Bumpy Diaper Rash

My daughter has had fairly mild diaper rashes in the past but has just recently developed a bumpy rash. It almost looks like little pimples. Her mild diaper rashes were never bumpy, just red. I called her doctor's office to see what they recommend and they want to see her. I'm bringing her in tomorrow morning but I'm wondering if anyone else has had experience with this bumpy sort of rash and what worked for them? I have been using Desitin which has worked on her more mild rashes. I've been using it religiously on this rash too but it just doesn't seem to be doing the trick.

So What Happened?

I'd like to thank everyone for their quick responses! I took her to the doctor this morning and it was indeed yeast. The doctor prescribed Nystatin cream for her.

It's hard to know without being a physician or seeing it first hand. But, possibly a yeast rash of sorts. My child had one once and the Dr. gave a perscription med. for it. Destin doesn't always work for some rashes. Most other types of over the counter creams have the same types of ingreadiants and my not work either. The prescription types work great. Do take the child to the dr. The rash could go away so much faster and it's so hard to have the child in pain every time it needs a changing. I felt embarrassed the first time I took my child to the Dr. for diaper rash and felt like I must be a bad parent . . . but there are lots of foods and drinks that can irritate that skin area . . rashes can be a common thing. It's not always the parents fault. Please, go ahead and see the Dr. It's in the best interest of the child.

My daughter got something like that about a year ago and it turned out she had developed an allergy to the diaper brand. However if this is not the case a nurse once gave me the recipe for what she called "pooper paste", gross but true. Mix any amount you want.
Desitin, neosporin, a cream anti-fungal and an anti-itch cream. Mix and reapply every time you change their diaper. Also, if it is yeast, plain yogurt helps a lot! I hope you find out what works.

It could be little sweat pimples...my daughter gets them on her stomach once in a while, and has had them on her butt before. Diaper rash doesn't seem to help, because it seems to hold the heat in more. I'd try letting her go naked for a while here and there...maybe that'll help. :)

I have a 15 month old little girl and she recently got over the worst diaper rash she has ever had! Ask your doctor for perscription butt paste or poop goop it is great. I would first swat her butt (lightly they're sore) with a baby sock filled with cornstartch (picks up all excess moisture) then would apply the poop goop, worked wonders! And yes she had the little red pimple like rash but it is completely gone none. Good Luck!

I had the same thing with my daughter and the Dr. told me it was a yeast infection. I bought some anti-fungal that the pharmacist recommended and it was gone about 1.5 days after putting the anti-fungal cream on her. I'd go to the Dr. just to make sure that's what it is though.

My first daughter had this also and I brought her to the doctor and it turned out to be a staph infection and she needed topical antibiotics 4 times a day. Also, I have use the Butt Paste and it works wonderfully :) Good Luck :)

Earlier this year, our daughter had a diaper rash and none of the petroleum based creams worked. We got Dr. Smith's paste which is at Walgreens and I'm thinking it works better than Butt Paste. We also got a prescription butt paste which works well. Also try putting cornstarch on either directly or on top of the cream. It's sort of messy but it helped too.

Yeast can look kind of pimply. My son gets that a lot. We've been giving him acidophilus (the live and active cultures in yogurt, concentrated) for a while and that seems to help it go away and prevent rashes. If you're interested in brands/ doses, let me know.

Yep it sounds like a yeast infection. If you are nursing, watch for signs of thrush in both you and her. If you develop thrush, gentian violet on you and in her mouth will clear it up, as will acidophilus caplets, you take them, and also break one open and rub the powder in her mouth so she can swallow it. its a probiotic and 'good' bacteria that will help fight it off.

My daughter is 3.5 months old and she has acid reflux. I thought her bumpy rash was an allergic reaction to the brand of diapers. I discussed it with her doctor, and she said the rash was most likely due to acidic urine & stools. She prescribed a special ointment that has maalox in it, and the rash disappeared immediately. Just a thought...

E.,

I found a great diaper rash cream. I used balmex and desitin all through my first son's infancy, but my second son, born in June 2007 developed a bad rash when he was just a couple weeks old and my old standbys didn't work. I did some research and found 2 creams that were supposed to work on the difficult rashes I went and got some Tripple Paste, it's a little more expensive, but it works and I figure if it's going to work and save my kids the pain of diaper rashes, I'll spend the money. Anotehr kind my cousin swears by is ButtPaste, it's got the same active ingredient and works great too.

You could try that too...but if you have a dr appointment, I'd save the money until you know if it's an infection like the last poster suggested. until then, a good soak in a warm tub usually helps to relieve some pain.

When My daughter had the same symptoms it was a yeast infrection. My doctor said to use Lotramin 2 times a day for 7-10 days.

Hi E.,
By all means, I am no physician, so don't take this as medical advice! But, the same thing happened to my first son, and my doc told me that the bumps indicate a fungal/yeast-type of infection, which I guess is common in babies. Desitin didn't work for me, either. What they told me to use was chlortrimiton (sp?)-it's an antifungal safe for babies' bottoms. You can check with your pharmacist--they'll know what stuff to use. Happy diapering!
