Hello moms! I am looking for a Birthday gift idea for my to-be ten-year-old daughter. Her only request was a "craft of some sort that will take weeks to complete". I asked her to elaborate - and she explained she just wants something crafty that can keep her busy at home. I am the least creative person there is - much to her dismay (poor thing!). A gift certificate to a craft supply store would only confuse both of us, as she doesn't really know what she wants, and I, like I said, am not crafty and those stores intimidate me. I am at a loss, and thought I would turn to you guys. A little about her: She is not into "girly" things like make-up/jewelry/beads or scrapbooking. She loves to cook, play outside, swim, do gymnastics, read, get her hands dirty, and "work" - always seeking chores or something to keep her busy. I would love a gift to "wow" her... can you help?

What can I do next?

Have you thought of preserving her memories with her by doing a scrapbook or special photo album? My 11 year old loves the one I started and handed over to her to work on (while I complete a different project). I offer a variety of classes/workshops to learn the basics of scrapbooking - I could even do a birthday party for her and her friends at your house for a minimal fee. Check out my website at www.mycmsite.com/mindynemoff or email me for more info. Not everyone needs to be crafty or creative to put together a beautiful story to share with family and friends. I'm in Blue Ash and have workshop space in my home.

My daughter is 10, so I asked her what she would get for a friend like your daughter. What about paint-by-numbers? Is she into painting? My daughter also likes the "How to Draw.." books (by Lee J. Ames). You could get a few of them and drawing materials. Mosaics are also neat, but can be a lot of work. There are some good books that tell you how to do it. You might want to check one out from the library to see if it catches her interest. There are also a few art kits my daughter has had her eye on. One is spin-art, the other is a pottery wheel. These could potentially keep your daughter busy when she so desires.
Good luck. I hope this helps.

Quilting is always fun and if you can teach her, or find someone to teach her to hand sew the pieces she can make quilts that are not "girly" at all. I know a lot of the patterns are girly, but there are lots of fabrics that aren't. Tie-dying is something my daughter and I like to do. I recommend taking a class online at quiltuniversity.com. They have a great hand dying and shibori (basically tie-dye) class. If she just wants to try it out, Wilson's art carries the procion dyes and there's a great book called color by accident.

Good luck and have fun!

Just some thoughts...
1) I think at Michaels they have a bird feeder kit. You(she) would have to actually build it and then paint it. Then, you can hang it outside for her to enjoy.

2) What about making a cookbook. If you cook with her, maybe you could put in your favorite recipes to cook together, and she can add a new recipe when she finds a good one. You could even just get like a photo album, decorate the outside of it however you want, put the recipes on index cards, and stick them in the sleves where photos would normally go.

3) This isn't really crafty, but what about making her a DVD of her life so far. It's pretty simple to do, I've heard. I know there are websites out there, I've even seen a few posts on here. You would just gather up some pics and you can put it to music. I know it isn't really a crafty thing for her, but it's something I know she will cherish, and she will watch it over and over and over again! If you like this idea, and want more info, I will be happy to research where you can go to make one.

Good luck! K.

You check at Michaels they offer classes for all sorts of crafts including cake decorating. The prices are reasonable and the classes are fun.

Have you thought about finding a ceramic shop amd take here there to paint something she could either keep and use in her room or gift it to you or someone else ho she admires. On John and Kate plus eight she had a girl's day out with them and they did some really beautiful things. I do know that although ceramics have kinda died there sre still some studios around here in the Cincinnati Area. Honestly check at stores like Michael's or Hobby Lobby they also have classes usually on Saturday Mornings. Also I know in the summer and it may be too late to get her in this year the Art museum has a crafting camp during the week to get kids uinterested in the arts. After all so many schools are stoping thouse kinds of programs. Another thought might be would she want to learn sewing? Check with Hancock Fabrics and Joann's they sometimes have ladies who teach beginners. Most of the sewing machine shops have someone who taches but you have to buy a machine and that can be costly. Take her and let her see what ia avaible in your area that she might like to do. Even if it's not for her Christmas is coming up and I don't know how the other ladies feel but something handmade no matter how crudly done always makes me like it better because it came from the heart.
