Caffeine!!! - Orange,CA

Hello all! How much caffeine goes into breastmilk? I have not had caffeine [outside of whatever is in a chocolate bar or hot chocolate(aprox. 30mg)] since I became pregnant July of 2006. Isaac is 16 months old now and only breastfeeds at night. He feeds to sleep, 2am and 5am. I just had the luxury of a summer off and went back to work at a different school that starts even earlier than the previous school I counseled at. I also am thinking my hot chocolate has more fat than I need right now so I would like to go back to drinking chai tea. It has 120mg of caffeine compared to a cup of coffee which has 260-330mg of caffeine (according to Starbucks.com). If I drink it around 7 in the morning, how much will be in my breastmilk at 7:30 at night? How will it affect my son? Any advice is appreciated! Thank you!

So What Happened?

Thank you! I feel much better. I ordered my Chai tea and only had a few sips because I was worried I wouldn't be able to fall asleep! I plan to drink my chai when I need one instead of the fattening hot chocolate so I can lose that belly flub that wasn't there before pregnancy! Thank you for your support!

From everything I read and from what all my drs have told me you would need to drink at least 8 glasses of coffe/tea for it to cause any effect. I drank tea (a cup or two a day) and ate chocolate all through out my pregnancy and still do it now while breastfeeding and my 4 month old is in perfect health. Everything is ok in moderation!

Oh my goodness girlie! Have your chai! In fact, have two! lol - Caffeine only enters the breastmilk at 0.5-2.8% of what is in the mothers bloodstream. The half life of caffeine for a typical adult is 3-4 hours, meaning all of the caffeine would be out of your system in 6-8. But even if it wasn't, your son would be just fine!! I drink a cup of coffee each day and nurse my newborn and it has not had any effect on her at all. Even if you drank your chai and nursed 45 mins later when the caffeine in your milk was at its peak you'd be giving him FOUR milligrams of caffeine. I'd say you definitely deserve your chai!

I enjoyed one cup of coffee everyday while pregnant and breastfeeding. I had different doctors with each child and each assured me that one cup a day was fine. Go ahead and enjoy your tea or even coffee.
