could be updated, a few could be tossed....but I do have what I need. If she's 45ish & this is their 2nd marriage....then she may have a full kitchen. :)

A compromise between you/your DH: make a food basket combined with some of your fav PC items. Include an unusual cookbook (since we know she knows the standards from your shared conversations). Add some local delicacies, etc.

I would have a shower to receive a gift like that! How about an anniversary party? Would you give me a basket like that? My 43rd anniversary is in a few months. LOL

Seriously, just about any woman would love a gift like that. PC products are fantastic.

And as for the 60% off retail price.....if you found a gift at a store and it was on sale for 60% off would you say, "I can't give it to her unless I pay full price for it."? Of course not! Give her the gift basket.

If at some later date she asks about you being a sales person for PC, you can tell her if she wants any other items to give you a call.

BTW If she already knows you sell PC products she is probably secretly hoping for something like that from you.

When my husband and I got married 9 years ago, we got a basket filled with PC items. The person giving it to us was a PC consultant. I didn't care, I loved receiving the basket because we love to cook and they were all items that we used, but were to cheap to buy ourselves. I think it's a FABULOUS idea.

Just whatever you do, don't put a business card in there, then it would really would be self promoting.

Great idea on the PC stuff.

Not cheesy at all! My girlfriend sells Mary Kay and I look forward her gifts- lip glosses, mascara, etc. I would add a few non-PC gifts to the basket as well. Depending on what they like, a bottle of wine and a couple of gourmet cheeses, gift card to Wegman's or a local wine store, monogrammed kitchen towels... something outside of what you sell along with a beautiful basket of kitchen "stuff" is great!

I have gotten Pampered Chef and Books as gifts from my sister when she sold them, Longanberger (sp?) & Avon gifts from my mom when she sold them, Avon gifts from my Aunt that she still sells and my sister has giving me cloth diapers as gifts that she makes and sells and Avon stuff she sells... I loved all the gifts, some of which was stuff they knew I loved because we bought it from them in the past other was stuff I could have never gotten on my own.

I think you would be able to afford to give her a better gift because of the discount then to go to the store and by her almost the same thing... if hubby don't like it - have him do the shopping for them - lol :)

If she doesn't want the gift basket, I'll take it. Pampered Chef has some really cool stuff. A lot better than a basket from Bed and Bath. I don't see it as self-promoting unless you actually put your business card or a flyer in it to book a party. I see no difference in creating a gift basket filled with Pampered Chef goodies or a gift basket filled with retail store goodies like Bed and Bath, Bon Ton stuff, Paula Dean stuff, etc. It sounds really fun. You could even add a favorite easy recipe in the basket too.

In this case, because you know she likes to cook, I think it would be a great gift. If my friend were a PC rep, I would be hoping for something cool from PC!! As long as it's not a free gift or promotion or clearance item that you are getting at a discount.
In my office secret santa, the girl that got me is an Avon rep. We had a $10 limit. She gave me a makeup bag that I saw in the brochure on clearnace for $5. Which means she probably paid $3! I was a little irritated that she didnt make an effort for me. Just gave me some crappy thing she mightve even gotten for free! That told me exactly how she feels about me.

Neither the gift nor the giver are diminished by the price paid for the gift. When my kids were little I would buy the birthday presents they would give when they were invited birthday parties throughout the year at the after Christmas sales.
