My hubby and I are taking a long weekend away just the two of us for the first time in years and I'm thinking it would be nice to have a good book to read on the airplane. It's been so long since I've actually read a book I don't know what's out there or even where to start looking for a good book! Does anyone have any suggestions? I like the type of novels that are usually on Oprah's book list- just a good book, not too romancy-type, not mysteries or too dark. Any suggestions? Anyone read a book recently that they just loved?? Thanks!

What can I do next?

You have received some great book referrals from Mamasource readers. Another one to consider is the The Glass Castle by Jeanette Walls. It is a true story about a poor family from Virginia, and how one daughter succeeded in life. It is a great read, sad and touching at the same time. It was a quick read and a book I found hard to put down.

Another that was a good read was Inside the Kingdom: My life in Saudi Arabia, a true story by Carmen Bin Ladin. Osama's ex sister in law. She tells of her time with the Bin Ladin family and how she finally escaped their world.

Happy reading!

Hi J.!
Love books, so here are some suggestions:
1. The Kite Runner
2. Water for Elephants
3. Memory Keeper's Daughter
4. My Sister's Keeper
5. In her shoes, or Goodnight Nobody, or anything by that author (Jennifer Weiner I think?)
6. Something Borrowed or Something Blue or anything by that author (Emily Giffin I think)

I hear 'Eat, Pray, Love' is great. If you are into that kind of that kind of soul-searching genre. One oldie I want to read is', The Piano.' Another sensual story, I am sure the book is wonderful (vs. the movie).

If you're looking for something light-hearted, I recommend "Can You Keep a Secret" by Sophie Kinsella. It's by no means deep - but it keeps you turning the pages...and it had me laughing out loud.

Hi I just read everything by Fannie Flagg WOW. loved them all. A red Bird Christmas, or Standing Under the Rainbow. She is amazing and entertaining. I sure wish she wrote more books, only 6. Just one more left for me to read. I hope I can find another just as good. Also The Secret Life of Bees, I can not remember the author.

Hi, I'm in a Book Club (I'm in Ireland but used to live in Palo Alto) and here are some which we all universally loved:
The Kite Runner by Khaled Hosseini
On Chesil Beach by Ian McEwan
Mister Pip by Lloyd Jones

Enjoy your weekend.
