Bleeding at 10 Weeks

So, I took a trip home yesterday and during my flight I got a heavy bright red blood flow. It soaked my underwear and jeans. I used three pads on the plane to soak up the blood and the bleeding stopped about after 30 mins. later. I took a bath when I arrived at my parents and since then I have not had any bleeding. I went to the ER this morning and my ultrasound showed my 10 week old baby with a heart beat which was very good. I have been taking it as easy as possible but I do have a six month old to tend to. Just now I went to the bathroom and noticed some very light brown discharge. Do you think I could be suffering a miscarriage? I had a miscarriage in March of 2009 and these symptoms are totally different. I have had three US and all have been good with heartbeats. I am just hoping that this brown discharge is nothing and just old blood from my pelvic check. Anyone have any advice to share or perhaps a similar experience? I would really appreciate some insight. THANKS EVERYONE!

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Lucky for me I have had no bleeding for a week now. I have had no problems since and am hoping my baby is fine. I have not had reason to go to the doctors office since my last US. I intend on going to see my OBGYN when I return home after the 21st. I am hoping that it was just a freak pregnancy thing that all will be ok in the end. Thanks everyone for the much needed advice. I have had one miscarriage already and I do not think this is one. Cross your fingers for me!

Please don't freak out!! I know, easier said than done. But I was exactly where you are a few months ago. And I am now almost 7 months pregnant with out ANY complications!

Right around the same time as you (10 weeks) I bled so heavily that I thought for sure I was having a miscarriage. My husband and I mourned the entire weekend. On Monday when we finally got into my OBs office, there was the little heart beat w/o any signs of anything being wrong. I went on to bleed for over a month...no lie. I bled every single day for over a month - red and brown. I can't even tell you how many u/s I had, no one could ever find a "reason". Once I hit my second trimester it just stopped one day. And I have been fine ever since.

I hope you have the same outcome as me!! The fact that you already saw the heartbeat and you are 10 weeks is a VERY good sign that this is just one of those whacky pregnancy things w/o any explanation.

A heartbeat is a great sign! Your baby is fine right now, and will probably stay that way. This website is full of encouragement and stories that will warm your heart and comfort you during this scary time.

I started bleeding at 10 weeks as well and was devasted as I thought I was having a miscarriage. I scheduled an appointment for an ultrasound for the next day and the doctor said that baby was fine and that the bleeding was due to a small placental hemmorhage. I am now 28 weeks along and have not had any other issues with this pregnancy.
It sounds like you experienced something similar- the brown discharge is old blood, which is residual from the bleeding you experienced. It sounds like you are okay- baby has a good heartbeat, thank goodness! If it is a placental issue, taking vitamin e with selenium can help resolve placental issues (per The Natural Pregnancy Book by Aviva Jill Romm). It is also a good reason to rest and take it easy for a week or two!
I hope that you are able to rest and find peace about your baby being okay- any bleeding during pregnancy is so scary! I hope you have a happy and healthy pregnancy!

It is possible to miscarry one twin but keep the other and carry to term. Maybe this could have happened? I can not tell you for sure obviously but it's something to consider.
I'm assuming they checked your hormone levels and they came back good right?
I would just relaz and take it easy as much as you can.
I wish you luck.

I would ask your OB about a subchorionic (sp?) hemorrhage. I had a previous miscarriage and when I saw blood with my DD, I freaked, thinking it was happening again. Turns out, there was a condition I was experiencing that many people do...as long as the bleeding isn't severe and the baby does ok, the baby should grow larger than the pocket of blood (basically) and do fine. I was told that old blood is brown blood. But I'd talk to my OB specifically.

I had this sort of thing happen with my second child. She is almost 20 now, so it all turned out fine. Interestingly, I also got pregnant with her when my first was 6 months old.

Brown is old blood. It is most likely the remainder of what did not come out before.

I don't want to alarm you or make you feel bad in any way, but get your hormone levels checked. I have had 6 pregnancies and out of those 6 I didn't bleed with 2 of them. (my girls) With all of my boys, I believe now that I had estrogen dominance, which caused a lot of bleeding. I had an abrupted placenta with each one of them. I delivered my first son at 26 weeks. He only lived 9 hours. My next pregnancy was actually twins, I miscarried one at about 15 weeks and carried the other until 22 weeks when he was delivered stillborn. My next son was born at 32 weeks. Healthy and feisty! He is now 22 years old. My next son was born at 25 weeks. He only weighed 1 pound 13 ounces at birth, but now he is almost 17. I know I had hormone issues when I was pregnant. I learned how to eliminate estrogen from my diet, and now I feel wonderful. No PMS or strong emotional issues at all.

Definitely talk to your OB about a subchorionic hemmorhage. I had one that was huge (13 cm long/4 cm wide). The symptoms were very much like a miscarriage (I've had many) and it was soooo traumatic. The only way for it to heal is bedrest. It took 6 weeks for mine to heal and the bleeding to stop. Do a little searching online to see if you think that may be it. It should at least give you relief to know that is what is happening. Good luck!
