Calling Other Scaredy-Cat Mamas - Has Your Husband Done This to You?

So last night my husband "made" me watch Insidious with him (I know, I know... My fault for watching the movie in the first place, but I have seen the movie once before and I didn't remember it being too scary (Keep in mind the last time I watched this movie it was around noon and I was on my computer while the movie was playing so I wasn't paying too much attention to it and the fear that I did feel had been forgotten by the time I went to bed that night)). I was actually paying attention this time and it was a little dark outside. Oh my god, I was TERRIFIED! My muscles hurt because I was so tense.

The movie ended at 9:20pm. At 9:21pm, hubby announced that he was going to go to bed. WHAT?! Normally he goes to bed at 10:30pm and gets up at 5:30am. The night before he went to bed at midnight but still had to wake up at 5:30am for work, so I understood why he was tired... But come on! He knows that I get freaked out by movies like this and he knew darn well how scared I was (I think I may have cut off the circulation to his arm by hugging his upper arm/shoulder too tight). And no, this wasn't a 'I'm gonna go to bed' as in let's go have sex. He was actually tired and wanted to go to sleep. Lol.

Anyways, I have two option... Go to bed with him or stay in the living room by myself (Well, I had Oliver with me but he was too busy playing with legos). The obvious choice would be to go to bed with hubby and cuddle up to him for protection, right? Wrong. I usually go to bed at midnight and wake up at 9:30am, so I wasn't tired. That means that I would have been laying in bed, in a dark room, with snoring husband and a crying toddler (Oliver wasn't tired either), scared out of my mind for at least an hour and a half (That's how long it usually takes me to fall asleep once I'm in bed)... Did I mention the dark room part? So that option is out. I am left with the option of staying out in the living room by myself. I had the kitchen light on, the lamp in the living room on (The living room doesn't have it's own overhead light), and the hall light on... Basically every light available. I turned on 'Shark Week' to try to get my mind off of Insidious. It worked well enough for me to make it to bedtime (Btw, if I'm ever attacked by a shark here in Minnesota I now know what to do).

Then bedtime came... Which meant that I had to turn off those lights. My heart was beating so fast! I seriously thought that I was going to turn off a light and one of the demon thingies would appear. I made it to the bedroom... Then I had to turn off the last light (The hall light). I grabbed a hanger, hid behind the door, quickly used the hanger to turn off the light, dropped the hanger, slammed the door, jumped on the bed, pulled the covers over my head, and screamed into my pillow.

So I know that I'm not the only scaredy-cat out there. Has your husband ever left you to fend for yourself after watching a scarey movie? How did you get through it? Tips for me?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Lol, Nikki. I know. I'm horrible when it comes to scary movies.

Jo - I did "use my words". I was fine with watching the movie because I thought he was going to stay awake longer than he did. I understood why he was going to bed and didn't argue with him about it. I'm not seriously mad at him for going to bed. He knows that.

LOL It's kinda the opposite for us. When we watched "The Exorcism of Emily Rose" my husband wouldn't go to sleep. He kept hearing noises. Granted, I do get spooked but no to the same extent. I used to, though. I would have to just take a sleeping pill so I couldn't let my imagination run wild, lol.

Oh my gosh, when reading the first part, I thought you were going to say the same exact thing that happened to me after I watched Insidious.

After we watched it, my husband said he was going to bed too. So I went out of our bedroom to shut all the lights out throughout the house and make sure all the doors were locked, my husband popped out of the pitch black dining room and screamed.
I have not screamed so loud or jumped so high in my life. My throat was sore the next day from screaming so loud!
I dont even know why Im still with him!! Lol!

That movie freaked me out!

:) Molly

The last scary show I watched was when the election coverage proclaimed Obama had won the election. It was scary then. Its a nightmare now.

I always have a good book on the shelf somewhere and when my wife wants to watch a scary movie or doesn't want to change the channel, I get the book out. Of course if she wants to watch "Project Runway" I do the same.

Good luck to you and yours.

No, my husband knows I have the sense to say this movie is scary and either leave or make him turn it off. If I sat through a movie it would be reasonable to assume I was okay. It does not matter if I jump, squeeze, or gasp, if I am in distress I open my mouth and use clear words.

You are married, you have a kid, don't you think it is time you grow up and start using your words? Your husband didn't leave you to fend for yourself, you didn't say anything and allowed him to walk away. He didn't know.

I am only saying this because this is going to wear thin quickly with him. Yeah, guys love being needy, for a while, after a while a needy wife gets really annoying.

After reading your what happened: why didn't you just say hey that movie effected me worse than I expected. Could you stay up a little longer? Do you mind if I wake you up when I go to bed? All of these things are reasonable requests for the asking that would have saved you a lot of stress.

I don't watch scary movies any more. Before I had kids I loved them, now not so much.

I am stuck on "I usually go to bed at midnight and wake up at 9:30am"
That's 9.5 hours of sleep ~ I am thrilled when I get 7. So jealous.

I thank God every day neither me nor my husband watch horror films or movies that make you scared to death. I really do feel for you though.

Honestly if you get that frighted why expose yourself to movies that do that to you? I would just respectfully bow out the next time he tries to suck you into a scarry movie.

Make him watch Notting Hill or some romantic drama by Nicholas Sparks...and then turn off the TV and make him talk about the movie with you. It won't help your fear of scary movies but it'll sure even the score!

I can't watch scary movies that seem "real". Like those haunted ones out with the ghosts, I can't even watch the previews. However, hubby and I get a kick out of the dumb B movies on cable. I think he taped one about murderous whale watchers or something that we are saving for this weekend. Those are always so dumb they don't actually scare me, but the other ones, I don't watch at all. So my tip is, next time just don't watch! =)

Oh my gosh! My husband loves to scare the pee out of me! We just recently moved and I swear our house is haunted. So hubby tells the spirits they should screw with me because I'm scared of them. And he enjoys standing outside the window until I look up and jump out of surprise. LOL

That being said.. I've been in your situation many times. I grab a night light we keep in the kitchen. I need to kick these silly fears. But man it's hard.

I am not a fan of scary movies at all! Forget about watching them at night. The last time I watched a scary movie at night, I was alone (even my son was with my parents) and I slept with the light on. For a week. I don't watch them often, but when I do it is in the middle of the day when it is sunny outside on a day that I will not be in the house alone at night!

Lord no.

It's been four years since I've watched a horror flick.

The last time I thought, huh, maybe I've toughened up some. Sure, maybe it would be fun to get a little goose bumpy. So I agreed to watch "this really good French psychological horror movie that's not even THAT scary."

I was, like, 35 weeks pregnant and a tad bit more sensitive than usual but truth be told, I have never had a stomach for scary movies.

Anyway, I watched the entire thing. I have NO idea why, but I did. And then I had nightmares for the next month. Blarg.

Never. Again.

Sorry, but no. My husband doesn't have any interest in movies like that. What did scare the mess out of me though, was The Possession of Emily Rose. (I think that was the name anyway... a few years ago). We saw it at the theater.
I NEVER wake up during the night. That night I just happened to wake up at 3:30 a.m. Ugh.... Creepy...

oops... it was "The Exorcism of Emily Rose"...
