Hi ladies,

My little girl is 1 year old and I started to introduce different kind of food. She is kind of picky when it comes to cheese. Which one would you recommend - american, cheddar, Colby-Jack, Mozzarella.

Thanks for your input:)

What can I do next?

mild chedder or colby-jack are what my kids like the best. or the mozzarella string cheese. Or oh, Laughing Cow makes these adorable little cheese wheels, soft swiss in little foil pouches, the package is shaped like a circle. So good to spread on crackers.

Try them all, although American isn't exactly the best and it sticks to things. My son loved string cheese sliced in little circles but now at two "I a big boy, no cut mommy". My oldest son only ate white cheese when he was younger, provolone, mozzarella, monterey jack. Now that he's older he eats just about any unless they're really pungent no feta for him. They both love meunster ("monster") cheese and gouda too.

Anything but American, since it is cheeze, not cheese.

I would try all cheeses (except the raw milk ones) - at a year my son ate cheddar, parmesan, gorgonzola, brie etc. He never liked soft goat cheeses (still doesn't at 5 and he tries them often enough so I guess it's a really preference) and we have not done American cheese since we avoid processed foods.

Limiting her choices encourages her to be picky although that is not the intent. Continuing to expose her to a wide variety of tastes repeatedly encourages a healthy appetite.

The average number of times a baby/toddler needs to try a new food before the will consistently eat it is between 12 and 16. Most parents give up long before that assuming a dislike while most of the time it's just the 'newness' of the food not a real preference.

My son LOVES sharp cheddar. He will eat most cheeses, but he is crazy about the sharp cheddar.

Nutritionally, I would avoid American cheese, altho its the easiest for Grill Cheese sandwiches :-)

I do alot of tiny cheese "chunks" or cubes with my toddlers in my home daycare. As soon as they turn one they go on the big kid menu...but many are eating most things well before a year here (not honey or peanut butter of course or hard raw veggies/apples). My toddlers LOVE sting cheese and colby chunked up into small bits!

I agree with Missy about the American cheese, but any of the others are just fine. With the cheddar cheese, do make sure it's mild cheddar, otherwise it will be too strong for her sensitive taste buds.

If you have access to fresh cream cheese, that might be another option. Cream cheese is a little tar, so you could sweeten it a little with some homemade jam, agave, or whatever you use as a sweetener.

As a side note, be sure to check with your doctor about honey...I'm not sure how old children need to be before they can handle honey. Before a certain age, their digestive system cannot process the botulism that naturally occurs in honey, so its always best to ask the doctor first.

Good luck and have fun with the cheese introduction!

My daughter like mild cheddar sticks, cream cheese with a little jelly and she absolutely loves Queso Fresco. I buy the V&V Supremo brand because I know it is pasteurized. Sometimes we cut it up and put it in the microwave for 10-15 seconds. It is great on crackers, as is or on tortillas.

I am picky too, so I started my daughter with string cheese - she loved that she could pull it - and colby jack because it's really mild (and what I eat).

Mine started with the laughing cow cheeses (all flavors) and cream cheese. It's just what I ate. Now she will eat all kinds, but isn't really keen on mozzarella (unless when I make pizza). She loves american and different cheddars the best. She still loves the cream cheese too, lol.

my kids like all of them. Their favorite is cheddar bacon.

Give her choices and see what one she likes.

Try all kinds of cheese to see which she prefers. Most kids I know love mozzarella, my little guy won't touch it, he prefers a stronger flavored cheese and loves sharp, I compromise and give him Cheddarella most of the time.

But keep in mind that cheese is very binding and can cause constipation. I've had to cut him down to having it no more than twice a week, even though he loves it.

have you tried the string cheese? it is a little softer than block cheese. my toddler loves it, but then again he will eat pretty much everything you give him. I would maybe go with something mild at first just to get her used to it.

Children ususally prefer the milder and softer cheeses, so that would be american or mozzarella. Monteray jack is also a good choice.
