My son is 5 months old now, and I really need to start working out and losing that pregnancy weight that I have gained. I hate to run, but love biking. I was wondering if any of you moms have used any attachments or carriers on your bike for your infant ( 5 - 6 months old). He can't sit up by himself yet but can sit well when leaning on something. If you have any suggestions please let me know what kind it was and where you got it so that I can research it. Oh and P.s. I am not looking to spend a ton of money on something! Thank you :)
I agree with PP, if you can't put a helmet on him, it doesn't matter what type of seat or trailer you get, he's too young. Once his head is big enough for a helmet (you'll have to spend more money to get an infant helmet if you don't want to wait until he's at least 1) then look at the guidelines for seats. We got one for only $20 at Once Upon A Child, but it does require that the baby can sit unassisted.
Helmets rarely fit for that age (we looked high and low) and if their neck is not too sturdy yet, there's always risks of injuries when he's jostled (especially if you hit a pothole or get on/off the curb). Our pediatrician said not until the helmet fits, which is usually around 1 yo. One thing I did was take long brisk walks with my baby. I also did stretches using baby as weight (lifted him up and down). We both had fun.
Get a sitter to watch him while you go riding. He's too little for a helmet, and thus too young to go riding. You'd be worried about him the whole time, instead of getting a good workout. I would be worried about the bumps and his little head bouncing around.
Biking with the family is fun; just don't rush into it yet. Wait til he's AT LEAST a year old.

If your husband is a creative guy or you are, you might be able to modify a bike trailer. We purchased a bike trailer that also said not for under 1 year. My husband took step by step pictures dismantling the seat, then attached a board in there with a bar attached to it. We were then able to place our daughter's car seat in the bike trailer clipped to the bar. She was very secure and loved the bike rides we took. We were just careful not to go on anything bumpy. The next year we put the trailer back to way it was and now she still loves bike rides.

I really like the bike seats where the child is in front of you. We have the Safe T Seat. It doesn't throw off your balance and you can keep a close eye on your baby.
I wasn't able to find a helmet to fit my 9 month old, but we just ride carefully on smooth pavement.
A bike carrier is a no-no for such a young child. Your child needs to be at least 1 year old before considering this. He should always were a helmet and he will not have the strenghth to do so until he is a year. Ask your ped if you don't believe me.
I have looked for similar, but what I found was that it is not recommended for children to ride in bikes/trailers until at least 1 year old. Helmet's are also made for over 1 year old.
You may want to look into that first before having your baby ride with you. I'd like to do it to, but decided it was best to wait.

When we were looking for the same option, we found that a back pack carrier (like the ones that can go on the front or back of you) work beautifully. We get a few funny looks, but it feels more secure to me than a seat on the back of the bike.
I think he's too young for a bike seat. We have one that attaches over the rear tire, but I think they have be able to sit unassisted. He should also have full control of his head and be able to wear a helmet. He NEEDS a helmet! My dd is two and recently was on a bike ride (in her seat) with the babysitter and they had a wreck. If my dd HADN'T been wearing her helmet, we would have been going to ER. Also, those backpacks are NOT made for bike riding. Many of them say on the packaging that they are NOT made for that use. It just 100% NOT SAFE. If you can't find a sitter for your son while you bike, you may want to consider a stationary bike or walking instead.
